    Beschreibung: Measurements were made of the magnetic properties of 13 sediment samples from cores spanning the entire depth of Hole 503A. The principal aim was to make a preliminary assessment of the magnetic fabric of material obtained from hydraulic piston coring (HPC) which, though considerably bioturbated, might retain substantial traces of any depositional alignment of magnetic grains. Earlier measurements on Deep Sea Drilling Project cores (Rees, 1971; Rees and Frederick, 1974; Hailwood and Sayre, 1979) suggested that the improved HPC sampling technique should, other things being equal, provide good magnetic fabric information. The Hole 503A sediments were known from shipboard measurements to possess comparatively strong stable remanence and therefore seemed likely subjects for this assessment.

    Beschreibung: Nitrogen in fossil fuels is present in pyrrolic- and pyridinic-functional groups. In contrast, organic nitrogen in living organisms is overwhelmingly found in amino acids in proteins and peptides. Petroleum is the result of the maturation of the organic remains of organisms, so what causes the change in nitrogen functionality between organisms and oil, and when does it occur? Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) supported by elemental analysis, biochemical analysis, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography with atomic emission detection (py43C-AED) for nitrogen, surface sediments from the Peru upwelling region were shown to contain at least four different organic nitrogen-containing functional groups: amino, pyrrole, pyridine and (tentatively) quaternary nitrogen. The percent in amino groups is at most 40-45%, and possibly as little as 10-15%. Heterocyclic nitrogen (pyrroles and pyridines) makes up a greater proportion of the total than amino N, with pyrroles more abundant than pyridines. With increasing burial depth, the percentage of total N present as amino nitrogen declines to low levels, whilst the proportion present as (tentatively) quaternary nitrogen increases. Pyrroles are always more abundant than pyridines. These semi-quantitative data suggest that the pyrrolic and pyridinic structures, found in petroleums and coals, are present at a very shallow burial depths in the Peru upwelling sediments.

    Beschreibung: Organic-rich diatomaceous muds from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 112 (offshore Peru) are the subject of a comprehensive organic diagenetic study covering the burial interval, 〈1 to 〉100 m. The organic matter has been classified in terms of its elemental, biochemical, and geochemical compositions. About 60% of the organic carbon in sediments from 〈1 m can be attributed to hydrolyzable, biochemical constituents, while at 22 m this figure decreased to 20%. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry chromatograms of these same sediments contain mainly hydrocarbons and nitrogenous compounds, with low amounts of other heteroatomic compounds, even though the total organic matter is rich in oxygen (about 35 atoms per 100 carbon atoms) and sulfur (1 to 5 atoms per 100 C atoms). Overall, the organic matter in these sediments, even at these shallow depths and young ages, has many of the geochemical features of far more deeply buried sediments, providing further strong evidence for the claim that "kerogen-formation" is a very early diagenetic process.
