    Description: Unconventional resources such as shale gas are becoming increasingly important exploration and production targets. To understand the geophysical responses of shale-gas plays, we use a rock physics relationship, which is constrained with geology and formation-evaluation analysis, to calculate effective properties such as impedance and VP/VS. Numerical studies suggest that in-situ rock para-meters such as mineral composition (e.g., clay, quartz, and calcite) and TOC, as well as the interaction among them, can significantly influence the geophysical responses of the organic-rich rocks, thus providing the basis for the geophysical characterization of shale-gas plays.

    Description: Carbonate reservoirs in western China have tremendous potential and are the key area for oil and gas exploration in that country. Compared to conventional carbonate reservoirs, discovering and characterizing this kind of reservoir is much more difficult and presents significant challenges. Solutions to the major geophysical problems began with a detailed analysis of exploration issues for such complex carbonate reservoirs and, subsequently, a set of techniques for complex carbonate reservoir prediction was established. These include highly accurate seismic acquisition, prestack amplitude-preserved processing including prestack depth migration, new rock physics models, prestack elastic inversion, seismic multiattribute optimization and integrated prediction, fracture detection using prestack data with limited azimuthal distribution, and fluid identification based on prestack inversion. Additionally, to solve some special problems, diffraction wavefield separation and imaging algorithms were developed for better imaging of caves. Q-migration and nonstationary deconvolution algorithms were also developed for resolution enhancement. Application of these techniques to field data has proven effective, and drilling results show good agreement with our research. Nevertheless, the field is still in its infancy.

    Description: The ability to identify fracture clusters and corridors and their prevalent direction within many carbonates and unconventional shale gas/tight gas reservoirs may have a significant impact on field development planning as well as on the placement of individual wells. We believe seismic fracture prediction provides the best opportunity to identify the spatial distribution of fracture corridors, but the reliability of seismic fracture detection technology is constantly being questioned. The criticism results from the degree to which the acquisition footprint, random and coherent noise in the seismic data, and near-surface/overburden issues affect extracted seismic "fracture" attributes. Therefore, a key issue is the separation of artifacts caused by the acquisition footprint and near-surface or overburden anisotropy/structural variations from the anomalies caused by the presence of fractures.
