    Notes: Foggage grazing trials with beef-store cattle and in-calf dairy heifers during four successive winters in Aberdeenshire are described. Many of the animals received only very small quantities of supplementary fodders, but their performance was satisfactory in all cases. During the last two winters, silage and oat straw contributed 40–50% of total food dry-matter intake. It is suggested that this level of supplementary feeding would be satisfactory in practice.In a comparison of store-feeding systems, four in-wintered (housed) steers were 110 1b. per head heavier than their out-wintered monozygous twins at the end of the winter-feeding period. Live-weight differences averaged 27 1b. per head one month later and were negligible at the end of summer. From the results of a metabolism trial it was concluded that the spring weight-loss suffered by the housed cattle was due mainly to a reduction in the weight of gut contents.

    Notes: Abstract Unlike wheat chloroplasts, wheat protoplasts showed a pronounced restoration of the induction phase after a short period of darkness. This difference was used to investigate the relative roles of light-induced reductive activation of enzymes and the auto-catalytic increase in the level of substrates in the control of the rate of photosynthesis during induction. Light activation and dark inactivation of ribulose 5-phosphate kinase, fructose 1,6-biphosphatase and NADP+-specific glyceraldehydephosphate dehydrogenase were measured. In this respect there was no appreciable difference between protoplasts and chloroplasts. In contrast, the level of photosynthetic intermediates remained constant in darkened isolated chloroplasts, but declined rapidly in chloroplasts isolated from darkened protoplasts. When fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase was pre-activated by treating protoplasts with dithiothreitol the lag was only slightly shortened. These results are discussed in terms of control of the rate of the photosynthesis during the lag by substrates rather than limitation imposed by activity of any of the enzymes measured.

    Notes: The chemical mutagen ethylmethanesulphonate (EMS) has been used to generate mutants of Erwinia carotovora subspecies carotovora which are defective in the secretion of pectinases (Pel) and cellulases (Cel) but unaltered for protease (Prt) secretion. Such mutants, called Out− still synthesize Pel and Cel but these enzymes accumulate within the periplasm. Cosmid clones carrying wild-type E. carotovra ssp. carotovora DNA, identified by their ability to restore the Out+ phenotype when transferred to some Out− mutants, were classified into six complementation groups using cosmids and cosmid derivatives. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of a 12.7 kb DNA fragment, encompassing complementing cosmid inserts, revealed a coding capacity for 13 potential open reading frames (ORFs), and these were designated outC-outO. Some of the out gene products were visualized using a T7 gene 10 expression system. The predicted Out proteins are highly similar to components of extracellular enzyme secretion systems from a diverse range of eubacteria including Erwinia chrysanthemi, Klebsiella oxytoca, Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Xanthomonas campestris. Lower levels of similarity exist between Ecc Out proteins and components of macromolecular trafficking systems from Bacillus subtilis, Haemophilus influenzae, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Yersinia pestis and a protein involved in the morphogenesis of filamentous bacteriophages such as M13.

    Notes: The influence on muscle pH of low voltage (〈120v) electrical stimulation applied to beef carcasses shortly after slaughter was studied in two experiments. In the first, sides of beef were stimulated for different times with voltages ranging from 20–110v direct current, whilst in the second stimulation was with 21v direct current for 4 min. The effect of electrical stimulation was to induce a significantly lower muscle pH at 1, 4 and 24 hr when comparisons were made with unstimulated carcasses or sides.

    Notes: During the last eighty years, Essex and Suffolk Water has had to resort to various innovative water-storage and river-transfer schemes to satisfy increasing demands for water in the driest part of the UK. Recently, a series of droughts has emphasised the need for more water. To help meet this need, the company intends to recycle 35 MI/d of Chelmsford treated wastewater, using an £8 million plant to reduce pollutants. In April 2000, the company was granted discharge and abstraction licences by the Environment Agency for the recycling scheme. This paper includes (a) some of the results from several years of pre-impact baseline data, (b) an outline of pilot trials of the recycling processes, and (c) a brief description of the public consultation which was necessary to promote the scheme.

    Notes: During the 1995–97 drought, serious difficulties were experienced by Essex and Suffolk Water in obtaining sufficient water to meet demand. As an emergency measure, a consent to discharge up to 30 Ml/d of ultraviolet disinfected treated wastewater into a raw-water reservoir was obtained from the Environment Agency. Performance of the ultraviolet plant and results of monitoring are reported, reporting procedures are outlined, and the reaction of media and water consumers are described.
