    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract Sedimentological analyses concerning ice rafted debris, grain size distribution, biogenous components, and clay mineral composition of four sediment cores from the Antarctic continental margin off Kapp Norvegia reveal a cyclical pattern of three different sediment facies. These are classified into warm and cold types representing warm and cold a climatic periods and short transition period from cold to warm events. The sedimentological parameters reflect the variations within the cryosphere and the hydrosphere, which are directly influenced by the climatic fluctuations. The unusually high content of carbonaceous planktonic and benthonic foraminifera in these polar sediments, as well as the interfingering of terrigeneous and biogeneous-rich sediments with increasing distance from the continent, might reflect the influence of the Weddell Sea Polynya and the oscillations of polynya, pack ice and ice shelf extent during the late Pleistocene.
    Kurzfassung: Résumé Des analyses sédimentologiques ont été effectuées sur 4 carottes prélevées le long d'un profil dans les sédiments de la marge continentale antarctique au large du cap Norvegia. Elles ont porté sur les débris amenés par les glaces, la granulométrie, les composants biogéniques et la composition des constituants argileux. Ces analyses révélent une succession cyclique de 3 facies sédimentaires; ceux-ci correspondent à des périodes climatiques chaudes et froides, ainsi qu'à de courtes périodes de transition du froid vers le chaud. Les paramètres sédimentologiques reflètent des variations de l'hydrosphère et de la cryosphère, directement influencées par les fluctuations climatiques. La teneur anormalement élevée de ces sédiments polaires en foraminif ères carbonatés planctoniques et benthoniques, ainsi que l'indentation de sédiments terrigènes et de sédiments riches en éléments biogéniques, peuvent traduire l'influence de la polyme de la Mer de Weddell, ainsi que les oscillations des surfaces occupées par la polynie, le pack et l'iceshelf, au cours du Pleistocène tardif.
    Notizen: Zusammenfassung An vier Sedimentkernen eines Profils am antarktischen Kontinentalhang vor Kapp Norvegia wurden Eisfracht, biogene Komponenten, Korngrößenverteilungen und Tonmineralvergesellschaftungen bestimmt. Die Verteilung der sedimentologischen Parameter zeigt eine zyklische Abfolge von drei verschiedenen Sedimentfazies, die die klimatisch gesteuerten Veränderungen innerhalb der Hydrossphäre und der Kryossphäre widerspiegeln. Die drei Sedimentfazies werden warmen und kalten Klimaperioden sowie einer kurzen Übergangszeit zugeordnet. Der für polare Sedimente ungewöhnlich hohe Gehalt an kalkigen benthonischen und planktonischen Foraminiferen sowie die Verzahnung vorwiegend terrigener mit biogenreichen Sedimenten bei zunehmender Entfernung vom Kontinent lassen den Einfluß der Weddell See-Polynya und die Oszillationen von Schelfeiskante und Packeisbildung während des späten Pleistozäns erkennen.

    Beschreibung: Measuring temperature and salinity profiles in the world's oceans is crucial to understanding ocean dynamics and its influence on the heat budget, the water cycle, the marine environment and on our climate. Since 1983 the German research vessel and icebreaker Polarstern has been the platform of numerous CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth instrument) deployments in the Arctic and the Antarctic. We report on a unique data collection spanning 33 years of polar CTD data. In total 131 data sets (1 data set per cruise leg) containing data from 10 063 CTD casts are now freely available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.860066. During this long period five CTD types with different characteristics and accuracies have been used. Therefore the instruments and processing procedures (sensor calibration, data validation, etc.) are described in detail. This compilation is special not only with regard to the quantity but also the quality of the data – the latter indicated for each data set using defined quality codes. The complete data collection includes a number of repeated sections for which the quality code can be used to investigate and evaluate long-term changes. Beginning with 2010, the salinity measurements presented here are of the highest quality possible in this field owing to the introduction of the OPTIMARE Precision Salinometer.

