    Notes: Aggressive growth by legumes may restrict the diversity of species-rich meadows recreated on sites restored after mineral extraction. We investigated the ability of mineral nitrogen (N) applications and spring grazing to control the legume component of such meadows. The use of N suppressed Trifolium repens but had no effect on other legume species or on the species richness, diversity, or equitability of the meadow community. Spring grazing significantly reduced the yield from the legume component of the meadow. This was accompanied by an increase in the equitability index of the community, suggesting that the aggressive nature of the legumes had been checked. Spring grazing may therefore provide a means of controlling aggressive legume growth and may maintain the diversity of species-rich meadows established on restored sites.

    Notes: The construct meaning of assessment center evaluations is an important unresolved issue in I/O psychology. This study hypothesized that Cognitive Ability and personality traits are primary correlates of evaluators’ overall assessment ratings (OARs). Meta–analysis results based on 65 correlations indicate the following mean construct–level correlations with OARs: .67 for Cognitive Ability, .50 for Extraversion, .35 for Emotional Stability, .25 for Openness, and .17 for Agreeableness; yielding a multiple R of .84. These findings support our hypothesis and cast light on the construct meaning of assessment center evaluations.

    Notes: Flounders Pleuronectes flesus with an implanted vascular catheter were exposed to a 50% dilution of the water soluble fraction (WSF) of Omani crude oil (c. 6ppm total aromatic hydrocarbons) and serial blood samples taken to determine their endocrine status (cortisol, catecholamines and thyroid hormones) and the resultant and/or causal physiological (haematological, ionoregulatory and respiratory) disturbances. This resulted in a progressive increase in plasma cortisol concentrations from 3 h onwards (rising from 18 to 51 ng ml−1 after 48-h exposure), and increased plasma glucose concentrations indicating a generalized stress response. Plasma T3 and T4 concentrations of both control and WSF-exposed groups declined progressively over the experimental period; exposure to the WSF of crude oil further depressed plasma T4 concentrations but not plasma T3 concentrations relative to those of control fish. Plasma osmolality and sodium and chloride concentrations were stable in WSF-exposed fish, however, plasma potassium concentrations were increased significantly at the 24-and 48-h sampling points. The most profound physiological disturbance in WSF-exposed fish was a dramatic decline in blood oxygen content (CvO2) (from 2–8 to 0–8 ml 100 ml−1 after 48-h exposure), which is likely to be the cause of the increased plasma noradrenaline concentrations from 3 h onwards. Increased noradrenaline is likely in turn to have been responsible for the significant increase in blood haematocrit and blood haemoglobin at the 3-h sampling point, although the dominant effect in the longer-term was a significant decline in both of these haematological parameters.

    Notes: Abstract Cytoplasmic concentrations, fluxes of K+, Na+ and Cl and microsomal membrane lipids were investigated in a salt-sensitive and salt-resistant variety of Zea mays. The salt resistance of Protador relative to LGH (salt-sensitive) appears to be related to higher K+ fluxes and cytoplasmic concentrations, and lower Na+ and Cl fluxes and cytoplasmic concentrations, when grown in NaCl. There were no apparent differences in the simple chemical composition of root microsomal membrane lipids between the two varicties, neither were these affected by salt.

    Notes: Type I restriction enzymes comprise three subunits only one of which, the S polypeptide, dictates the specificity of the DNA sequence recognized. Recombination between two different hsdS genes, SP and SB, led to the isolation of a system, SQ, which had a different specificity from that of either parent. The finding that the nucleotide sequence recognized by SQ is a hybrid containing components from both the SP and SB target sequences suggested that DNA recognition is carried out by two separable domains within each specificity polypeptide. To test this we have made the recombinant gene of reciprocal structure and demonstrate that it encodes a polypeptide whose recognition sequence, deduced In vivo, is as predicted by this model. We also report the sequence of the SB specificity gene, so that information is now available for the five known members of this family of enzymes. Ali show a similar organization of conserved and variable regions. Comparisons of the predicted amino acid sequences reveal large non-conserved areas which may not even be structurally similar. This is remarkable since these different S subunits are functionally identical, except for the specificity with respect to the DNA sequence with which they interact. We discuss the correlation of the variation in polypeptide sequence with recognition specificities.

    Notes: Three sweet corn (Zea mays L) genotypes, one cultivar each, were tested for sugar and soluble solids changes at 6°C for 5 days. Genotypes and cultivars were sugary (su), ‘Silver Queen’; sugary enhanced (se), ‘Incredible’ and super sweet (sh 2), ‘How Sweet It Is.’ Fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, total sugars and °Brix were measured. Sucrose predominated. Generally, °Brix, fructose, glucose and sucrose decreased and maltose increased, sh 2 had lowest °Brix and highest sucrose and total sugars, and su had highest °Brix and lowest sucrose and total sugars, su consisted of 3.8% total sugars (DWB); se, 7.2% and sh 2, 10.9%. Overall correlation coefficient between °Brix and total sugars was −0.99.

    Notes: A “vegetable leather,” possessing a supple, leathery texture, was prepared with sweet potato (SP) and other ingredients. Samples were analyzed at 0, 30, and 60 days storage. Texture, but not flavor or acceptance, was affected by experimental factors. Ingredients had only minor effects on composition. Mean values were: moisture, 5.9%; crude protein, 5.8%; crude fat, 4.9%; ash, 2.7%; crude fiber, 2.2%; and nitrogen-free extract, 84.8%. Dietary fiber was 4.1%. Color of the leather was orange; pH was 4.8; annd caloric content was 17.3 kJ per g. Water activity ranged from 0.48 for leather with SP and apple to 0.58 for leather with SP and without apple. Microbiological counts of samples were low.

    Notes: Walleye pollock were held in ice, slush-ice, refrigerated seawater (RSW) and CO2-modified RSW (MRSW) for up to 8 days, filleted and stored as blocks of fillets at -18°C. Good quality fillets were obtained from pollock held for 4 days in all systems. Uptake of salt presented a problem for pollock held more than 4 days in RSW at 1°C. Flavor scores remained essentially unchanged during frozen storage but nearly all samples became slightly tougher and slightly drier at 6 months. Freshness at time of freezing did not affect frozen storage characteristics. Protein functionality was generally adversely affected when fish were held in RSW or MRSW.
