Notizen: Cu (400 Å)/polyimide was mixed with 80 keV Ar+ and N2+ from 1.0×1015 to 2.0×1016 ions/cm2. The same processes were repeated for the Cu (400 Å)/Al (50 Å)/polyimide system which has Al as a buffer layer. The quantitative adhesion strength was measured by a standard scratch test. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to investigate the change in the chemical bonds of the ion beam mixed polyimide substrate and the intermediate effects for the adhesion enhancement in Cu/Al/polyimide. Two distinct tendencies are observed in the adhesion strength: Cu/Al/polyimide is more adhesive than Cu/polyimide after ion beam mixing, and N2+ ions are more effective in the adhesion enhancement than Ar+. The formation of an interlayer compound of CuAl2O4 accounts for the former, while the latter is understood by the fact that N2+ ions produce more pyridinelike moiety, amide group and tertiary amine moiety which are known as adhesion promoters. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A simple relationship between the ratio of atomic transport induced by ion mixing and the activation energies for the impurity diffusion of constituents in a bilayer is presented to describe quantitatively the symmetric and asymmetric atomic transport in the thermal spike induced ion mixing. The model predicts fairly satisfactorily the trend of experimental observations in the bilayer systems which have near zero heats of mixing and relatively high spike activation energies. For instance, the Pd/Co bilayer system shows nearly symmetric atomic transport, since its constituents have similar activation energies for the impurity diffusion.

Notizen: The emission from KCl@B:Sb3+ and KI@B:Sb3+ excited in the A-absorption band was measured as a function of exciting photon energy and temperature. The A-band excitation produced two emission bands for KCl@B:Sb3+ and a single band for KI@B:Sb3+. The definitive assignment of these bands is presented in terms of the adiabatic potential energy surface (APES), in which the effect of the spin–orbit interaction (SO) on the Jahn–Teller (JT) interaction coupling to the Eg mode is taken into account. The polarization spectrum and the angular dependence of polarization ratio of the A-band emission were also studied to determine the symmetry axes of the Sb3+ –vacancies complex. The results indicate that the anisotropy is associated with the relaxed excited state (RES) of Sb3+. It is also found that the JT interaction coupling to the T2g mode and the vacancies, situated in the next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) and the nearest-neighbor (nn) positions to the Sb3+ ion, give rise to an additive perturbation.

Notizen: Electronic transport properties through an ensemble of InAs self-assembled quantum dots are reported. A metal–semiconductor–metal diode with self-assembled quantum dots has been fabricated. Clear staircases are observed in the current–voltage characteristics measured from the diode, and several peak structures are identified in the differential conductance. These conductance peaks are interpreted as due to resonant tunneling through the energy states of the self-assembled quantum dots. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report optical characteristics of linear graded InxGa1−xAs (XIn=0–0.58) buffer layers grown on GaAs by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Two types of wirelike surface structures were observed from the layers grown at two different temperatures. Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and double-crystal x-ray diffractometric measurements indicate that the PL energy and the relaxation of the graded layers were strongly dependent on the top surface structure. InGaAs cap layers were grown on top of the graded buffer layers with a variation of indium composition. A strong PL signal was observed from the top region of the graded layer grown with a lattice-matched cap layer. It suggests that the top region of the grade, similar to a graded well structure, is compressively strained but is of high structural quality without dislocations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Planar-type quantum-dot devices have been fabricated and characterized. Aluminum metal electrodes with interelectrode spacing of 30 nm have been deposited on an InAs self-assembled quantum-dot wafer to form the quantum-dot devices. The current–voltage characteristics measured from the devices, in which a single quantum dot is placed in between the electrodes, exhibit negative differential resistance effects at the temperature above 77 K. They are interpreted as due to three-dimensional–zero-dimensional resonant tunneling through the InAs self-assembled quantum dot. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract. In the spring of 1992 and 1993, an epizootic with severe mortality occurred among cultured goldfish. Carassius auratus (L.), in Aichi and Nara Prefectures in Japan. A herpes-virus was isolated from moribund goldfish that induced cytopathic effects in FHM and EPC cells. The isolate was sensitive to IUdR (5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine), acid (pH 3) and ether. Transmission studies confirmed the pathogenicity of the viral isolate for goldfish while it was not pathogenic for fancy carp, Cyprinus carpio L. Diseased fish had no visible external signs except for listlessness, but internally there was softening and discolouration of the spleen and kidney, and necrotic foci in the haematopoietic tissue, splenic pulp, pancreas, and lamina propria and submucosa of the intestine. Electron microscopy revealed enveloped visions ranging from 170 to 220nm in diameter with hexagonal nucleocapsids (115–117nm edge-to-edge diameter). The disease has been designated as herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis (HVHN), and to date, is the only herpesvirus infection to be described in goldfish.

