Notes: Electron field emission from diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on Si, Ti/Si, and Au/Si substrates by a filtered arc deposition technique was studied. As compared to DLC/Si and DLC/Au/Si, electron field emission from DLC/Ti/Si was enhanced, showing an increased emission current density and emission site density (∼1.2×103/cm2). An emission site density up to 2.2∼2.2×103/cm2 was obtained after the DLC/Ti/Si had been annealed at 430 °C for 0.5 h. A patterned DLC/Ti/Si array fabricated by the oxygen reactive ion beam etching technique showed further field emission enhancement. An emission site density up to 3.2∼3.5×103/cm2 and a threshold field as low as 2.1 V/μm were achieved. It was shown that the low potential barrier at the interface and high local geometric electric field enhancement around the edges produced by reactive ion beam etching were possible causes of the enhancing effects. It could also be explained by Geis' metal-diamond-vacuum triple junction emission mechanism. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Zn1−xMnxTe and Zn1−xMgxTe ternary wide-gap semiconductor alloys were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs substrates over a wide range of compositions (0≤x≤0.75 and 0≤x≤0.67, respectively). Values of the band gap were measured by photoluminescence at 12 K, and by optical reflectivity at room temperature. The wavelength dependence of the indices of refraction n of these ternary systems was also measured for these alloys at wavelengths below their respective energy gaps. The measurements were performed using a combination of the prism coupler method and reflectivity. Compilation of these results allows us to establish a set of empirical parameters for the two alloy families, that can be used to calculate the index of refraction for an arbitrary alloy composition and arbitrary wavelength. It is interesting that the values of n show a surprisingly linear dependence on the corresponding energy gaps for both these alloy systems. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A randomly disordered quantum wire superlattice (d-QWR-SL) structure was fabricated by means of metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Photoluminescence (PL) and the carrier lifetime properties were investigated systematically. The PL intensity was found to be independent of temperatures below 170 K. This thermally stable feature was due to dramatic suppression of the nonradiative recombination in the wire region. The carrier lifetime measurement confirmed the high thermal PL stability in the d-QWR-SL structure. This high thermal PL stability may be due to the state localization in the d-QWR-SL structures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transient band-gap renormalization (BGR) effects are investigated in AlGaAs/GaAs V-grooved quantum structures. The temperature-dependent transient BGR effects in the sidewall quantum well (SQWL) provide direct evidence of the existence of the blocking effect by the necking region barrier on the carrier trapping process. These effects provide a useful method to show the existence of the necking region, particularly for very thin SQWL structures. The temperature-dependent lifetimes of the SQWL and quantum wire (QWR) provide further proof of the carrier trapping process from the SQWL to the QWR. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Dislocation structures are presented for GaAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs heterostructures before and after thermal processing. Cathodoluminescence has allowed nondestructive examination of bulk specimens, while transmission electron microscopy has been used to establish the details of the dislocation configurations. In each as-grown specimen the thickness of the InxGa1−xAs layer was above its critical value, so 60° misfit dislocations were already present. It is shown that new pure edge, i.e., 90°, dislocations are formed at the interfaces by thermal processing at 1040 K. Their Burgers vectors are a/2〈101〉 perpendicular to their 〈010〉 directions. Although individual 90° misfit dislocations are more effective relievers of strain than 60° ones, the self-energy for an array of such dislocations is higher and hence 60° misfit dislocations form first. A model of the formation of 90° edge misfit dislocations is proposed in which the climb of vacancy-producing jogs on pre-existing 60° dislocations leaves a trailing dislocation dipole. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: As the best preserved high- and ultrahigh-pressure (HP and UHP) metamorphic terrane in the Qinling-Dabieshan-Sulu orogen, western Dabieshan is divided into six lithotectonic units along a traverse across the orogen, i.e. from north to south, the Nanwan, Balifan, Huwan, Xinxian, Hong'an and Mulanshan units. In this terrane five eclogite-bearing zones (I–V) are developed. The garnet and clinopyroxene in eclogites from these zones exhibit chemical zoning, suggesting that the rims record general peak temperature and pressure. Thermobarometric study indicates that the peak P–T conditions of eclogite are 550–570°C and 21 kbar for Zone I, 470–500°C and 14–17 kbar for Zone II, 620–670°C and 26–29 kbar for Zone III, 530–560°C and 20–22 kbar for Zone IV, and 490–510°C and 19–20 kbar for Zone V. The symmetrical thermobaric pattern, in conjunction with structural and geochronological data, demonstrates that the Huwan and Hong'an units belong to the same HP slice overlying the UHP slice. This pattern, together with the Mulanshan LT/HP blueschist–greenschist belt in the south, roughly constitutes a ‘normal’ metamorphic zonation. However, clear metamorphic gaps occur between different slices. It is inferred that the LT/HP, HP and UHP slices were broken up from the downgoing slab during subduction and reached different depths along different geothermal gradients. The successive subduction of underlying slices leads to a nearly concomitant uplift of overlying slices, whereas exhumation of the deepest UHP slice was effected by underthrusting of the lower crust of the Yangtze craton.

Notes: According to 't Hooft [Class. Quantum. Grav. 16, 3263 (1999)], quantum gravity can be postulated as a dissipative deterministic system, where quantum states at the "atomic scale" can be understood as equivalence classes of primordial states governed by a dissipative deterministic dynamics law at the "Planck scale." In this paper, it is shown that for a quantum system to have an underlying deterministic dissipative dynamics, the time variable should be discrete if the continuity of its temporal evolution is required. Besides, the underlying deterministic theory also imposes restrictions on the energy spectrum of the quantum system. It is also found that quantum symmetry at the "atomic scale" can be induced from 't Hooft's coarse graining classification of primordial states at the "Planck scale." © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Controlled ice nucleation in a microsized water droplet was examined using a microdroplet suspension method. This method allows us to minimize the effect of the container wall and foreign particles. The influence of the water droplet volume on microdrop nucleation is examined quantitatively. It is found that at the microscale, the volume effect exerts a large influence on nucleation kinetics. This technique enabled us to quantify the effect of lysozyme on ice nucleation kinetics. It turns out that lysozyme promotes ice nucleation at relatively high supercoolings by decreasing the interfacial free energy between the nucleating phase and foreign particles. This quantitative measurement of the interfacial effect of additives (impurities) on ice nucleation kinetics will exert a significant impact on the research on the mechanism of antifreeze and nucleation promotion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fractal structure of nanofiber networks formed in organogels is identified, using an in situ rheological method, together with a coupled supercritical fluid CO2 extraction/scanning electron microscopy technique. The rheological method allows us to have in-line measurements of the fractal growth of the nanofiber networks. In comparison with conventional light scattering techniques, the results obtained from this technique show much less scatter in data. Unlike conventional fractal aggregates, the growth of this type of fractal pattern is governed by a noncrystallographic branching mechanism, which occurs via self-mismatch nucleation and growth. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Interfacial effects of nucleation inhibition and promotion were identified from the nucleation of paracetamol. Unlike the classic interfacial effects, which are caused by the change in nucleation barrier, the nonepitaxial interfacial effects are only associated with kink integration kinetics. Methylparaben inhibits nucleation by increasing the desolvation free energy barrier, which is revealed as the nonepitaxial interfacial effect of nucleation inhibition. Polysaccharide revealed its nonepitaxial interfacial effects of nucleation promotion by lowering the conformation entropic barrier via liquid molecule preordering. Polysaccharide can be regarded as an example of molecular nucleation promoter based on the nonepitaxial interfacial effects. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
