Notes: American ginseng roots were treated with an antimicrobial agent, and stored under various CA (2,5, and 8% CO2) or MA conditions to extend the shelf-life. Changes in respiration rates during CA storage, gas composition in packages, saponin and free sugar content, and other quality factors were monitored during storage. The respiration rate of ginseng increased rapidly during the first month of high CO2 CA storage and then slowly decreased to stable levels after 3 mo storage. In MA studies, the equilibrium CO2 concentration was attained after 20 days. There were no noticeable changes in appearance, saponin content and free sugars after 3 mo CA (5% CO2) storage and MA packages.

Notes: Although many Viola species are grown as ornamentals, no information on molecular markers is available for the classification and breeding of Viola. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to identify series-specific molecular markers from the series Pinnatae, Chinensis, and Variegatae of Viola species in the subsection Patellares. We report eight RAPD markers which can be used to distinguish three different series of Viola species based on morphological characters. The eight RAPD markers we identified could be useful to classify Viola species and to assist the hybrid breeding of new varieties.

Notes: Water zoning is not new in arid areas. Many States have laws limiting pumping. However, most of the existing ordinances do not achieve their stated purpose. Many enforce conservation of scarce resources for benefit of future users. Some purport to ensure a continuous water supply to the rights holders. Existing ordinances that limit pumping to the so-called safe yield do not take costs or recoverable benefits into consideration, and the period of use is not stipulated. Therefore, where pumping is regulated under such ordinances, the basins cannot be managed to obtain maximum benefits to present users of the available supply. Two types of ordinances are discussed: general-purpose and management-plan ordinances, which are designed to make possible the achievement of specific objectives. Examples are given of how the latter can be designed to: limit stream depletion and protect existing rights; disperse pumping to increase economic return; force conjunctive use of all land, mineral, and water resources; and establish production quotas to insure optimum economic return to all users during a predetermined period.

Notes: In this paper a simple macro-model of an open economy is presented in order to investigate the relationship between the trade balance and the interest rate. It is shown that under certain conditions the model generates a lag relationship between the two variables. This is consistent with the relationship which JÜrg Niehans found to exist between the Swiss trade balance and its interest rate. With interest-rate sensitive capital movements introduced into the model, fluctuations in the balance of payments can be greater or less than fluctuations in the balance of trade. It is interesting to note that in the case where an internal balance is maintained with a monetary policy fluctuations in the balance of payments are greater than in the case where an internal balance is maintained with a fiscal policy. This conclusion is consistent with Mundell's prescription for an optimal mix of monetary and fiscal policy.

Notes: Peptide chain termination occurs when a stop codon is decoded by a release factor. In Escherichia coli two codon-specific release factors (RF1 and RF2) direct the termination of protein synthesis, while in eukaryotes a single factor is required. The E. coli factors have been purified and their genes isolated. A combination of protein and DNA sequence data reveal that the RFs are structurally similar and that RF2 is encoded in two reading frames. Frame-shifting from one reading frame to the next occurs at a rate of 50%, is regulated by the RF2-specific stop codon UGA, and involves the direct interaction of the RF2 mRNA with the 3’end of the 16S rRNA. The RF genes are located in two separate operons, with the RF1 gene located at 26.7 min and the RF2 gene at 62.3 min on the chromosome map. Ribosomal binding studies place the RF-binding region at the interface between the ribosomal subunits. A possible mechanism of stop-codon recognition is reviewed.

Notes: The physicochemical properties of nonfish proteins were correlated with textural properties of nonfish protein gels and nonfish protein-incorporated surimi gels. Both cold and thermal hydration ability (by centrifugation) of nonfish proteins strongly correlated with compressive force (cohesiveness) of nonfish protein-incorporated surimi gel (r = 0.94 for cold; r = 0.95 for thermal). Hydrophobic amino acid groups in nonfish protein inversely correlated with compressive force (r =−0.88) and penetration force (r =−0.78) of nonfish protein-incorporated surimi gel. Thermal behavior of nonfish protein affected the gel characteristics of nonfish protein and surimi with nonfish protein-incorporated.

Notes: Fresh green peas were blanched for various times/temperatures and stored at — 23°C. At 3 month intervals peas were analyzed for per-oxidase, polyphenoloxidase, lipoxygenase and catalase activity and ascorbic acid content. Samples were cooked and evaluated sensorily, and using Hunter color and Instron texture measurements. Enzymes exhibited varying degrees of activity over the first 3 months in storage. After 3 months, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activity decreased or remained constant. Lipoxygenase activity increased over storage, most noticeably in the long time/low temperature blanch treatment. Sensory evaluation indicated a gradual loss of quality due to poor flavor in the long time/low temperature blanch. Ascorbic acid content, greenness and firmness decreased gradually with storage.
