Description: Solid/liquid distribution coefficients (weight basis) were experimentally determined for a number of trace elements for olivine, orthopyroxene, plagioclase and ilmenite. Values of distribution coefficients were measured at 1200 C and a f sub O2 of 10 to the -13.0 power for liquids similar in composition to the olivine-opx-plagioclase peritectic in the pseudoternary system (Fe,Mg)2SiO4-CaAl2Si2O8-SiO2. Values were also measured at 1140 C and a f sub O2 of 10 to the -12.8 power for liquids similar in composition to high-Ti mare basalts. Major and trace element partitioning and relevant phase equilibria were used to investigate possible parent-daughter relationships between a number of highland samples and highly evolved KREEP-rich materials. Out of about 80 highlands samples tested, 33 were found to be possible parents to the KREEP-rich materials. The average composition of these samples is very similar to that of the Low-K Fra Mauro basalt (LKFM). A model is proposed to explain the production of LKFM-type material and more evolved members of the KREEP suite.

Description: A detailed description is given of the petrology and mineralogy of lunar polymict breccia 14321, which was returned from the Fra Mauro formation on the Apollo 14 mission. Electron probe microanalysis and microscopic studies were made of seven petrographic thin sections of the rock. Three broad genetic classes were found in the thin sections: (1) rounded fragments of pre-existing microbreccia with microscopically recognizable crystal and lithic fragments incorporated in a dark matrix; (2) igneous rock fragments of basaltic composition; and (3) a light colored, somewhat friable matrix which cements the other two classes. The components are classified according to chemical, mineralogical textural, and chronological criteria.

Description: The results of petrographic, major and trace element geochemical, and Rb-Sr isotopic studies of four crystalline matrix breccias and two intergranular to subophitic basalts are reported. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of the basalt fragments to other Apollo 14 KREEP basalts, and the origin of this group as a whole. Considering the high siderophile element content, the balance of evidence favors origin of the Apollo 14 KREEP basalts by impact melting, probably a single melt with slight chemical and isotopic heterogeneities.

Major- and trace-element partitioning and relevant phase equilibria are used to study possible parent-daughter relationships between a number of highland samples and highly evolved KREEP-rich materials. A model is proposed in which low-K Fra Mauro basalt type material was produced by fractionation of large amounts of olivine and lesser amounts of plagioclase from undifferentiated lunar material at about 4.4 AE.

Description: An experimentally determined crystallization sequence for a composition similar to the LKFM breccias and experimentally determined crystal/liquid distribution coefficients are used to calculate the evolution of the abundances of several key elements during the crystallization of LKFM liquids. Results indicate that the LKFM breccias are not themselves precursors to Apollo 15 igneous KREEP, but that compositions slightly poorer in Ti and Fe might be. Consideration of the evolution of Ti and Sm abundances during the differentiation of proposed whole-moon compositions suggests that it may be necessary to appeal to 'unorthodox' mechanisms such as magma hybridization or interaction of magma with genetically unrelated minerals within the lunar crust to produce KREEP-rich liquids having the observed Ti/Sm. It is concluded that the compositions of samples with Sm contents greater than those in LKFM are dominated by igneous processes, while samples with lower Sm contents may be mixtures of an anorthositic component, a Mg-rich Sm-poor component, and a component similar in composition to LKFM.

Description: Petrographic, chemical and isotopic similarities between 14078 and other Apollo-14 KREEP basalts suggest that these samples were derived from the same parent liquid and possibly from the same cooling unit. The liquid was probably generated via meteorite impact. Subtle differences are noted in the shapes of REE patterns of KREEP-rich samples from different landing sites; the origin of these differences is not well understood. Calculated Ti/Sm values in liquids parental to primitive cumulate samples are similar to values proposed for the whole moon.
