Notes: The non-specific immune parameters are useful to determine the health status of fish and to evaluate the immunomodulatory substances for fish farming as markers of pollution and disease resistance. Some of the important parameters, viz. superoxide production by neutrophils through nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assay; haemagglutination (HA), haemolysin (HLY) and bacterial agglutination titres; myeloperoxidase (MPO), and lysozyme activities, and alternative complement levels in serum of the juveniles of three Indian major carp species (Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla and Labeo rohita) were measured to establish their physiological normal range. A wide variation among the individuals within a species in the ranges of the most of the immune parameters was recorded. Significantly higher levels in the mean values of HA, HLY, bacterial agglutination titres; superoxide production by neutrophils in nitroblue tetrazolium assay; serum MPO and lysozyme activities, i.e. 371.20, 4.60, 18.80, 0.40, 0.62 and 6.55 μg ml−1, respectively, were obtained in L. rohita except a much lower alternative haemolytic complement activity (29.06 units ml−1) compared with the other two species. In most of the parameters, L. rohita showed the highest value, possibly indicating its more natural resistance compared with the other two species.

Notes: The immunomodulatory effects of dietary administration of 3,3′,5-triiodo-l-thyronine (T3) at 0, 1, 5 and 10 mg  kg−1 of diet for 60 days in rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings were studied. Oral administration of T3 at all dose levels resulted in significantly (P〈0.05) higher serum T3 levels, total serum protein and globulin levels, and reduced albumin–globulin ratio (A : G) compared with the control group, whereas feeding of T3 at 5 and 10 mg kg−1 diet enhanced the growth and superoxide production by neutrophils. At the end of the 60-day experimental period the optimum dosage of T3 appeared to be the 5 mg  kg−1 diet for rohu fingerlings, resulting in a significantly higher specific antibody titre against formalin-killed Aeromonas hydrophila and lowering the mortality percentage against the A. hydrophila challenge.

Notes: Abstract Dextran, an extracellular bacterial polysaccharide, was subjected to reaction with ceric ammonium nitrate in aqueous nitric acid at varying temperatures. The polymer has been found to be degraded due to the selective oxidative cleavage of vicinal glycol units present in the monosaccharide unit of each chain. The aldehyde groups produced upon cleavage at low temperature were found to undergo further oxidation to acids and formic acid with rise in temperature of the reaction. The course of the reaction has been followed by cerimetry and by spectrophotometrical measurements. The effect of the concentration of reacting components on the reaction has been studied and various kinetic aspects have been evaluated. Depending on the kinetic results, a plausible reaction mechanism for the oxidative degradation and the subsequent reactions have been suggested by the study of the changes of solution viscosity and initiation of graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers by Ce(IV)/dextran mixture. Various thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated.

Notes: Summary In 1970, Halina Swiatak considered the functional equation $$\begin{gathered} f(xyz) + f(xyz^{ - 1} ) + f(xy^{ - 1} z) + f(x^{ - 1} yz) \hfill \\ = 4\{ f(x) + f(y) + f(z)\} + 2\{ g(x)g(y) + g(y)g(z) + g(x)g(z)\} , \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ wheref andg are functions defined on an arbitrary abelian group and taking values in an arbitrary commutative ring without proper zero divisors. She determined the general solution in the caseg(e) ≠ 0, wheree is the unit element of the group, and asked what the general solution is. In this paper, we determine the general solution of the above equation and some related functional equations. Further, we do not assume the group to be abelian but we assume thatf satisfies the Kannappan condition.

    Notes: Summary. In this paper, we study the class of functions whose second difference admits product form. In particular, we determine the general solution of the functional equation ¶¶f (x 1 y z , x 2 y 2 ) - f (x 1 y 1 , x 2 y 2 -1 ) - f (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 2 ) + f (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 2 -1 ) = g (x 1 , x 2 ) h (y 1 ,y 2 ) (FE) ¶with f satisfying the conditions ¶¶f (x 1 y 1 z 1 , x 2 ) = f (x 1 z 1 y 1 , x 2 ) and f (x 1 ,x 2 y 2 z 2 ) = f (x 1 , x 2 z 2 y 2 )(KC)¶ for all $ x_i, y_i, z_i \in \bf {G}_i (i = 1,2) $ , where G 1 and G 2 are arbitrary groups. Since we do not assume the groups to be abelian, the condition (KC) plays an important role for solving the (FE). The general solution of (FE) with (KC) is determined by deriving two related functional equations ¶¶g (x 1 y 1 , x 2 y 2 ) + g (x 1 y 1 , x 2 y 2 -1 ) + g (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 2 ) + g (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 2 -1 ) = g (x 1 , x 2 ) p (y 1 , y 2 ) ¶ and ¶h (x 1 y 1 , x 2 y 2 ) - h (x 1 y 1 , x 2 y 2 -1 ) - h (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 2 ) + h (x 1 y 1 -1 , x 2 y 1 -1 ) = p (x 1 , x 2 ) h (y 1 , y 2 ). ¶The functional equation (FE)} generalizes a functional equation studied by J. Baker in 1969, McKiernan in 1972, and Haruki in 1980.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider a sum form functional equation f(xy) + f(x(1-y)) + f(y(1-x)) + f((1-x)(1-y)) = 0 which arises in characterizing information measures. We will cast it in distributions; and show that for regular distribution we obtain the classical solution.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto cotton-cellulose has been carried out using hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) as initiator. Aqueous-methanolic solution of perchloric acid has been chosen as the reaction medium. The effect of monomer, initiator, acid, reaction medium, and temperature on the graft percentage has been found out. The reactions have also been carried out in the presence of polymerization, inhibitors, and retarders, such as hydroquinone and transition metal salts like CuSO4, FeCl3, etc. The grafted samples, after exhaustive separation of homopolymers and purification, were subjected to various chemical, mechanical, and thermal testings. The results of various analyses have been compared with the reference, and the improvement in the graft has been evaluated. A suitable mechanism for the grafting processes has been suggested, in accordance with the experimental results.
