Notes: Abstract An immunofluorescence technique was employed to detect the thraustochytrid protist Ulkenia visurgensis (Ulken) Gaertner, originally isolated from an algal bed, in natural samples in Goa, India. Collections were made monthly from September 1985 to November 1986. By treating the samples with antiserum prepared against this organism and conjugated with FITC stain, the protist was regularly found to occur in association with a hydroid. Several cells of the organism were observed in the coelenteron and the hydranth of the hydroid. The thraustochytrid could be repeatedly isolated in cultures from the hydroid. The cells of the protist differed from those in culture in that they lacked ectoplasmic net elements.

Notes: Summary The Chisnell-Chester-Whitham method has been used to study the propagation of diverging plane and cylindrical shock waves through an ideal gas in the presence of a magnetic field having only constant axial and azimuthal components, simultaneously for both weak and strong cases. By assuming an initial density distribution ϱ0 = ϱ′r −W , where ϱ′ is the density at the plane/axis of symmetry andw is a constant, the analytical expressions for shock velocity and shock strength have been obtained. The expressions for the pressure, the density and the particle velocity immediately behind the shock have been derived for both the cases.

Notes: Using the photoluminescence and capacitance-voltage measurements, it has been shown that low-energy electron beam evaporation of Al2O3 on n-type InP induces defects in the interfacial region of the InP-Al2O3 structure. These defects seem to be located as fixed charge traps in the insulator as well as confined within a few hundreds of angstroms of the InP in the interfacial region. By introducing a metallic grid in the path of the evaporating dielectic flux, the substrate was effectively protected from the electron bombardment which resulted in a major improvement of the final metal-insulator-semiconductor device characteristics.

Notes: Entamoeba histolytica (NIH-200) secreted large amounts of acid phosphatase in its external environment when grown axenically in modified TPS-II medium. Fractionation by DEAE-cellulose chromatography of the precipitate obtained from the cell-free medium at 60% ammonium sulfate saturation yielded 3 distinct peaks of enzyme activity. The enzyme in all the peaks showed resistance to tartrate but was inhibited by fluoride, cupnc chloride, ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid, ammonium molybdale and cysteine: however, enzyme associated with different peaks differed in its polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic profiles and behavior towards concanavalin A.

Notes: Zero-field muon-spin-relaxation (μSR) and X-band ESR have been used to study the spin-freezing dynamics in single crystals of the Ising spin glass Fe2−x Ti1+x O5 . Parameters obtained for the power-law and Vogel–Fulcher descriptions of the critical slowing are consistent with other methods for x=0 and indicate significantly slower freezing in Ti-rich samples. Interpretation of cluster effects, observed in x=0.25-μSR data, as a Griffiths-like phase yields an estimate of 61±1 K for the Néel temperature in site-ordered Fe2 TiO5 .

Notes: Contrary to recent predictions, it has been observed that the addition of small quantities of hydrogen, ethanol, and benzene to nitrogen reduce the output power of a nitrogen laser. N,N-dimethylaniline enhances the output power of the laser by 25%. A Penning ionization process is proposed as a mechanism for quenching the B 3Πg state of nitrogen.

Notes: Examination of Auger transition structures of As and x-ray photoelectron spectra of Si indicates a strong influence of the As ion implantation stage on the surface characteristics of (100) silicon. Rapid thermal annealing resulted in the electrical activation of a major portion of arsenic in the implanted zone, but a shallow region confined within a depth of ≈200 A(ring) from the surface contained As complexed with Si and O atoms. Surface characterization results agree with the observed degradation in transport properties of solar cells constructed on the As+ implanted and rapidly annealed (100) p-silicon substrates.

Notes: Abstract The nature of the solutes accumulated in the grains of ten finger millet genotypes grown under rain-fed conditions with moisture stress during panicle and grain development were determined. Although grain yield decreased under stress, the solute potential (SP) of seeds from stressed plants was significantly lower (more negative), probably due to the increase in sucrose content. There were no significant changes in the content of total amino acids, free proline, reducing sugars or potassium. The contribution of sucrose to total solute potential was approximately 32% in seeds obtained from stressed plants as compared with only 15% in seeds from irrigated treatment. The germinability and seedling vigour of the seeds from stressed plants was significantly higher under simulated stress with polyethylene glycol (PEG), but was similar to that of seeds of non-stressed plants under normal conditions.
