Notes: Abstract Molecular analysis of the transgenes bar and gus was carried out over successive generations in six independent transgenic lines of wheat, until the plants attained homozygosity. Data on expression and integration of the transgenes is presented. Five of the lines were found to be stably transformed, duly transferring the transgenes to the next generation. The copy number of the transgenes varied from one to five in the different lines. One line was unstable, first losing expression of and then eliminating both the transgenes in R3 plants. Although the gus gene was detected in all the lines, GUS expression had been lost in R2 plants of all but one line. Rearrangement of transgene sequences was observed, but it had no effect on gene expression. All the stable lines were found to segregate for transgene activity in a Mendelian fashion.

Notes: Abstract The problem of peristaltic transport induced by sinusoidal waves of a particle-fluid mixture in the presence of a Poiseuille flow, is analysed. The governing equations of motion resulting from the Navier-Stokes equations for both the fluid and particle phases are solved and closed form solutions are obtained for limiting values of Reynolds number, wave number and the Poiseuille flow parameter while the method of Frobenius series solution is used for the general case. It is found that the mean flow is strongly dependent on the Poiseuille flow parameter. The effects of particle concentration in the fluid is well discharged throughout the analysis and the results are compared with the other studies in the literature.

Notes: Abstract An experimental programme is presented for the effect of moisture on the toughness, mode-I and mode-II of aluminium tri-hydrate and polyethylene filled and unfilled quasi-isotropic glass–fibre reinforced epoxy–vinylester resin (GFRP) composites. Specimens were exposed in water at room temperature (20°C) for a period of 8 months and the effect of moisture content on toughness, GIc and GIIc values were obtained at an interval of every 2 months. Some samples were exposed in hot water at 40°C temperature to accelerate the uptake of moisture and produce saturated composites. The results indicate that equilibrium moisture content and diffusion coefficients increase with increase of weight of filler content in GFRP composites which is linked to an increase in microscopic cracking. Also mode-I, toughness of all composites increased with an increase in moisture uptake, mode-II toughness was relatively unaffected. Aluminium-tri-hydrate filled GFRP composites showed a higher moisture uptake, which resulted in higher values of both mode-I and mode-II, toughness than the polyethylene filled and unfilled GFRP composites. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this work was to determine the toughening mechanisms in interlayered quasi-isotropic glass–fibre reinforced polyester resin (GFRP) composites. Particles of polyethylene and aluminium tri-hydrate, Al(OH)3, were mixed with the polyester resin prior to laminating with woven E-glass-fibre cloth. Mode-I, mode-II, and impact tests were performed to determine critical strain energy-release rates (GIc and GIIc), absorbed energy and residual compressive strength for the laminates with and without particulate additions. Mode-I and mode-II delamination toughness were characterized using double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens, respectively, and the delaminated surfaces of specimens were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the interlaminar morphology after fracture. The results indicate that the interlaminar toughness (GIc and GIIc), absorbed energy and residual compressive strength values of the GFRP composite increases with increase of particle content. The improved behaviour of particle containing GFRP is linked to stress-concentration induced plastic deformation and crack bridging. Polyethylene particles increase the toughness of the matrix material, which results in composites with higher values of mode-I, mode-II and impact than the composites with aluminium tri-hydrate particles. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract The problem of blood flow induced by peristaltic waves in a uniform small diameter tube has been investigated. Blood has been represented by a two-fluid model consisting of a core region of suspension of all the erythrocytes, assumed to be a Casson fluid, and a peripheral layer of plasma as a Newtonian fluid. The expressions for dimensionless pressure drop and friction force have been obtained. The results obtained in the analysis have been evaluated numerically and discussed briefly. The significance of the present model over the existing models has been pointed out by comparing the results with other theories both analytically and numerically.

Notes: Abstract. This paper considers the estimation of the ratio of population means when some observations are missing. Four estimators are presented and their bias and mean square error properties are studied.

Notes: We have previously reported that Ca2+ influx into the mitochondria of Hymenolepis diminuta, a rat intestinal eestode, takes place through an electrophoretic uniport system. Sodium and lithium were found to induce efflux of 45Ca2+ from the mitochondria of H. diminuta. The two cations induced the efflux in a hyperbolic and linear fashion, respectively. The efflux as well as an exchange of external Ca2+ with internal 45Ca2+ was inhibited by lanthanum. The type of Ca2+ transport system in the cestode organelle has been discussed and compared with that of the host (mammalian) counterpart.
