    Description: A robust particle filter (PF) and its application to fault/defect detection of nonlinear system are investigated in this paper. First, an adaptive parametric model is exploited as the observation model for a nonlinear system. Second, by incorporating the parametric model, particle filter is employed to estimate more accurate hidden states for the nonlinear stochastic system. Third, by formulating the problem of defect detection within the hypothesis testing framework, the statistical properties of the proposed testing are established. Finally, experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed detector on real defect detection and localization in images.

    Description: DNA strand displacement technique is widely used in DNA programming, DNA biosensors, and gene analysis. In DNA strand displacement, leaky reactions can cause DNA signals decay and detecting DNA signals fails. The mostly used method to avoid leakage is cleaning up after upstream leaky reactions, and it remains a challenge to develop reliable DNA strand displacement technique with low leakage. In this work, we address the challenge by experimentally evaluating the basic factors, including reaction time, ratio of reactants, and ion concentration to the leakage in DNA strand displacement. Specifically, fluorescent probes and a hairpin structure reporting DNA strand are designed to detect the output of DNA strand displacement, and thus can evaluate the leakage of DNA strand displacement reactions with different reaction time, ratios of reactants, and ion concentrations. From the obtained data, mathematical models for evaluating leakage are achieved by curve derivation. As a result, it is obtained that long time incubation, high concentration of fuel strand, and inappropriate amount of ion concentration can weaken leaky reactions. This contributes to a method to set proper reaction conditions to reduce leakage in DNA strand displacement.

    Description: The grain microstructure of molten pool during the solidification of TC4 titanium alloy in the single point laser cladding was investigated based on the CAFE model which is the cellular automaton (CA) coupled with the finite element (FE) method. The correct temperature field is the prerequisite for simulating the grain microstructure during the solidification of the molten pool. The model solves the energy equation by the FE method to simulate the temperature distribution in the molten pool of the single point laser cladding. Based on the temperature field, the solidification microstructure of the molten pool is also simulated with the CAFE method. The results show that the maximum temperature in the molten pool increases with the laser power and the scanning rate. The laser power has a larger influence on the temperature distribution of the molten pool than the scanning rate. During the solidification of the molten pool, the heat at the bottom of the molten pool transfers faster than that at the top of the molten pool. The grains rapidly grow into the molten pool, and then the columnar crystals are formed. This study has a very important significance for improving the quality of the structure parts manufactured through the laser cladding forming.

    Description: This paper presents an improved genetic algorithm (GA) with gene recombination for bus crew-scheduling problem in bus company. Unlike existing methods that rely on designing a fixed potential shift set by software, our new method does not need such a potential shift set information. In our method, satisfied shifts are generated through gene recombination in genetic algorithm. We conduct extensive studies based on real-life instances from Beijing Bus Group. Compared with results generated by the current manual method, ant colony algorithm, and CPLEX, computational results show that our algorithms demonstrated very good computational performances. In our tests, the number of the maximum reducing shifts can be beyond 30, especially when trip number is very large. The high relative percentage deviation demonstrated the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed.

    Description: To achieve the characteristics of the cash cycle module of a financial machine, such as a compact transmission mechanism, high transmission accuracy, large torque, high rotation speed, high service temperature, no lubrication, and long service life, this work presented a solution to optimize the tooth shape of a thermoplastic gear and the design of a thermoplastic gear with a limit pressure angle of 35°. Through the modeling and simulation analysis of the factors affecting the life of the gear, it was found that the gear with the improved tooth profile was superior to the control gear without the improved tooth profile in terms of sliding wear of the tooth surface, thermal deformation wear, and interference wear. The experimental results demonstrated that the wear resistance of a thermoplastic gear with a tooth profile of 35° was 1.1 times higher than that of the gear with a tooth profile of 20°, which was consistent with the simulation analysis results and can be used as a theoretical basis for thermoplastic gear design in related fields.

    Description: For the well planning stage, the application of the designed borehole trajectory (DBT) predicts that the torque and drag is low, and it is impossible to accurately analyze the difficulty and risk of drilling construction. This paper proposes a method for comparing and selecting borehole trajectory control parameters based on the vector cosine similarity. The database for borehole trajectories has been established, and two vectors were designed to represent the control state of the actual borehole trajectory (ABT) and the simulation position of the simulated borehole trajectory (SBT), respectively, and the similarities of them were used as the reference standard for simulating the behavior of engineers to determine the control parameters. Random selection of control parameters was set to further simulate the behavior of the engineer. The feasibility of the method was evaluated by using the control deviation and torque and prediction deviation. The case well experiment results show that the control deviations of the SBT and the ABT relative to the DBT are close, and the fluctuation law is similar. In rotary drilling conditions, the torque calculated using SBT is slightly higher than the actual drilling torque, and the maximum deviation is less than 10%. In tripping out condition, the hook loads are slightly higher, and the maximum deviation is less than 9%. In additional operating conditions, the hook loads calculated by the SBT are the same as the actual hook loads, and the maximum deviation is less than 4%. This work provides a feasible method to simulate ABT in the well planning stage and enhances the reliability of the predicted torque and drag results.

    Description: In this paper, a novel parameter recognition method of mode-converted wave in single-source ultrasound is put forward and applied to the estimation of axial stresses in bolts. To overcome the distortion and aliasing of the mode-converted wave in single-source ultrasonic signal, a time-frequency parameter recognition method based on the Gabor transform is introduced to recognize the accurate time of flight (TOF) of the mode-converted wave. Based on the mode conversion of the single-source longitudinal ultrasound, a new nonlinear evaluation model based on acoustoelastic equation is derived to determine the axial stress of bolt. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing it with the commonly used TOF ratio method of longitudinal wave and shear wave (L-S). The experiment result shows that the proposed method is more effective in detecting the connection status of bolted joints than the traditional L-S method.

    Description: China launched a series of ecological restoration policies to mitigate its severe environmental challenges in the late 1990s. From the beginning, the effects and influences of the ecological restoration policies have been hotly debated. In the present study, we assessed the effects of two vital ecological restoration policies (Grain-for-Green and Grain-for-Blue) on valued ecosystem services in Shandong province. A new method based on the net primary productivity and soil erosion was developed to assess the ecosystem service value. In the areas implementing the Grain-for-Green and Grain-for-Blue policies, the ecosystem service value increased by 24.01% and 43.10% during 2000–2008, respectively. However, comparing to the average increase of ecosystem service value (46.00%) in the whole of Shandong province in the same period, Grain-for-Green and Grain-for-Blue did not significantly improve overall ecosystem services. The ecological restoration policy led to significant tradeoffs in ecosystem services. Grain-for-Green improved the ecosystem service function of nutrient cycling, organic material provision, and regulation of gases but decreased that of water conservation. Grain-for-Blue increased the water conservation function but led to a reduction in the function of soil conservation and nutrient cycling.
