    Notizen: Summary The stolon apices of genets of Trifolium repens were mapped in the field, and the distance moved by each apex eight days after mapping was measured. The spatial distribution of the apices was investigated using the Voronoi polygon construct. The spacing of apices was shown to differ between genets, and to be influenced by the proximity of neighbouring genets. The rate of extension of stolons was positively correlated with polygon area. The differences observed were interpreted in terms of differences in the positions of genets along the “phalanx-guerilla” continuum of growth forms. Mechanisms which may promote the intermingling of genets are discussed.

    Notizen: Summary A physician aged 44 years participated as a volunteer in pharmacokinetic studies with tinidazole (FASIGYN, Pfizer). He received 1600 mg of the drug as an intravenous infusion over 80 min. Shortly afterwards, he fainted and was unconscious for about 10 s. The attack was followed by low blood pressure, nausea and tiredness for several h. The serum concentration of tinidazole was 35.4 mg/l when the attack started. Blood tests showed a normal immunoglobulin E level, and a transient fall in the concentration of complement factor C3 after the infusion. It is concluded that tinidazole caused an acute toxic reaction with subsequent activation of complement factors.

    Notizen: Abstract Analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of a dental gallium alloy have been carried out. This commercial Ga alloy was made by triturating a Ag-Sn-Cu-rich alloy powder with a liquid Ga alloy containing Ga, In and Sn. Ga alloys are of increasing interest as an alternative to amalgam. The dental material studied in the present work was found to be a composite consisting of remaining, undissolved particles from the Ag-based alloy powder in a matrix of reaction products with the liquid Ga alloy. The phases in the matrix and the remaining Ag-based alloy particles have been identified by electron diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. the following phases were identified: orthorhombic Ag3Sn, cubic γ-Cu9Ga4, cubic Ag9In4, tetragonal β-Sn and hexagonal Ag2Ga. In addition to these well-known phases Ga-rich regions of Cu-Ga were observed consisting of an intergrowth of the tetragonal CuGa2 and one of the cubic γ-Cu9Ga4 phases.

    Notizen: Abstract The production of iron silicide layers by the vapour deposition of silicon on to iron has been studied over the temperature range 800 to 1200° C. Silicon was deposited from silicon tetrachloride by either a combination of hydrogen reduction and replacement reaction with the iron substrate or by the replacement reaction alone. In the combined process, at temperatures in the range 800 to 1100° C, the deposition occurs by at least 75% hydrogen reduction. At temperatures above 1100° C the rate of the replacement reaction increases more rapidly than that of the hydrogen reduction process, and so the replacement reaction accounts for more than 25% of the overall depostion. The growth morphologies of the layers have been studied as a function of deposition temperature by scanning electron microscopy. The morphologies obtained in the combined process are shown to agree with general predictions based on the effects of gas phase supersaturation on vapour growth morphologies. The deposits produced by replacement alone are shown to vary from having a vapour-etched crystalline morphology to having a flat porous morphology as the deposition temperature is increased.

    Notizen: Abstract The microstructure of laser-processed (Al1−xNix)3 Ti with Ni content ranging from 5 to 15 at. % has been studied by scanning-and transmission-electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). All samples contain Al-rich dendrites with Ni-rich interdendritic phases. The dendrites in the 5 at. % Ni alloy consist of the Al3Ti phase with the DO22 type structure, whereas the alloys containing 8 to 15 at. % Ni consist of the Al67Ni8Ti25 phase with the L12-type structure. The lattice parameter of the L12 type structure of Al67Ni8Ti25 was determined by comparing the Higher Order Laue Zone (HOLZ) line patterns in experimental and calculated convergent beam electron diffraction disks. The lattice parameter was found to be a = 0.3935 ± 0.0003 nm. Within the L12 type regions of the alloy with 8 at. % Ni, precipitates with a new primitive tetragonal structure was found. The cell dimensions are a = 0.39 nm and c = 1.18 nm. AlNTi2 with Ti: Al ratio equal to 2.0 ± 0.2 was found as needles in interdendritic regions. The cell dimensions are consistent with a = 0.299 nm and c = 1.361 nm and space group P63/mmc.

    Notizen: Abstract An electron microscopic study of the twinning and exsolution textures in one hydrothermal and two pegmatitic amazonites from southern Norway is reported. From observations of three types of interfaces: between twins, between domains twinned on different laws and between Na- and K-feldspar domains, perthitic textures involving low albite lenses up to 10 μm long in a twinned microcline matrix are shown to result from exsolution from the triclinic phase. Complex twinning on albite and pericline laws is suggested to be the result of strains induced by exsolution. Other textures, involving the late introduction of Na at low temperature in a pegmatite and the occurrence of Pb-rich and plagioclase crystallites in a hydrothermal amazonite, are described.

    Notizen: Abstract Elastic energy calculations based upon the coherent model of Willaime and Brown [Acta Cryst. A30, 316–331 (1974)] have been carried out for some exsolution textures in peristerite and Böggild intergrowths. For peristerites it is demonstrated that substitution of K for Na moves the orientation of the exsolution lamellae from (08 $$\overline {\text{1}} $$ ) to about ( $$\overline {\text{1}} $$ , 21, $$\overline {\text{2}} $$ ) in agreement with observations. An electron microscope study of exsolution textures in labradorite and andesine plagioclases has been carried out and information about small structural differences in these lamellar structures has been obtained from elastic energy calculations.