    Beschreibung: The research vessel and supply icebreaker POLARSTERN is the flagship of the Alfred-Wegener- Institut in Bremerhaven (Germany) and one of the infrastructural pillars of German Antarctic research. Since its commissioning in 1982, POLARSTERN has conducted 30 campaigns to Antarctica (157 legs, mostly austral summer), and 29 to the Arctic (94 legs, northern summer). Usually, POLARSTERN is more than 300 days per year in operation and crosses the Atlantic Ocean in a meridional section twice a year. The first radiosonde on POLARSTERN was released on the 29 December 1982, 2 days after POLARSTERN started on its maiden voyage to the Antarctic. And these daily soundings have continued up to the present. Due to the fact that POLARSTERN has reliably and regularly been providing upper air observations from data sparse regions (oceans and polar regions), the radiosonde data are of special value for researchers and weather forecast services alike. In the course of 30 years (29 December 1982 to 25 November 2012) a total of 12 378 radiosonde balloons were started on POLARSTERN. All radiosonde data can now be found at König-Langlo (2015, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.810000). Each data set contains the directly measured parameters air temperature, relative humidity and air pressure, and the derived altitude, wind direction and wind speed. 432 data sets additionally contain ozone measurements. Although more sophisticated techniques (meteorological satellites, aircraft observation, remote-sensing sys- tems, etc.) have nowadays become increasingly important, the high vertical resolution and quality of radiosonde data remains paramount for weather forecasts and modelling approaches.

    Beschreibung: The GIK-Archive of radiographs is a collection of X-ray negative and photographic images of sediment cores based on exposures taken since the early 1960s. During four decades of marine geological work at the University of Kiel, Germany, several thousand hours of sampling, careful preparation and X-raying were spent on producing a unique archive of sediment radiographs from several parts of the World Ocean. The archive consists of more than 18 500 exposures on chemical film that were digitized, geo-referenced, supplemented with metadata and archived in the data library PANGAEA®. With this publication, the images have become available open-access for use by the scientific community at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.854841.

    Beschreibung: Recent advances in underwater imaging technology allow for the gathering of invaluable scientific information on seafloor ecosystems, such as direct in situ views of seabed habitats and quantitative data on the composition, diversity, abundance, and distribution of epibenthic fauna. The imaging approach has been extensively used within the research project DynAMo (Dynamics of Antarctic Marine Shelf Ecosystems) at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven (AWI), which aimed to comparatively assess the pace and quality of the dynamics of Southern Ocean benthos. Within this framework, epibenthic spatial distribution patterns have been comparatively investigated in two regions in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean: the shelf areas off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, representing a region with above-average warming of surface waters and sea-ice reduction, and the shelves of the eastern Weddell Sea as an example of a stable high-Antarctic marine environment that is not (yet) affected by climate change. The AWI Ocean Floor Observation System (OFOS) was used to collect seabed imagery during two cruises of the German research vessel Polarstern, ANT-XXIX/3 (PS81) to the Antarctic Peninsula from January to March 2013 and ANT-XXXI/2 (PS96) to the Weddell Sea from December 2015 to February 2016. Here, we report on the image and data collections gathered during these cruises. During PS81, OFOS was successfully deployed at a total of 31 stations at water depths between 29 and 784 m. At most stations, series of 500 to 530 pictures ( 〉  15 000 in total, each depicting a seabed area of approximately 3.45 m2 or 2.3  ×  1.5 m) were taken along transects approximately 3.7 km in length. During PS96, OFOS was used at a total of 13 stations at water depths between 200 and 754 m, yielding series of 110 to 293 photos (2670 in total) along transects 0.9 to 2.6 km in length. All seabed images taken during the two cruises, including metadata, are available from the data publisher PANGAEA via the two persistent identifiers at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.872719 (for PS81) and https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.862097 (for PS96).
