Description: Although food has been proposed as a possible factor on population regulation of small mammals, evidence of food restriction in field conditions is still lacking. Food restriction is generally thought to occur in high-density years of oscillating populations of small mammals. By using two body condition indices (muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index), we investigated variations of body condition of the greater long-tailed hamster (Tscherskia triton) and the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) in the Raoyang County of the North China Plain during a population decline- and low-phase from 1998 to 2003. Our laboratory experiments showed that food restriction reduced muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of greater long-tailed hamster. We found there were significant differences in body condition of hamsters over the six years. Both the muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of T. triton were significantly and positively correlated with its yearly trap successes, which reflected yearly population densities. Muscle protein concentration of C. barabensis was positively correlated with the total yield of the wheat. This observation supported the hypothesis on the in-phase relation between food resources or availability and rodent abundances. During the four seasons, muscle protein concentration of two species was highest in autumn, and lowest in summer. These two body condition indices of wild T. triton in summer and in low phases were similar to 60% food restricted animals raised in the laboratory, but significantly lower than nonfood-restricted animals. Our results indicated that malnutrition occurred in summer when food was not abundant, and in low density years with low grain production (an index reflecting food abundance of rodents) in our study region. Therefore, we concluded that food limitation may play an important role in seasonal and inter-annual population fluctuation of these two hamster species.

Notes: We report systematic studies of the femtosecond transient reflectivity at 2 eV in partially oxygen-depleted Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films exhibiting the resistive superconducting transition at 60 K. Our measurements, performed at room temperature, reveal that in 60 K films, the Fermi level in the Cu-O2 plane lies approximately 2 eV above the filled copper d9/d10 band. By mapping the transient optical response across a 1 cm2 film, we show that the position of the Fermi level is very sensitive to the apparent local variations of the film oxygen content, which gives rise to dramatically different transient optical responses. We also observe a strong transient reflectivity dependence on intensity, which can be attributed to the shift of the Fermi level caused by nonequilibrium hole heating.

Notes: We report our studies on electrical properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O test devices and circuits fabricated using a laser-writing patterning technique. The patterning procedure is noninvasive, does not require a patterning mask, and does not contaminate nor damage the surface of patterned films. Our laser-written, oxygen-rich lines (typically 4–100 μm wide) possess excellent superconducting properties with zero resistivity at 89.5 K and critical current densities of above 2 MA/cm2 at 77 K. On the other hand, oxygen-poor regions are semiconducting and exhibit thermally activated transport, well described by a three-dimensional, variable-length hopping process. Their resistance below 100 K is above 10 MΩ/square. A number of test structures patterned by laser writing, such as a microbridge, coplanar transmission line, open-ended microwave resonator, photoconductive switch, and Y-Ba-Cu-O field-effect transistor, have been presented.

Notes: Isocitrate dehydrogenases [isocitrate:NAD(P)+ oxidoreductase (decarboxylating), E.C. 1.1.1.42] are ubiquitous metabolic enzymes which occur in all living organisms. The NADP+- dependent mitochondrial isocitrate dehydrogenase from pig heart has been crystallized from polyethylene glycol/sodium sulfate mixtures in the presence of Mg2+ and isocitrate. The crystals belong to space group C2 with a = 137.0, b = 113.4, c = 65.0 Å and β = 98.5°, and diffract to at least 2.4 Å resolution. There are two protein monomers per asymmetric unit which are related by non-crystallographic twofold symmetry.

Notes: Abstract Modern developments in laser and computer technology, electronic cameras, and digital image processing techniques allow to generate planar distributions of quantitative data in turbulent flows. Large amounts of data can be processed easily and analyzed statistically. With these tools, it is possible to quantitatively visualize turbulent coherent structures, even in flows of high Reynolds number, and measure characteristic spatial quantities like vorticity, length scales, spatial correlation functions, etc. These potentials in analyzing spatial characteristics of turbulent flows are demonstrated with two different methods of quantitative flow visualization: speckle photography as a representative of the line-of-sight methods, and particle image velocimetry belonging to the methods that rely on the scattering of laser light from tracer particles.
