Notizen: The optical absorption spectrum of the 1593 A(ring) transition of static (room temperature) and jet-cooled CS2 has been remeasured to determine the temperature dependence of the spectrum and to better characterize the experimental band shapes and intensities. Based on these results and others, current assignment controversies are resolved and the separation between the singlet and triplet components of the excited state, the excited state vibrational frequencies, and electronic and vibronic properties of the excited state are determined.

Notizen: A high resolution electron monochromator that incorporates Vespel polyimide plastic in its construction is described. A great saving in bulk can be realized by mounting the electron optical elements in Vespel tubes rather than mounting them by traditional means. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An (e,3e) spectrometer for the study of double ionization of magnesium by electron impact is described. With the spectrometer the angular and energy distributions of the ejected electrons can be measured over a range of incident-electron energies. The spectrometer incorporates two ejected-electron electrostatic energy analyzers and a tandem electrostatic analyzer for the scattered electrons. Up to eight detectors can be placed at the focal planes of each of the ejected analyzers. This increases the data rate by a factor of 64 over arrangements with two ejected-electron detectors. In order to reduce noise and establish the energy of the final state of the doubly charged residual magnesium ion, triple-coincidence electronics are used with a preprocessing circuit to reduce dead time. The first double-ionization study with the instrument was the ejection of a 2p inner valence electron by a 3.5 keV incident electron accompanied by the subsequent filling of the 2p hole and the emission of a 35 eV Auger electron. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The 300–180 nm (4.1–6.9 eV) optical absorption and 4–10 eV (310–124 nm) electron energy loss spectra of 1,3-cyclopentadiene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene, and 1,3-cycloheptadiene were measured. Three valence and several Rydberg transitions were observed in each molecule. The two strong, optically allowed valence transitions are interpreted as the NV1(B2) and NV3(A+1) transitions (states). The locations of the unobserved A−1 states in cyclic dienes is discussed. Correlations are drawn between the three valence excited states observed here in each cis-diene and those previously reported for trans-butadiene.
