    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we propose a unified optimization framework for feature extraction that lets us simultaneously take into account image data and semantic knowledge: We model objects using a language that specifies both photometric and geometric constraints and defines an information-theoretic objective function that measures the fit of the models to the data. We then treat the problem of finding objects as one of generating the optimal description of the image in terms of this language. We have validated our framework by performing extensive experiments on detecting objects in aerial imagery described by simple geometric constraints and have developed two algorithms for generating optimal descriptions. The first one starts with a rough sketch of a polygonal object and deforms the initial contour to maximize the objective function, thus finding object outlines. The second one automatically extracts complex rectilinear buildings from complex aerial images.

    Notes: Summary The effect of cadralazine and its active metabolite CGP 22639 on the covalent binding reaction of C4 and C3 has been studied. Trypsin-Sepharose was used to activate radio-labelled C3 and C4 and binding of the radio-labelled protein to the trypsin-Sepharose was measured. Cadralazine inhibited 50% of the binding of C3 and C4 at concentrations of 19 mmol/l and 15 mmol/l, respectively. Its active metabolite was more potent and inhibited 50% of the C3 and C4 binding at concentrations of 8 and 3.5 mmol/l, respectively. These concentrations are much higher than those found in plasma during therapy. This is consistent with the clinical observation that in patients with normal kidney function cadralazine is not an inducer of SLE.

    Notes: The products derived from the UV photolysis of Fe(CO)5 physisorbed onto porous Vycor glass have been examined by x-ray microprobe analysis, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Although the photolysis and subsequent heatings are carried out in air, spectroscopic data reveal two surprisingly different forms of iron. Isomer shift, pre-edge, and EXAFS data indicate that one product is similar to α-Fe2O3 and consists of an Fe3+ ion octahedrally surrounded by six oxygen atoms at a distance of 1.8 A(ring). Isomer shift, EXAFS, and pre-edge feature analysis show that the second compound, which comprises ∼50% of the reaction product, is mainly elemental iron, in which a central Fe atom is surrounded by approximately eight other Fe atoms at a distance of 2 A(ring). X-ray microprobe analysis shows that aggregation occurs during photolysis due to the diffusion of Fe(CO)5 from the interior into exterior photodepleted volumes of glass. Heating has little effect on product ratio or distribution, but consolidating the glass at 1200 °C leads to further aggregation and formation of magnetically ordered particles that exhibit magnetic hyperfine fields of 370 and 425 kG.

    Notes: The incorporation of residual carbon has been studied for InP grown at low temperatures using TMIn and PH3 by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. n-type conduction is observed with electron concentrations as high as 1×1018 cm−3, and the electrical activation efficiency is 5%–15%. Carbon incorporation is found to be highly dependent on substrate temperature, suggesting that the rate-limiting step is desorption of CHy (0≤y≤3) from the surface during growth. Hydrogen is also incorporated in the layers during growth. The electron mobilities are lower for C-doped InP than for Si-doped InP. InP/InGaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors with C as the p-type base dopant and either Si or C as the n-type emitter dopant have been fabricated and compared. Devices with a carbon-doped base and emitter showed degraded performance, likely as a result of deep levels incorporated during growth of the emitter.

    Notes: Carbon doping of InxGa1−xAs grown on GaAs and InP substrates by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) using CCl4 has been investigated for In mole fractions as high as x=0.53. P-type conduction was obtained over the entire composition range studied, with hole concentrations above 1×1020 cm−3 for x〈0.12, and as high as 1×1019 cm−3 for In0.53Ga0.47As lattice-matched to InP. These high carbon concentrations were achieved by employing very low V/III ratios and low growth temperatures. The alloy composition was found to be dependent on several growth parameters, including CCl4 partial pressure, V/III ratio, and growth temperature. This may be due to surface reactions (etching) involving chlorine-containing compounds during growth. Samples grown at low temperature (∼500 °C) and lattice matched to InP exhibited an increase in hole concentration upon post-growth annealing.

    Notes: The degree of unintentional hydrogen passivation of acceptors in heavily C-doped GaAs (p(approximately-greater-than)1018 cm−3) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition has been found to be a strong function of post-growth cool-down ambient. The carbon concentration in the GaAs and the amount of AsH3 in the cool-down ambient are the most important factors affecting passivation. Carbon acceptors can be reactivated by annealing in N2, then repassivated by heating and re-cooling in an AsH3/H2 or PH3/H2 ambient. Secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis shows that the hydrogen concentration is significantly higher in a C-doped GaAs surface layer which is exposed to the cool-down ambient than in a layer which is buried beneath n-type GaAs. This result is consistent with observations in n-p-n heterojunction bipolar transistor structures, where the fraction of C acceptors passivated in the base region is found to be less than in a single layer grown under identical conditions. Be-doped GaAs grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy has also been heated and cooled in AsH3-containing ambients, but no acceptor passivation is detectable by Hall effect measurements.

    Notes: Abstract The Sackville Waterfowl Park, contains a 19 hectare shallow freshwater wetland created by reflooding a saltwater marsh that was drained three centuries ago. Its primary purpose is to provide wetland habitat and wildlife viewing opportunities to tourists and residents. This newly created, eutrophic wetland supports high densities of waterfowl, 2.1 and 3.3 brood ha−1 in 1991 and 1992 respectively. It is hoped that long term monitoring of the Park's waterfowl population and wetland habitat will contribute to a better understanding of factors controlling breeding waterfowl populations.
