Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Bivalves are key components of Recent marine and freshwater ecosystems and have been so for most of the Phanerozoic. Their rich and long fossil record, combined with their abundance and diversity in modern seas, has made bivalves the ideal subject of palaeobiological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, however, topics such as the early evolution of the class, relationships between various taxa and the life habits of some key extinct forms have remained remarkably unclear. In the last few years there has been enormous expansion in the range of techniques available to both palaeontologists and zoologists and key discoveries of new faunas which shed new light on the evolutionary biology of this important class. This volume integrates palaeontological and zoological approaches and sheds new light on the course of bivalve evolution. This series of 32 original papers tackles key issues including: up to date molecular phylogenies of major groups; new hard and soft tissue morphological cladistic analyses; reassessments of the early Palaeozoic radiation; important new observations on form and functional morphology; analyses of biogeography and biodiversity; novel (palaeo)ecological studies

Notizen: The Synchrotron Radiation Center operates the Aladdin electron storage ring at energies of 800 meV or 1 GeV in support of a broad range of national and international research programs with a major focus on the study of valence electrons, spectromicroscopy, and nanolithography. Upgrades to the storage ring have improved the stability of the source, and experiments with low emittance lattice configurations show the feasibility of increased brightness for new or enhanced research. Three recently installed undulators, two pure permanent magnet devices and an electromagnetic device, and the associated instrumentation offer experimentalists high flux combined with high resolution. The status of the existing instrumentation, recent scientific results, and an overview of plans for new undulator-based instruments to cover the photon energy range from 7.8 to 400+ eV will be presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The resistive wall mode (RWM) poses a threat to many plasma confinement devices. The continuous rotation of the wall relative to the plasma makes it appear perfectly conducting, because of the skin effect, but this is ineffective if the perturbation locks to the wall. This raises the question of whether a nonuniformly rotating wall is more effective. In this paper we discuss the effect of such nonuniform wall rotation, in both the toroidal and poloidal directions, on resonant and nonresonant RWMs. In the case of toroidal rotation it is shown that at large wall velocity both the resonant and nonresonant RWMs are stabilized, even though the nonresonant mode rotates with the maximum wall velocity. In the case of poloidal rotation RWMs do not lock to the wall and have a complicated behavior at intermediate velocities. However they are again stabilized by large wall velocity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Relaxation is the result of turbulence in a plasma that behaves essentially as an ideal conducting fluid, but has a small resistivity and viscosity. These small effects are locally enhanced by the turbulence and lead to reconnection of magnetic field lines. This destroys an infinity of topological constraints, leaving only the total magnetic helicity as a valid invariant. The plasma therefore rapidly reaches a specific state of minimum energy. This minimum energy "relaxed state" can be calculated from first principles and has many striking features. These depend on the topology of the system. They include spontaneous field reversal, symmetry-breaking and current limitation in toroidal pinches, and flux generation and flux amplification in Spheromaks. In addition the relaxed states can be controlled and maintained by injection of helicity from an external circuit. These features, and the profiles of the relaxed states themselves, have been verified in many laboratory experiments.

Notizen: A 3.5 W fiber-based laser source at 772 nm is demonstrated by using quasiphase-matched second-harmonic generation of a 40 dBm seeded ytterbium–erbium fiber amplifier in PPKTP. A 40% conversion efficiency is achieved across the entire output power range of the EDFA. No optical damage has been observed in the PPKTP over long-term high-power exposure. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The main stakeholder of any valuation is the commissioning party and the outcome of the valuation process will determine for the commissioning party the value of the asset. The second key stakeholder is the valuer. Often, however, there is third stakeholder group, the lending institution. Lending institutions often provide financing to the buyer and the financing decision is often based on the hotel's valuation. Based on a questionnaire survey of hotel valuation stakeholders this study reports the findings as to the perceived suitability of the discounted cash flow (DCF) valuations in respect of hotel property. The findings reported here suggest that the majority of respondents supported the view that the DCF method was the most suitable method in relation to hotel valuations. However, there are indications that the recommended practice of the need for using supporting valuation approaches might not be widely observed or understood. In addition, there was a view among a significant minority of respondents that the DCF method was only applicable for those properties operating at the higher market levels.

Notizen: Guppies Poecilia reticulata from the Rio Grande, Trinidad are heteroplasmic; individuals possess up to nine different-sized mtDNA haplotypes. A PCR survey of mtDNA length variation that included mothers and embryos suggests that a large number of mitochondrial genomes (possibly within a much smaller number of organelles) pass from one generation to the next.

Notizen: Abstract  Tree roots are variable in their growth rates, alternating between periods of elongation and dormancy. This variability may have a strong influence on root anatomy. In the present study, field-grown Pinus banksiana Lamb. roots were divided into four distinct anatomical regions (i.e. white without mycorrhizae, white with mycorrhizae, condensed tannin, and cork). Changes in root growth, the proportions of the root system occupied by the various regions, and cortical plasmalemma surface area (CPSA) were determined for 6- to 9-month-old ectomycorrhizal P. banksiana seedlings during a 3-month period (August through October) in northern Ontario. The region in which the greatest change in length occurred was the condensed tannin zone, which was also the dominant contributor to root length (up to 74% of total). The roots of seedlings grown under artificial conditions had the same zones but in different proportions compared to roots in the field. A correlation was noted between increased root growth, low metacutization, and high soil water availability. The CPSA data were assumed to be a factor influencing ion uptake capacity in a positive manner. Interestingly, increases in CPSA were not directly correlated with changes in root length for field-grown seedlings. The primary contributor to CPSA in the field-grown roots was the ectomycorrhizal zone (approximately 80%). In comparison, the bulk (85%) of the CPSA in the chamber-grown roots was found in the white root region. The conditions under which the seedlings were grown strongly influenced the anatomy of their roots.

Notizen: Abstract.  We analyse a simplified form of the frontal lobe architecture of cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops to determine the manner in which they can learn temporal sequences as part of working memory activity. In particular, we consider how the temporal duration of activity can arise in this setting. We start from a hard-wired version in which temporally extended activity is created by the `long' loop of cortex → basal ganglia → thalamus → cortex, and show it arises from a near saddle-node bifurcation. The manner in which the transition between patterns occurs is also considered. This is then extended to analyse the temporal sequence storage and regeneration abilities of trained networks with a similar architecture. The temporal dynamics of this activity is also analysed. Implications of this for other working memory activities and for understanding the architecture of the frontal lobes are discussed in conclusion.

Notizen: Abstract A fibre-optic of sub-150 fs pulse with wavelength tunability from 790 to 830 nm is demonstrated. The output from a gain-switched DFB laser diode at 1552 nm is amplified and compressed in an EDFA generating a soliton-Raman continuum which was then frequency doubled. The output wavelength was tuned over a 40 nm range with very little variation in the pulse duration and output power.
