The annual average ranged from 87 to 123 μg m−3, with the highest in Baoding and Shijiazhuang, the moderate in Handan and Hengshui, and the lowest in Cangzhou, which revealed an evident concentration gradient with distance from the mountains. PM2.5 pollution indicated significantly regional characteristics and high correlations in daily PM2.5 changes and similar seasonal and diurnal variations in five cities. The highest concentrations mainly occurred in the winter, then autumn, spring, and summer, and the diurnal variations were bimodal with peaks during the morning rush hours and at night, which were mostly dominated by the differences in source emissions and the boundary layer. The PM2.5 concentrations were significantly positively correlated with relative humidity, especially during winter. The highest PM2.5 concentrations in all cities were associated with the south, southeast, and southwest pathways, while the short northwest pathway in the winter for Baoding and Shijiazhuang experienced the highest concentration. Regional contributions ranged from 19.6 to 33.7% annually, with the largest in Baoding and Shijiazhuang. These results provide a scientific basis for pollution forecasting and control in these heavily polluted cities.

    Description: To maintain the sustainable utilization of water resources and reduce soil erosion in the Loess Plateau, the Chinese government has adopted a number of environmental restoration strategies since 1999, including the Grain for Green Project (GFGP) and the Natural Forest Conservation Program; these large projects greatly alter the regional water cycle. Detecting runoff changes and quantitatively assessing the contribution of anthropogenic activities (including land use/cover change (LUCC) and water diversion) and climate change (including potential evaporation and precipitation) are imperative for implementing sustainable management strategies. Using observed records from 15 hydrological stations and 85 national meteorological stations from 1980 to 2013, the decomposition method, based on the Budyko hypothesis, is used to quantify the impact of climate variation and anthropogenic interference on annual runoff for the 12 catchments in the Loess Plateau. The results show the following: (1) the observed annual runoff exhibited a negative trend in all 12 catchments (significant in eight catchments) with a range of −1.94 to −0.16 mm·year−1 and exhibited a substantial difference before and after 1999; (2) the sensitivity of runoff to vegetation change, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration increased in most catchments after 1999, indicating that great challenges and uncertainties might be introduced to regional water resource availability; and (3) the anthropogenic interference, particularly LUCC caused by forest strategies, has become the main contribution to runoff change. We suggest that more attention should be given to water resource availability and that the hydrologic consequences of revegetation should be taken into account in future management.

The concept of near-nadir interferometric measurements was implemented in the experimental Interferometric Imaging Radar Altimeters (InIRA) mounted on Chinese Tian Gong 2 (TG-2) space laboratory. This study is focused on mapping the extent of high mountain lakes in the remote Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) areas using the InIRA observations. Theoretical simulations were first conducted to understand the scattering mechanisms under near-nadir observation geometry. It was found that water and surrounding land pixels are generally distinguishable depending on the degree of their difference in dielectric properties and surface roughness. The observed radar backscatter is also greatly influenced by incidence angles. A dynamic threshold method was then developed to detect water pixels based on the theoretical analysis and ancillary data. As assessed by the LandSat results, the overall classification accuracy is higher than 90%, though the classifications are affected by low backscatter possibly from very smooth water surface. The algorithms developed from this study can be extended to all InIRA land measurements and provide support for the similar space missions in the future.
