Abstract:
Notes:
Summary It is advantageous to carry out the analysis of complex mixtures of hydrocarbons C4 (C3) to C16 (C17), which are often encountered in connection with investigations of processes for petroleum refining, with capillary columns (100 m×0.25 mm) coated with Polypropylenglycol as the stationary phase using a temperature programme. With Polypropylenglycol it is even possible to separate C3–C4 hydrocarbons. One obtains a relatively large factor for the increase in retention per CH2 group and thereby relatively large separation numbers. The weak polarity of the stationary phase causes a relatively small amount of overlapping of the peaks. In this publication the retention indexes on Polypropylenglycol (Ucon-LB 550 X) for a large number of hydrocarbons at various temperatures and different heating rates are given. The temperature dependence of the retention indexes of branched hydrocarbons, n-olefines-1 and n-olefins-2, in the range from 28–160°C is so small such that no difference was observed between the values obtained isothermally and with temperature programming. Naphthenes show a weak temperature dependence of retention indexes, which however is not significant with temperature programmed operation. The temperature dependence of the retention indexes of aromatics is considerable and with different heating rates leads even to a reversal of sequence of elution. A diagram of the index differences to n-paraffins of the same C-number, or to the n-paraffins which are eluted before the components under consideration, is suggested for the systematic representation of the retention indexes for homologous series. These diagramms are well suited to give in an exact and illustrative manner the systematic behaviour of different classes of compounds and to make the abundance of known retention values easily usable for other workers. The possibility of calculating the index values for the series 2,3-, 2,4- and 2,5-dimethyl paraffins from the corresponding monomethylparaffins has been investigated.
