Notizen: Summary In a composite membrane with heterogeneous channels, prevention of net volume flow with hydrostatic pressure differences and/or impermeant osmotic solutes may induce positive isotope interaction (coupling of isotope flows) consequent to circulation of volume flow. The permeability coefficient for net flow will then exceed the tracer permeability coefficient. A permeant osmotic solute will induce either positive or negative isotope interaction, according to whether membrane heterogeneity is more marked for the test solute or the osmotic solute, respectively. Thus membrane heterogeneity may account for phenomena commonly attributed to “single file diffusion” or “exchange diffusion”. For sufficiently small flows the general flux ratio relationship for homogeneous membranes will continue to apply.

Notizen: Summary Effects of amiloride analogues on Na transport were studied in isolated skins of the frogRana ridibunda. The pattern of structure-activity relationship of these compounds showed that both the −NH2 group at position 5 and Cl at position 6 of the pyrazine ring of the amiloride molecule were important for their biological activity. The paramount role of the groups at position 5 was further demonstrated by the striking properties of an analogue resulting from dimethylation of that −NH2 group. A stimulation of Na transport, opposite to the effect of amiloride itself, was observed in this instance. The increase in Na transport could already be seen at 10−6 m and was equivalent to the measured increase in Na influx, reversible, dose-dependent, and additive to the natriferic action of oxytocin. Such characteristics resemble those reported with “external” agents like propranolol and La3+. Furthermore, mutual inhibition was observed between the stimulatory effects of this analogue and those of propranolol or La3+. These results suggest that the analogue may be considered as another “external” agent acting at sites of the external membrane distinct from those activated by cAMP but similar to the Ca sites described by Herrera and Curran (Herrera, F.C., Curran, P.F. 1963.J. Gen. Physiol. 46:999).

Notizen: Summary It is often not possible to evaluate a permeability coefficient for net flowP from the small flows produced by physiological gradients of concentration or electrical potential. The common use of a tracer permeability coefficientP x for this purpose, under the assumption thatP x =P, requires that the species be transported passively, and that there be no significant coupling between its flow and that of other chemical species, and between the flows of its tracer and abundant isotopes (isotope interaction). These conditions are often not satisfied. However, for passive transport in the absence of coupling of flows of different chemical species the measurement of tracer flow at two values of electrical potential difference evaluates (P x /P) and thusP. In the presence of coupling of flows of different chemical species, although these measurements no longer evaluateP, they evaluate the partial conductanceG. A graphical method of evaluating (P x /P),P andG is presented.

Notizen: Summary Different biological effects of Ag+ (10−4 M) were found depending on its presence in the outer or the inner solution bathing the frog skin. A marked increase in the electrical conductance and an interference with the action of oxytocin and amiloride were found only when Ag+ was added to the outer solution. Results suggest that Ag+ affects several transport processes, in particular the permeability of the Na entry pathways.

Notizen: Abstract Three types of intersection between coarse shear bands are described. The first is the most numerous and happens in a single compression. The two bands shear each other. The reason why a new band can be sheared by an existing old band seems to be that it is easier for the new band to propagate along the striation direction of the old band rather than along its own direction. The merging of striations, the stretching of molecules, and the displacement of bands are described in some detail. The second type of intersection can be created by two mutually perpendicular compressions. As in the first type, the material inside the intersection is sheared twice, first by the old band and then by the new band. However, unlike the first, the two shears are in opposite directions in the second type of intersection. Both intersections cause sufficient disturbances so that microcracks and new shear bands (both coarse and fine bands) are generated to relieve some stresses. A third type of intersection which takes place also during two mutually perpendicular compressions has a small angle of intersection. The two shears of the material in the intersection are also in nearly opposite directions. However, the disturbance is so small that no microcracks or new shear bands are generated. As a result the bands offer little resistance to each other at the intersection of the third type. For all three types of intersection, the displacement of one band corresponds approximately to the shear strain of the other intersecting band. These observations suggest that molecular ordering or directional defects exist in the coarse shear bands in polystyrene.

Notizen: Abstract On the surface parallel to the shear direction, coarse bands appear as ridges, usually of isosceles cross-section with a height-to-base ratio of about 1/10. They split and join with thickness conservation but a corresponding change of cross-section. The shear strain along the same band is almost a constant with a most probable value of 1.8 but a spread between 1 and 3 among different bands. The bands terminate by reducing the shear strain to zero or by converting themselves to a bundle of fine bands at obstacles. Upon annealing the height of the band ridge is reduced until it disappears. When a banded surface is polished, the band pattern reappears upon either annealing or recompression. However, in the former case, the bands are valleys with reverse shear strain but in the latter they are ridges with almost no strain. Similar behaviour occurs on the polished cut surfaces in the middle of the specimen after annealing. On the side surface, the bands are wavy and they are steps rather than ridges. They also split and join with thickness conservation and they terminate freely. Based on these characteristics, the propagation of coarse bands can be viewed as the motion of macroscopic Volterra dislocations.

Notizen: Abstract The classical yielding theory of Tresca is generalized to include the effects of both hydrostatic pressure and normal stress in the slip plane. The three-parameter theory is the most general for polyhedral yield surfaces. The new theory is applied to the yielding of polystyrene. Two modes of slip: a brittle mode in the form of coarse slip bands, and a ductile mode in the form of fine slip bands, are studied separately. All three parameters are determined for each mode.
