Notes: Abstract The distribution of the 8557 theoretically possible structures of polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT) over the different degrees of chlorination and basic terphenyl backbones has been calculated and is presented in detail. As congeners missing chlorine atoms in an ortho position are suspected to be as noxious to organisms as dioxins, the number of these congeners is specified as well. The gas chromatographic retention behavior of 14 PCT single standards is studied on four stationary liquid phases for capillary columns (HP-Ultra 1, HP-5MS, RSL-300 and Polycarbonate) relative to 2,2′,3,4,4′,5,5′-heptachlorobiphenyl and shows no consequent separation of PCT in terms of the degree of chlorination. Individual congeners have been assessed for their suitability as internal standards in PCT analysis.

Notes: Abstract We identified and quantified the major inorganic ions present in a haemolymph of four species of fairy shrimp, to determine its ionic strength, using capillary electrophoresis, non-destructive micro-technique for the analysis of small amounts of body fluids. This is the first speciation and quantitative analysis of inorganic ions in the haemolymph of fairy shrimps.

Notes: Supercritical fluid chromatography was applied to evaluate the direct chiral discriminative properties of Chiralcel OJ, a tris(4-methylbenzoate) cellulose column towards frequently administered drugs. Two groups of acidic drugs, profen and barbiturate derivatives, and a few basic drugs of the benzodiazepine type were analysed. The effect on enantioselectivity of carbon dioxide when using methanol are acetonitrile as primary modifier was studied. Acetonitrile proved to be a good alternative for methanol, especially for the profen compounds that were not well resolved using methanol. The results were compared to normal phase chromatographic applications on the same column. SFC was not necessarily superior to high-performance liquid chromatography. Notes: The chromatographic performance of 50 μm internal diameter (i.d.) fused silica columns coated with up to 2 μm films of immobilized SE-54 (methyl phenyl (5%) silicone) is evaluated under gas chromatographic conditions. The influence of pressure drop on the plate height is discussed. In comparison to thick film 250-530 μm i.d. columns, much higher efficiencies and faster analyses are obtained. Practical examples, performed on a standard GC instrument, illustrate the features of thick film 50 μm i.d. columns.

Notes: A method is described for the detection of citrus juices adulterated by addition of industrial sugar products. The oligosaccharides maltotriose (DP3) and maltotetraose (DP4), both of which are absent from the natural sugar profile of citrus fruits, serve as markers. The sample preparation method includes clean-up on a solid phase ODS cartridge, fractionation of DP3 and DP4 carbohydrates by LC on aminopropyl silica gel, and derivatization of the collected sugars to form the oxime-trimethylsilyl derivatives. Capillary GC analysis is performed on a 30 m × 0.32 mm i.d. polydimethylsiloxane fused silica column applying cool on-column injection and FID detection. The detection limit for maltotriose and maltotetraose is about 1 mg l-1. Several orange and grapefruit juices were evaluated on their authenticity. Adulteration with crystalline sugar products cannot be detected with the described procedure.

Notes: The elution order of the hop α- and β-acids has been studied under different modes of electrokinetic separation. A model is advanced to explain the shorter migration times of the more hydrophobic β-acids compared to the α-acids in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). For quality control of the bitter principles in hops, the ruggedness of electrokinetic separation could be improved by replacing MEKC by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC).

Notes: A simple dual-column gas chromatographic system with a six-port switching valve has been used to separate the atropisomers of PCB congeners 84, 91, and 95 in technical PCB formulations and in extracts of soil and river sediment. A capillary column coated with a methylphenylsiloxane stationary phase (CP-Sil 8) was used as the first column, for retention window selection, and a permethylated β-cyclodextrin (ChirasilDex) capillary column as the main separation column. Because peak overlap could not be eliminated by optimization of column temperature, the enantiomeric ratios of PCB congeners could not be determined from the original chromatograms. The correct enantiomer ratio was determined from the peak areas obtained by deconvolution of the chromatograms. Whereas the PCB atropisomers considered were present in equal concentrations in the technical PCB formulations, analysis of a river sediment sample confirmed different residual concentrations of the atropisomers of congener 95.

Notes: The CGC analysis of 25 organophosphorus and organonitrogen pesticides was optimized on two different stationary phases, namely a 5% diphenyl dimethyl silicone (SE-54 type) and a 50% diphenyl dimethyl silicone (OV-17 type) by selecting the best temperature program conditions, using computer simulation.
