    Seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection data from profile MSM71-P02 of Maria S. Merian cruise MSM71 in the Ligurian Basin, with links to SGY data files (2020)

    Beschreibung: During RV Maria S. Merian cruise MSM71 refraction and wide-angle reflection seismic data were acquired. We present profile P02 consisting of 15 seismic record sections (seg-y format) of the hydrophone components from three ocean bottom hydrophones (OBH204, OBH208, OBH212) and twelf ocean bottom seismometers (OBS201 - OBS203, OBS205-OBS207, OBS209-OBS211, OBS213-OBS215) along the SW-NE oriented seismic profile MSM71-P02, which is situated in the centre of the Ligurian Basin. The profile stretches over a distance of 127 km and was shot using an airgun array of six G-gun clusters with a total volume of 84 l (5440 cu in) at 190 bar. A total of 1079 shots were fired every 60 s (~123 m) with an airgun towed behind the vessel in a depth of 8 m. Data are unprocessed, however, they are corrected for instrument drift along the profile using the symmetry of the direct arrival and the data are time corrected.

    ADCP current measurements (75 kHz) during RV SONNE cruise SO288 (2023)

    Beschreibung: Upper-ocean velocities along the cruise track of Sonne cruise SO288 were continuously collected by a vessel-mounted Teledyne RD Instruments 75 kHz Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in narrowband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 8.0 m, while 100 bins were recorded using a pulse of 1.45 s. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's gyro platforms and the navigation data were used by the data acquisition software VmDas internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (-0.04° +/- 1.1923°) and scale factor (1.0023 +/- 0.0230) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The average interval was set to 120 s. Velocity quality flagging is based on following threshold criteria: abs(UC) or abs(VC) 〉 1.5 m/s, rms(UC_z) or rms(VC_z) 〉 0.3.

    Beschreibung: Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems, called self-cleaning monitoring boxes (SMBs). Usually, the SMBs are changed after ~12 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 4 m depth, salinity is estimated within the SMB from conductivity and interior temperature. No temperature and salinity calibration were performed. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

    Beschreibung: Multibeam bathymetry raw data was recorded in the Pacific during cruise SO267 that took place between 2018-12-11 and 2019-01-26. The data was collected using the ship's own Kongsberg EM 122. Sound velocity profiles (SVP) were applied on the data for calibration. SVP data are part of this dataset publication. This data is part of the DAM (German Marine Research Alliance) underway research data project.

    Beschreibung: The gravimetric data was acquired with a sea gravimeter KSS32-M system, which was installed on RV Sonne near its centre of gravity during the SO267 cruise. The instrumental drift of the data was approximated by repeated gravity observations in the harbour of Suva both at the beginning and at the end of the expedition. In order to tie the measurements to the International Gravity Standardization Net IGSN71, gravimetric measurements with a LaCoste&Romberg gravity metre, model G, no. 480 (LCR G480) were executed both at the pier next to RV Sonne and at the next absolute gravity reference station at the Mineral Resources Department in Suva, Fiji. Additional processing of the data comprised the correction of the Eötvös effect using navigation data and the subtraction of the normal gravity. Data was acquired along a E-W trending profile in the northern Lau Basin at ~ 16°S between the 13.01.2019 and the 14.01.2019.

    Beschreibung: The dataset contains ocean bottom hydrophone (OBH) data acquired along profile P05 during RV Sonne Expedition SO267 (project ARCHIMEDES) to the Lau Basin, Southwestern Pacific in December 2018. This seismic refraction data set contains 34 OBS that all recorded the shots along the ~220 km long seismic transect successfully. Data for two different shot intervals (50m and 150m) were acquired shooting from east to west and from west to east respectively. An 84 l airgun array served as seismic source that was towed behind the vessel 8 m below sea surface. The data were processed using standard methods for relocation of the instrument at the seafloor, clock drift correction, deconvolution and filtering.

    Beschreibung: This dataset includes earthquake locations from a 23 months long Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) experiment conducted in response to the 2014 Mw 8.1 Iquique earthquake at the northern Chilean subduction zone. The experiment is separated into two subsequent OBS networks from December 2014 until October 2016. The accompanying zip-file SEISAN_WAV.zip includes raw waveform data for all earthquakes, the file Nordic.nor (ASCII Table) that includes all phase onset picks of all earthquakes. All data in the zipped archives can be used with the SEISAN seismology software.

    Project LOBSTER: DEPAS and GEOMAR ocean-bottom seismometer operations in the Ligurian Sea in 2017-2018 (2022)

    Beschreibung: The long-term network comprising ocean bottom broadband seismometers (OBS) forms an integral part of the European AlpArray initiative and the German DFG Priority Programme SPP ‚Mountain Building in 4 Dimensions' MB 4D (http://www.spp-mountainbuilding.de/). The instruments are deployed with a mean distance of 25 nm (46km) to the neighboring station (28 nm (51 km) to neighboring three stations) west and north of the island of Corsica. The westernmost instruments are located near the Gulf of Lions and the northernmost instruments were installed off the Ligurian coast. The scientific aim of the LOBSTER project is manifold: (1) characterisation of the crust and upper mantle of the Ligurian Basin and the transition from the oceanic to the continental domain; (2) understanding the structures and kinematics of rifting during the opening of the Ligurian Sea; (3) imaging the prolongation of the Alpine front; and (4) studying the recent deformation in the Ligurian Basin and the surrounding coastal areas as imaged through local seismicity. Additionally, the AlpArray OBS network was important to complete the densely spaced AlpArray broadband seismic network. The technical aim of the LOBSTER project is to provide consistent data that can be smoothly integrated into the land data. Instruments have been deployed in June 2017 by RV Pourquois Pas and recovered after 8 months of recording in January 2018 by RV Maria S Merian (MSM71).
