    Description: The principal purposes of the prototype executive software are to provide a system independent interface to the underlying host system and to allow for extension to full IPAD executive services as described in the preliminary design. A basic set of functions is included in the prototype to meet the requirements of the other components of the prototype, principally IPID, the IPAD data management system. The functions were chosen so that they would be readily built on any of the proposed host systems with minimal redesign and execution overhead. The functions fall into five categories: access to host data, access to data files, access to communication services, data transformation, and instrumentation for performance measurement. Communication services provide message delivery between processes in a network of heterogeneous computers. Data transformation services and communication services ensure data type validity and data integrity of messages exchanged between processes.

    Description: A review of the tire research programs which address the various needs identified by landing gear designers and airplane users is presented. The experimental programs are designed to increase tire tread lifetimes, relate static and dynamic tire properties, establish the tire hydroplaning spin up speed, study gear response to tire failures, and define tire temperature profiles during taxi, braking, and cornering operations. The analytical programs are aimed at providing insights into the mechanisms of heat generation in rolling tires and developing the tools necessary to streamline the tire design process and to aid in the analysis of landing gear problems.

    Description: The behavior of various antiskid systems was investigated under controlled conditions. Results from utilizing a single main wheel of a DC-9 aircraft suggest that the systems investigated perform well under most circumstances but there may be room for improvement. For example, it was demonstrated that pressure bias modulation can adversely affect the response of antiskid systems to rapid changes in the runway friction level. Results also indicate that antiskid systems designed to operate at a slip ratio of approximately 0.1 can provide a maximum braking effort without undue loss in the cornering capability of the tire. Time histories of braking friction coefficient were shown to provide a means of determining antiskid system performance and for systems that employed pressure bias modulation it was shown that performance could also be estimated from time histories of brake pressure and torque.

    Description: An effective computational strategy is presented for the large-rotation, nonlinear axisymmetric analysis of shells of revolution. The three key elements of the computational strategy are: (1) use of mixed finite-element models with discontinuous stress resultants at the element interfaces; (2) substantial reduction in the total number of degrees of freedom through the use of a multiple-parameter reduction technique; and (3) reduction in the size of the analysis model through the decomposition of asymmetric loads into symmetric and antisymmetric components coupled with the use of the multiple-parameter reduction technique. The potential of the proposed computational strategy is discussed. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the high accuracy of the mixed models developed and to show the potential of using the proposed computational strategy for the analysis of tires.

    Description: NASA antiskid braking system research programs are reviewed. These programs include experimental studies of four antiskid systems on the Langley Landing Loads Track, flights tests with a DC-9 airplane, and computer simulation studies. Results from these research efforts include identification of factors contributing to degraded antiskid performance under adverse weather conditions, tire tread temperature measurements during antiskid braking on dry runway surfaces, and an assessment of the accuracy of various brake pressure-torque computer models. This information should lead to the development of better antiskid systems in the future.

    Description: The investigation utilized one main gear wheel, brake, and tire assembly of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 series 10 airplane. The landing-gear strut was replaced by a dynamometer. During maximum braking, average braking behavior indexes based upon brake pressure, brake torque, and drag-force friction coefficient developed by the antiskid system were generally higher on dry surfaces than on wet surfaces. The three braking behavior indexes gave similar results but should not be used interchangeably as a measure of the braking of this antiskid sytem. During the transition from a dry to a flooded surface under heavy braking, the wheel entered into a deep skid but the antiskid system reacted quickly by reducing brake pressure and performed normally during the remainder of the run on the flooded surface. The brake-pressure recovery following transition from a flooded to a dry surface was shown to be a function of the antiskid modulating orifice.

    Description: Selected mechanical properties of 18 x 5.5 and 49 x 17 size, type 7 aircraft tires were evaluated. The tires were subjected to pure vertical loads and to combined vertical and lateral loads under both static and rolling conditions. Parameters for the static tests consisted of tire load in the vertical and lateral directions, and parameters for the rolling tests included tire vertical load, yaw angle, and ground speed. Effects of each of these parameters on the measured tire characteristics are discussed and, where possible, compared with previous work. Results indicate that dynamic tire properties under investigation were generally insensitive to speed variations and therefore tend to support the conclusion that many tire dynamic characteristics can be obtained from static and low speed rolling tests. Furthermore, many of the tire mechanical properties are in good agreement with empirical predictions based on earlier research.