Notizen: Iridovirus infection causes serious economic damage in marine cultured fish in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and the incidence of this disease has been increasing. Iridovirus of sea bass from offshore Hong Kong was isolated to determine the genetic similarities of the causative agents. The genomic DNA of iridovirus was purified and cloned. Four DNA clones were randomly chosen and sequenced to generate primers for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Corresponding DNA fragments of iridoviruses from sea bass from offshore Hong Kong, red sea bream in Japan and grouper in Thailand were detected. The analogous PCR products from geographically diverse iridoviruses may indicate a widespread distribution of an iridovirus of a single origin.

Notizen: Intrusion-related migmatites comprise a substantial part of the high-grade part of the southern Damara orogen, Namibia which is dominated by Al-rich metasedimentary rocks and various granites. Migmatites consist of melanosomes with biotite+sillimanite+garnet+cordierite+hercynite and leucosomes are garnet- and cordierite-bearing. Metamorphic grade throughout the area is in the upper amphibolite to lower granulite facies (5–6 kbar at 730–750 °C). Field evidence, petrographic observations, chemical data and mass balance calculations suggest that intrusion of granitic magmas and concomitant partial melting of metasedimentary units were the main processes for the generation of the migmatites. The intruding melts were significantly modified by magma mixing with in situ partial melts, accumulation of mainly feldspar and contamination with garnet from the wall rocks. However, it is suggested that these melts originally represented disequilibrium melts from a metasedimentary protolith. The occurrence of LILE-, HFSE- and LREE-enriched and -depleted residues within the leucosomes implies that both quartzo-feldspathic and pelitic rocks were subjected to partial melting. Isotope ratios of the leucosomes are rather constant (143Nd/144Nd (500 Ma): 0.511718–0.511754, ε Nd (500 Ma): −3.54 to −5.11) and Sr (87Sr/86Sr (500 Ma): 0.714119–0.714686), the metasedimentary units have rather constant Nd isotope ratios (143Nd/144Nd (500 Ma): 0.511622–0.511789, ε Nd (500 Ma): −3.70 to −6.93) but variable Sr isotope ratios Sr (87Sr/86Sr (500 Ma): 0.713527–0.722268). The most restitic melanosome MEL 4 has a Sr isotopic composition of 87Sr/86Sr (500 Ma): 0.729380. Oxygen isotopes do not mirror the proposed contamination process, due to the equally high δ18O contents of metasediments and crustal melts. However, the most LILE-depleted residue MEL 4 shows the lowest δ18O value (〈10). Mass balance calculations suggest high degrees of partial melting (20–40%). It is concluded that partial melting was promoted by heat transfer and release of a fluid phase from the intruding granites. High degrees of partial melting can be reached as long as the available H2O, derived from the crystallization of the intruding granites, is efficiently recycled within the rock volume. Due to the limited amounts of in situ melting, it seems likely that such regional migmatite terranes are not the sources for large intrusive granite bodies. The high geothermal gradient inferred from the metamorphic conditions was probably caused by exhumation of deep crustal rocks and contemporaneous intrusion of huge masses of granitoid magmas. The Davetsaub area represents an example of migmatites formed at moderate pressures and high temperatures, and illustrates some of the reactions that may modify leucosome compositions. The area provides constraints on melting processes operating in high-grade metasedimentary rocks.

Notizen: Abstract Changes in the pools of carotenoids and protochlorophyll(ide) were investigated in etiolated cucumber cotyledons treated with norflurazon (NF) and an experimental herbicide KC 6361 (KC). Both the NF- and the KC-treated tissues considerably accumulated the colourless carotenes phytoene and phytofluene with a concomitant depletion of the coloured carotenoids lutein and β-carotene in darkness. However, the profiles of changes in chlorophylls (Chls) and carotenoids were different for the two herbicides. The plants were also influenced by the photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD's), with a more pronounced decline of Chl under high PPFD than under low PPFD. The ratios of protochlorophyll (PChl)/protochlorophyllide (PChlide) were greatly altered due to a decrease and an increase of PChl in the NF- and the KC-treated etiolated tissues, respectively, whereas the PChlide content was not significantly influenced by the inhibitors. Large increase of PChls in the KC-treated tissues seems to derive from the binding of accumulated geranylgeraniol (GG) equivalents, through carotenogenic inhibition, to PChlide. Therefore, the alterations of PChl and PChlide occurring under disturbed carotenogenesis may suggest an interaction between the biosynthetic pathways of Chls and carotenoids. In addition, the great proportion of PChl GG and PChl dihydro-GG in the KC-treated tissues implies that PChl formation is regulated at the level of hydrogenation.
