A new technique of exciting electrodeless discharges at microwave frequencies is described which involves a simply constructed device called a termination fixture. The termination fixture has been shown to allow operation of laboratory scale rare gas electrodeless discharges from atmospheric pressure down to pressures of 0.5 Pa (4 mTorr). The stability, tunability, efficiency, and flexibility of this technique represent an advancement beyond conventional means of exciting electrodeless discharges. This device is expected to provide improved spectroscopic light sources, a better technique of molecular dissociation, and a simplified method of providing electrodeless discharges for laboratory experiments.
