Description: We study the dynamic changes of electron energy distribution (EED) through systematically analysing the quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 in different states. With Markov chain Monte Carlo technique we model fourteen SEDs of 3C 279 using a leptonic model with a three-parameter log-parabola EED. The 14 SEDs can be satisfactorily fitted with the one-zone leptonic model. The observed rays in 13 states are attributed to Compton scattering of external infrared photons from a surrounding dusty torus. The curved ray spectrum observed during 2014 2–8 April is well explained by the external Compton of dust radiation. It is found that there is a clear positive correlation between the curvature parameter b of the EED and the electron peak energy $\gamma ^{\prime }_{\rm pk}$ . No significant correlation between b and the synchrotron peak frequency s is found, due to the varied product of Doppler factor and fluid magnetic field from state to state. We interpret the correlation of $b-\gamma ^{\prime }_{\rm pk}$ in a stochastic acceleration scenario. This positive correlation is in agreement with the prediction in the stage when the balance between acceleration and radiative cooling of the electrons is nearly established in the case of the turbulence spectral index q = 2.

Description: Uranium contamination poses a huge threat to human health due to its widespread use in the nuclear industry and weapons. We proposed a simple and convenient wet-state SERS method for uranyl detection based on the citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticles. The effect of citrate on the detection performance was also discussed. By using the citrate as an internal reference to normalize the peak of uranyl, a quantitative analysis was achieved and a good linear relationship of uranyl concentration from 0.2 to 5 µM with the limit of detection of 60 nM was obtained. With its simplicity, convenience and cost-effectiveness, this method has great potential for the detection of other molecules also.

Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉The base of the Emsian, which is defined by the first appearance of the conodont 〈span〉Polygnathus kitabicus〈/span〉, has never been successfully demonstrated in the South China Block (including Guangxi and eastern Yunnan). As a result, we studied conodonts from the lowermost part of the Shizhou Member of the Yukiang Formation at the Dacun-1 section in the Liujing area, Guangxi. This new investigation has revealed a conodont fauna only consisting of 〈span〉Polygnathus pireneae〈/span〉, 〈span〉P〈/span〉. 〈span〉sokolovi〈/span〉, 〈span〉P〈/span〉. 〈span〉kitabicus〈/span〉, 〈span〉P〈/span〉. sp. and 〈span〉Pandorinellina exigua philipi〈/span〉, which can be assigned to the uppermost part of the 〈span〉pireneae〈/span〉 Zone and the lowermost part of the 〈span〉kitabicus〈/span〉 Zone in ascending order. The Pragian/Emsian boundary at the Dacun-1 section is located in the highest thick-bedded limestone bed that can be observed in the lowermost part of the Shizhou Member. Therefore, this is the first time that the lower boundary of the Emsian defined by the lowest occurrence of 〈span〉P〈/span〉. 〈span〉kitabicus〈/span〉 is reported in the South China Block. However, the scarcity of suitable limestone samples for conodont analysis in the middle and upper parts of the Shizhou Member precludes definitive identification of the upper boundary of the 〈span〉kitabicus〈/span〉 Zone in the Liujing area.〈/span〉

Description: Ethanol made from corn now constitutes approximately 10% of the fuel used in gasoline vehicles in the U.S. The ethanol is produced in over 200 fuel ethanol refineries across the nation. We report airborne measurements downwind from Decatur, Illinois, where the third largest fuel ethanol refinery in the U.S. is located. Estimated emissions are compared with the total point source emissions in Decatur according to the 2011 National Emissions Inventory (NEI-2011), in which the fuel ethanol refinery represents 68.0% of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), 50.5% of nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO 2 ), 67.2% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and 95.9% of ethanol emissions. Emissions of SO 2 and NOx from Decatur agreed with NEI-2011, but emissions of several VOCs were underestimated by factors of 5 (total VOCs) to 30 (ethanol). By combining the NEI-2011 with fuel ethanol production numbers from the Renewable Fuels Association, we calculate emission intensities, defined as the emissions per ethanol mass produced. Emission intensities of SO 2 and NOx are higher for plants that use coal as an energy source, including the refinery in Decatur. By comparing with fuel-based emission factors, we find that fuel ethanol refineries have lower NOx, similar VOC and higher SO 2 emissions than from the use of this fuel in vehicles. The VOC emissions from refining could be higher than from vehicles, if the underestimated emissions in NEI-2011 downwind from Decatur extend to other fuel ethanol refineries. Finally, chemical transformations of the emissions from Decatur were observed, including formation of new particles, nitric acid, peroxyacyl nitrates, aldehydes, ozone and sulfate aerosol.

Description: 〈p〉Recently, several captivating topological structures of electric dipole moments (e.g., vortex, flux closure) have been reported in ferroelectrics with reduced size/dimensions. However, accurate polarization distribution of these topological ferroelectric structures has never been experimentally obtained. We precisely measure the polarization distribution of an individual ferroelectric vortex in PbTiO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉/SrTiO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 superlattices at the subunit cell level by using the atomically resolved integrated differential phase contrast imaging in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. We find, in vortices, that out-of-plane polarization is larger than in-plane polarization, and that downward polarization is larger than upward polarization. The polarization magnitude is closely related to tetragonality. Moreover, the contribution of the PbO bond to total polarization is highly inhomogeneous in vortices. Our precise measurement at the subunit cell scale provides a sound foundation for mechanistic understanding of the structure and properties of a ferroelectric vortex and lattice-charge coupling phenomena in these topological ferroelectric structures.〈/p〉

Description: Heavy ions from the ionosphere that are accelerated in the cusp/cleft have been identified as a direct source for the hot plasma in the plasma sheet. However, the details of the acceleration and transport that transforms the originally cold ions into the hot plasma sheet population is not fully understood. The polar orbit of the Cluster satellites covers the main transport path of the O + from the cusp to the plasma sheet, so Cluster is ideal for tracking its velocity changes. However, because the cusp outflow is dispersed according to its velocity as it is transported to the tail, due to the velocity filter effect, the observed changes in beam velocity over the Cluster orbit may simply be the result of the spacecraft accessing different spatial regions, and not necessarily evidence of acceleration. Using the CIS/CODIF instrument onboard Cluster, we compare the distribution function of streaming O + in the tail lobes with the initial distribution function observed over the cusp and reveal that the observations of energetic streaming O + in the lobes around −20 R E are predominantly due to the velocity filter effect during non-storm times. During storm-times, the cusp distribution is further accelerated. In the plasma sheet boundary layer, however, the average O + distribution function is above the upper range of the outflow distributions at the same velocity during both storm-and non-storm times, indicating that acceleration has taken place. Some of the velocity increase is in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, indicating that the E × B velocity is enhanced. However, there is also an increase in the parallel direction, which could be due to non-adiabatic acceleration at the boundary or wave heating.

Description: Eukaryotic translation termination results from the complex functional interplay between two eukaryotic release factors, eRF1 and eRF3, and the ribosome, in which GTP hydrolysis by eRF3 couples codon recognition with peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis by eRF1. Here, using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and flexible fitting, we determined the structure of eRF1–eRF3–guanosine 5′-[β,γ-imido]triphosphate (GMPPNP)-bound...
