Notes: [Auszug] Different physical and biological processes prevail at different scales. As a consequence, small-scale experiments or local observations provide limited insights into regional or global phenomena. One solution is to incorporate spatial scale explicitly into the experimental and sampling ...

Notes: [Auszug] Experiments have been conducted on chickens (Old English Games) fourteen weeks old at power levels in the range 10-30 mW/cm2, at a frequency of 16,000 Mc/s and a pulse repetition rate of 8,000 pulses per sec. A horn antenna was arranged so that it could be mounted above, below or at the side of the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The rapidity and compelling nature of this reaction led us to investigate microwaves in relation to the bird strike problem which is now reaching serious proportions in airline operations. Experiments are being conducted to determine the effectiveness of microwave radiation as a means of deterring ...

Notes: Abstract Reproductive seasonality and lunar periodicity of planula release were investigated for the three brooding coralsPocillopora damicornis, Seriatopora hystrix, andStylophora pistillata at Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef. Branch fragments collected from undisturbed colonies in the field were used to determine when planulae were present for all three species, and direct observations of planula release were made on colonies ofPocillopora kept in aquaria. All three species displayed marked seasonal variation in reproductive output, with nearly all reproductive activity occurring over the summer months.Pocillopora exhibited distinct lunar periodicity in planulation, with planula release occurring around three quarter moon, and no planulae being present in samples collected between new and full moons.Seriatopora also displayed lunar periodicity of planula release, although it was not as distinct as forPocillopora, whileStylophora did not show any lunar periodicity.

Notes: The equilibration of water between aqueous gelatin solution and physically separate cakes of ice was observed. Typically, the water content of the solutions reached a nearly steady value several times before final equilibrium, reasons for which are discussed. The equilibrium gelation concentrations were found to be 72 ± 1%, 77 ± 2%, and 80 ± 3% at -10, -21, and -33°C., respectively, in moderately good agreement with predictions based on the vapor pressure measurements of Bull at higher temperatures.

Notes: The preparation of substituted polyphosphazenes has been briefly surveyed. A method of synthesis of a fully substituted poly(diphenyl phosphazene) has been investigated. The product has been characterized and thermogravimetric analysis carried out. The volative products of pyrolysis have been identified and the hydrolytic stability of the polymer tested.
