The crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Co(py)2(H2O)2Br2] are reported. The space group is P1¯, with one molecule in the unit cell. The cell dimensions are a=6.400(1) A(ring), b=6.789(2) A(ring), and c=8.638(1) A(ring); the angle α=109.06(2), β=103.01(2), and γ=97.50(3) deg. The magnetic susceptibilities of both the polycrystalline powder and single crystals have been measured. The data are quite anisotropic and may be analyzed by the Ising model with g(parallel)=5.99(2) and J/kB=−0.99(2) K. The data show that the substance undergoes magnetic ordering at Tc=3.43(3) K, with the easy axis of spin alignment lying nearly parallel to the a axis. The likely superexchange paths are described.
