Notes: Abstract Alcohol dehydrogenase II (ADH II, structural genealcB) was purified from a strain H1035,biA1; alcE1; alc500 alcD1, which produces 100-times more ADH II activity than thealcAalcR deletion strain (alc500). Antibodies were raised against this ADH, and were used to screen a cDNA library in γgt11. We have isolated the gene for an ADH which is over-expressed in H1035, and which we believe to be thealcB gene; cDNA and genomic clones were sequenced. The sequence contains three introns and encodes a protein of 367 amino acids. This protein shows a clear level of identity to a range of alcohol dehydrogenases, but is no more closely related to the ADH I and ADH III previously described inA. nidulans than to the ADHs ofS. pombe andS. cerevisiae. The significance of consensus sequences found in the 5′ region of the gene is discussed in relation to the regulation of the gene.

Notes: This paper reports on initial results from the first device tested of a “second generation”Pt-SiC Schottky diode hydrogen gas sensor that: 1) resides on the top of atomically flat 4H-SiCwebbed cantilevers, 2) has integrated heater resistor, and 3) is bonded and packaged. With properselection of heater resistor and sensor diode biases, rapid detection of H2 down to concentrations of 20ppm was achieved. A stable sensor current gain of 125 ± 11 standard deviation was demonstratedduring 250 hours of cyclic test exposures to 0.5% H2 and N2/air

Notes: E-service is a critical strategic marketing consideration today for many firms, based largely on the promise of more cost-effective models of self-service relative to large (and expensive) call centers for technical support and customer service. The rapidly emerging electronic customer relationship management (e-CRM) industry provides the primary tools for implementing e-service. Interestingly, the e-CRM industry faces the same challenges and strategic marketing considerations as their organizational customers, in that they must deliver exceptional service and support to the companies purchasing/using e-CRM software. A review of organizational mission/vision statements suggests that e-CRM companies are generally positioning themselves as exemplars of customer satisfaction provision and relationship management. However, recent industry analysis suggests that their organizational customers generally report low to ambivalent ratings on customer satisfaction measures (our study also supports these findings). This discrepancy could be partly attributed to very little empirical inquiry having appeared to date to assess the efficacy of existing relationship marketing theories within this fast-moving industry. The current study provides an exploratory investigation that looks at the well-established (in other marketing settings) relative influences of quality, customer satisfaction, and loyalty in the formation of future purchase intentions and word-of-mouth behaviors within the e-CRM industry. Concludes that e-CRM marketers must first identify means of increasing the overall level of customer satisfaction within their industry, and then begin to consider moving beyond customer satisfaction toward broader loyalty-based strategic marketing objectives to support their relationship marketing practices. Practitioner and research implications of the reported study are discussed.

Notes: Precise heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields to 2 T have been performed on a CoO⋅Al2O3⋅SiO2 (40–10–50 mol %) spin glass in the temperature range 2.5–10 K. Analysis of the magnetic field dependence shows that the magnetic specific heat Cm can be expressed as Cm/T=Cm(H=0)/T−bHp at a given temperature T. p(T) shows a broad minimum with values of p ranging from 2 at T(very-much-greater-than)Tf and T(very-much-less-than)Tf to 0.9 as T approaches Tf(≈6 K), while b(T) shows a fairly sharp maximum also centered at Tf. This nonquadratic H behavior suggests that the free energy must contain a term similar to the singular term responsible for the nonlinear susceptibility and that this term also dominates the specific heat as T approaches Tf.

Notes: A systematic heat capacity and ac magnetic susceptibility study has been performed on a magnetic ternary glass system—MnO⋅Al2O3⋅SiO2—with Mn concentrations varying from 6 to 19 at. %. At temperatures above 70 K, the susceptibilities follow a Curie–Weiss behavior with negative paramagnetic Curie temperatures and Bohr magneton numbers corresponding nearly to the free ion values of Mn++. However, below 70 K, all glass samples show strong deviations from the Curie–Weiss behavior (a decrease in 1/χ) culminating in spin-glass susceptibility maxima at liquid-helium temperatures for Mn concentrations above 9 at. %. These results suggest a formation of antiferromagnetic clusters which grow in size with decreasing temperature and become "infinitely'' large as the spin-glass freezing temperature is approached. Since the specific heats of glasses do not follow a simple temperature dependence in the temperature range of 1–60 K, calorimetric measurements on several nonmagnetic aluminosilicate glasses were performed in order to accurately determine the magnetic specific heat contribution Cm for the Mn aluminosilicate glasses. A broad maximum in Cm/T is observed in the vicinity of the spin-glass freezing temperature and nonnegligible Cm values are still present at temperatures greater than 50 K (〉10Tf). Only a small fraction of the total magnetic entropy (∼7–8% of cR ln 6) is accounted for between 0 K and Tf, in agreement with the idea that spin-glass ordering in this system is dominated by short-range interactions.

Notes: [Auszug] The viral DNA is specifically oriented within the bacteriophage particle to accommodate a 78-nucleotide hairpin loop at one end of the virion13. This end of the particle also carries approximately five copies of each of two minor coat proteins, gVIIp and glXp, encoded by bacteriophage genes VII and ...

Notes: Summary The Escherichia coli aspartase gene aspA has been expressed in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans using the powerful constitutive gpdA promoter and trpC terminator, both from A. nidulans. Multiple, but not single, copies of aspA overcome nutritional deficiencies resulting from the loss of catabolic NAD-linked glutamate dehydrogenase. They also circumvent certain nutritional deficiencies resulting from loss of the positive-acting regulatory gene product mediating nitrogen metabolite repression. Both of these cases of physiological suppression involve the aspartase-catalyzed catabolism of aspartate to ammonium plus fumarate. No physiological evidence for the opposite reaction leading to aspartate synthesis was obtained as multiple copies of aspA did not affect the phenotype resulting from the loss of anabolic NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase. The use of vectors containing aspA and recipients lacking NAD-linked glutamate dehydrogenase is an efficient means of selecting multicopy transformants in A. nidulans and also offers the possibility to select strains having increased aspartase levels from original transformants.
