Notes: Summary Multiple faceted gallstones with an internal fissure have been examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In vivo. the fissures probably contain only water vapor. The fissure may be produced by dehydration or water trapping during the stone formation process.

Notes: Summary The collective volume of Leydig cells in prenatally pinealectomized newborn rats declined as sharply as in intact newborn rats. Also, the collective volume in pups born in the dark declined in a fashion similar to that in pups born in the light. The results indicate that neither the pineal gland nor the light is responsible for the neonatal shrinkage of Leydig cells.

Notes: Summary The hypotensive effect of acute and long-term, intravenous and oral administration of the calcium antagonist, diltiazem, was investigated in 8 normotensive volunteers and 55 patients with essential hypertension. Diltiazem i.v. infusion of 45 mg/h (0.5 mg/min, then 1.0 mg/min, each for 30 min rapidly decreased both blood pressure (BP) from 164±22/98±8 to 144±15/86±9 mmHg (mean±SD) and total peripheral resistance from 32.6±8.4 to 25.3±5.4 mmHg/l/min (p〈0.001), and increased stroke volume from 58.2±9.5 to 64.2±8.6 ml/beat (p〈0.05). It altered neither heart rate nor cardiac output in the hypertensives (n=10). Oral diltiazem 60 mg rapidly decreased BP from 155±10/103±6 to 142±12/90±8 mmHg after 3 hours (p〈0.01/p〈0.001) in hypertensives (n=8), but not in normotensives (n=8). Diltiazem 90 mg p.o. decreased BP from 157±15/102±9 to 129±13/83±8 mmHg (p〈0.01) in hypertensives (n=15), and reduced the heart rate from 71±8 to 65±8 beats/min (p〈0.01). The drug did not change plasma renin activity either in normotensives or hypertensives. The fall in diastolic BP was correlated with the plasma diltiazem concentration (r=0.910, n=6, p〈0.05). Long-term treatment with diltiazem 30mg t.d.s. decreased BP from 163±12/104±8 to 145±9/88±9 mmHg (p〈0.001, n=13), and 60mg t.d.s. decreased BP from 169±15/102±6 to 148±13/87±8 mmHg (p〈0.001, n=8), and significantly reduced the heart rate (p〈0.01) in hypertensives. Thus, the hypotensive action of diltiazem, which is due to arterial dilatation, is effective, either on intravenous or oral administration, during acute and long-term treatment of essential hypertension.

Notes: Summary The acute and long-term hypotensive effects of low doses of nifedipine, and the correlation between the fall in the blood pressure (BP) and the plasma nifedipine concentration, were investigated in patients with essential hypertension. The oral administration of nifedipine 5 mg rapidly decreased BP from 163±22/101±10 to 127±12/82±9 mmHg (mean±SD; p〈0.001), and increased heart rate from 72±8 to 76±6 beats/min (p〈0.05), plasma renin activity rose from 1.2±0.6 to 1.4±0.8 ng/ml/h (p〈0.05), and plasma nifedipine concentration was 75.6±22.0 ng/ml 30 min after administration (n=7). The nifedipine concentration was significantly correlated both with the fall in BP (r=0.410, p〈0.02, n=31) and the rise in the heart rate (r=0.412, p〈0.02, n=31). Treatment with nifedipine 5 mg t.d.s. alone or in combination either with propranolol 10 mg t.d.s., or thiazide 1 tablet daily, or propranolol and thiazide, controlled BP in 36 patients during the 22 week study period. During the long-term nifedipine therapy, the plasma nifedipine level was significantly correlated with the fall in systolic (r=0.577, p〈0.01, n=20) and diastolic (r=0.595, p〈0.01, n=20) BP. It was concluded that the plasma nifedipine concentration could be correlated with the fall in BP, and that low doses of nifedipine, either as monotherapy or in combination, were effective in the acute and long-term treatment of patients with essential hypertension.

Notes: Abstract Neuronal spike trains are regarded as stochastic point processes. To estimate the order and value of Markov processes of the interspike interval sequences with small number of samples, we have proposed a new measure of simplified statistical dependencyd m. This measure is derived from statistical dependencyd m (T=τ) in the case of Gaussian process, and is obtained by the standard deviation and the matrices of the serial correlation coefficients. Sinced m is a parametric measure, it is calculated from the interval sequence transformed into the aormal distribution. We designate this as normalized simplified statistical dependencyNd m. The order and value of the maintained spike sequences recorded from the mesencephalic reticular formation, red nucleus, optic tract, and lateral geniculate nucleus neurons in cats have been estimated. It is indicated that there is a considerable correspondence between the value ofNd m and that ofd m (T=τ). This suggests thatNd m is useful in practice to estimate the order and value of Markov process with small number of samples.

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the order and the values of Markov properties of the time series of events, we have proposed a statistical measure “dependency”:D m = (H 0 −H m )/H 0 , whereH 0 andH m are Shannon's entropy and them-th order conditional entropy, respectively. It is indicated that $$\tilde D_m = \sum\limits_{v = 1}^m {(\hat D_v - \bar D_v^{sh} } )$$ is a better point estimator ofD m, giving a total value of them-th order Markov process. Here $$\hat D_m $$ and $$\bar D_m^{sh} $$ are the estimate ofD m and the arithmetic mean of $$\hat D_m^{sh} $$ when them-th order shuffling is made many times for a given observed series, respectively. The value $$\hat D_m - \bar D_m^{sh} = d_m $$ represents Markov value of the orderm. Under the assumption that the series has continuous variables and the normal distribution, simplified dependency is defined by , where |S m | is the determinant of serial correlation coefficients. It is shown that is practically useful for the estimation of the order and the values of Markov processes with small sample size. It is also indicated that analysis is basically equivalent to the least mean-square analysis of autoregressive models.

Notes: Abstract The mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) neurons are regarded as contributing to the activation of the cerebral cortex. We have investigated the statistical characteristics of the single neuronal activity in the MRF of cat during two activated states: paradoxical sleep (PS) and state in which the animal is watching birds (BW). 1/f-like spectra are observed for both PS and BW states, being more pronounced for PS state. For the interpretation of these findings, we have applied the clustering Poisson process, which not only gives rise to a 1/f spectrum but also suggests a generation mechanism. The MRF neuronal activities in PS and BW are closely fitted by the clustering Poisson process, both in terms of power spectral density and counting statistics. These results strongly suggest that the activities of MRF neurons in PS and BW can be interpreted as the superpositions of randomly occurring clusters which consist of various number of impulses.

Notes: Abstract The mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) neurons are regarded as contributing to the activation of the celebral cortex. In this paper, the statistical features of single neuronal activities in MRF of cat during dream sleep are investigated; the neuronal spike train exhibits 1/f fluctuations. Counting statistics is applied to the neuronal spike train giving rise to a variance/mean curve which follows at μ-law. For an interpretation of these findings, the clustering Poisson process is applied which not only gives rise to at μ-law but also suggests a generation mechanism. The MRF neuronal activities are closely fitted by the clustering Poisson process and the underlying statistical parameters can be estimated. These findings strongly suggest that neuronal activities can be interpreted as superposition of randomly occuring clusters ( = bursts of spikes).
