Notes: [Auszug] A search of published information and local records regarding two outbreak regions of the red locust, the Mweru wa Ntipa in Northern Rhodesia and the Rukwa Valley in Tanganyika, suggested that wet periods of years were always unfavourable to locust numbers and dry periods were sometimes ...

Notes: [Auszug] DURING experiments on the oxygen consumption of Blatella germanica, it was observed that one specimen which was used on the day of its last moult, when it was still pale in colour, had a respiratory rate about 50 per cent higher than the normal. Experiments were accordingly undertaken in which ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a recent paper, Bodenheimer1 has recorded observations on the temperature-preference of various insects. In his apparatus there is a gradient of temperature, and a number of animals which he puts into the apparatus are free to move along the gradient. The temperature at which ...

Notes: [Auszug] In the experiments, spherical particles were supported in planes normal to the principal axis of flow, as shown in Fig. 1. The spheres, 0-25 in. in diameter, were drilled centrally, threaded on to 0-01 in. diameter nylon line and fixed in position. The line was secured at either end to identical ...

Notes: Recently developed effective stress-controlled geophysical property models are used in passive-margin slope instability analyses including simulated earthquake motion. The pressure–temperature (P–T) history of sediment-hosted gas hydrate may significantly alter the geophysical property profile of the sediment column (e.g. metastable cement or increased pore pressures). This can result in significant amplification of earthquake ground motion, and thus seabed instability, where hydrates are present. Published studies suggest destabilization of these high-pressure/low-temperature sediment-hosted hydrates could trigger catastrophic slope failures with consequent liberation of ‘greenhouse’ gases and significant effects on global climate. To provide improved ground models for slope instability analyses we are investigating the influence of P–T history on hydrate distribution in sediments through the development of laboratory techniques to enable geophysical quantification of hydrate morphology and fabric on hydrate stability.

Notes: [Auszug] THE most commonly effective method of destroying locusts at present is to poison the hoppers (nymphs) before they can fly. Some kind of bait, such as moistened bran, which is eaten in preference to other food, is poisoned with benzene hexachloride (hexachlorocyclohexane, 'Gammexane', 'Benhex') and ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN recent years, the study of animal reactions to elementary physical stimuli has extended greatly, both in the laboratory and in the field. During this process, it has been necessary to modify somewhat Kühn's1,2 classification based on the externally observable characteristics ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT has been shown by Ullyott1 that the aggregation reaction of the flatworm, Dendroccelum lacteum, in a gradient of light intensities, can be described in terms of the rate of change of direction and the process of sensory adaptation in the eyes. This reaction has since been ...

Notes: [Auszug] MR. YAPP'S communication on this subject1 is of considerable interest because it suggests that temperature may be a more suitable stimulus than pH for making a quantitative investigation of klino-kinesis in Paramecium.
