Beschreibung: Data of apparent ice thickness from airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys of fast ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, carried out in Nov/Dec 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2017. Values are given for apparent thicknesses derived from both, in-phase and quadrature signals. The difference between both thicknesses is a scaled measure of sub-ice platelet layer thickness. Data are from east-west transects across McMurdo Sound, at fixed latitudes. Data were smoothed and interpolated onto a regular longitude grid (0.001 degree increments). More information can be found in Haas et al. (2021).

In:  Supplement to: Dickson, Alexander J; Cohen, Anthony S (2012): A molybdenum isotope record of Eocene Thermal Maximum 2: Implications for global ocean redox during the early Eocene. Paleoceanography, 27(3), PA3230, https://doi.org/10.1029/2012PA002346
    Publikationsdatum: 2023-06-27
Beschreibung: During the early Eocene, a series of short-term global warming events ("hyperthermals”) occurred in response to the rapid release of carbon into the oceans and atmosphere. In order to investigate the response of ocean redox to global warming, we have determined the molybdenum isotope compositions (d98/95Mo) of samples spanning one such hyperthermal (Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM-2, 54.1 Ma)), from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302 Site M0004A in the Arctic Ocean. The highest d98/95Mo in our sample set (2.00 ± 0.11 per mil) corresponds to the development of local euxinia at Site M0004A during the peak of ETM-2, which we interpret as recording the global seawater d98/95Mo at that time. The ETM-2 seawater d98/95Mo is indistinguishable from a recent estimate of seawater d98/95Mo from an earlier hyperthermal (Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 55.9 Ma), d98/95Mo = 2.08 ± 0.11 per mil). We argue that the similarity in seawater d98/95Mo during ETM-2 and the PETM was caused by the development of transient euxinia in the Arctic Ocean during each hyperthermal that allowed sediments accumulating in this basin to capture the long-term d98/95Mo of early Eocene seawater. Our new data therefore place a minimum constraint on the magnitude of transient global seafloor deoxygenation during early Eocene hyperthermals.

Beschreibung: Flow cytometry samples for analysis of virus-like particle, prokaryote and small phototrophic eukaryote abundances were collected from sea foam, surface microlayer and 1-m deep water from the Swedish Skagerrak during a 1-month campaign at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory in February 2020. Using a small boat, foam and microlayer were collected using a glass plate sampler, and 1-m deep water using a syringe connected to a hose. In addition, rainwater for flow cytometry was collected close to the coast in Duran bottles. Samples were fixed with glutardialdehyde (1% final concentration, Merck, Sweden), stored for 1 hour in the dark and subsequently stored at -80 °C. The purpose of the cellular and viral abundance assessment was to complement metagenomic analyses to investigate viral dispersal across the air-sea interface and along the natural water cycle. In addition, metadata for light conditions, wind speed, salinity, and temperature were recorded. For further details on the campaign and flow cytometric analysis, please refer to Rahlff et al., 2022.

Beschreibung: Paleobotanical site information, terpenoid, n-alkane, and other and biomarker quantification and carbon isotope data from sediment samples collected from North America Paleogene fossil leaf sites that extend from Colorado to the High Arctic. Sediment samples were collected laterally along fossil leaf-bearing zones. To disentangle the vegetation source of sediment n-alkanes, we measured the carbon isotope (δ13C) values of nonsteroidal triterpenoids (angiosperm biomarkers) and tricyclic diterpenoids (conifer biomarkers) to determine angiosperm and conifer end member δ13C values. Compounds were isolated using column chromatography and identified and quantified with an Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph (GC) interfaced to an Agilent 5975C quadrupole mass selective detector (MSD) and flame ionization detector (FID). Compound-specific carbon isotope analyses were performed, where possible, on n-C27 through n-C35 alkanes, diterpenoids, and triterpenoids by gas chromatograph-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS).

Beschreibung: The thicknesses of sea ice and sub-ice platelet layer were measured at regular intervals on fast ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica in November and December of 2011. Thirty-metre cross-profiles were established at each site, and snow depths were measured at 0.5 m intervals along the transect lines with a metal ruler. A mean snow depth for each site was derived from these 120 measurements. Freeboard, sea ice thickness and sub-ice platelet layer thickness were recorded at five locations at each site - at the central crossing point and at the end points of each transect. The mean of these was then calculated and taken as representative of the site. Ice thicknesses were measured by using a tape measure with a brass T-anchor attached at the zero mark. This was deployed vertically through the drill-hole and allowed to rotate to a horizontal alignment when exiting the bottom of the drill-hole at the ice-ocean interface. From this position the anchor is slowly pulled upwards until some resistance is met and the first measurement is taken. This resistance is taken to mark the sub-ice platelet layer/ocean interface. The tape measure is then pulled harder, forcing the bar to pass through the sub-ice platelet layer until it sits flush against the sea ice/sub-ice platelet layer interface where a second measurement is taken. Measurement sites were about 5 km apart.
