Notizen: Abstract In a soil and plant survey, and in field and greenhouse experiments the nutritional status of wheat plants was evaluated for Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu in Central Anatolia, a semi-arid region and the major wheat growing area of Turkey. All 76 soils sampled in Central Anatolia were highly alkaline with an average pH of 7. 9. More than 90% of soils contained less than 0.5 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Zn, which is widely considered to be the critical deficiency concentration of Zn for plants grown on calcareous soils. About 25% of soils contained less than 2.5 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Fe which is considered to be the critical deficiency concentration of Fe for plants. The concentrations of DTPA-extractable Mn and Cu were in the sufficiency range. Also the Zn concentrations in leaves were very low. More than 80% of the 136 leaf samples contained less than 10 mg Zn kg−1. By contrast, concentrations of Fe, Mn and Cu in leaves were in the sufficient range. In the field experiments at six locations, application of 23 kg Zn ha-1 increased grain yield in all locations. Relative increases in grain yield resulting from Zn application ranged between 5% to 554% with a mean of 43%. Significant increases in grain yield (more than 31%) as a result of Zn application were found for the locations where soils contained less than 0.15 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Zn. In pot experirnents with two bread (Triticum aestivum, cvs. Gerek-79 and Kirac-66) and two durum wheats (Triticum durum, cvs. Kiziltan-91 and Kunduru-1149), an application of 10 mg Zn kg-1 soil enhanced shoot dry matter production by about 3.5-fold in soils containing 0.11 mg kg-1 and 0.15 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Zn. Results from both field observations and greenhouse experiments showed that durum wheats were more susceptible to Zn deficiency than the bread wheats. On Zn deficient soils, durum wheats as compared to bread wheats developed deficiency symptoms in shoots earlier and to a greater extent, and had lower Zn concentration in shoot tissue and lower Zn content per shoot than the bread wheats. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that (i) Zn deficiency is a critical nutritional problem in Central Anatolia substantially limiting wheat production, (ii) durum wheats possess higher sensitivity to Zn deficient conditions than bread wheats, and (iii) wheat plants grown in calcareous soils containing less than 0.2 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Zn significantly respond to soil Zn applications. The results also indicate that low levels of Zn in soils and plant materials (i.e. grains) could be a major contributing factor for widespread occurrence of Zn deficiency in children in Turkey, whose diets are dominated by cereal-based foods.

Beschreibung: This paper presents a quantitative assessment of high-latitude energy input and its partitioning in the polar cap by synthesizing various space and ground based observations during the 17 January 2005 geomagnetic storm. It was found that Joule heating is the primary form of magnetospheric energy input, especially during active times when the hemispheric integrated Joule heating can be an order of magnitude larger than the hemispheric integrated auroral power. Most of magnetospheric energy is dissipated in the auroral zone rather than in the polar cap. On average, only about 22 ~ 25% of the total hemispheric energy input is dissipated into the polar cap region bordered by the convection reversal boundary (CRB) and the poleward auroral flux boundary (FXB). The impact of high-latitude energy input was also investigated to unveil the causal relationship between Joule heating and the formation of polar-cap mass density anomalies. Our numerical simulation demonstrated that thermosphere dynamics readily redistributes composition, temperature, and mass through upwelling and atmospheric gravity waves. The polar-cap mass density anomalies observed by the CHAMP satellite during the storm were largely a result of large-scale atmospheric gravity waves. Therefore an increase in local thermospheric mass density does not necessarily mean there is direct energy input.

Beschreibung: [1]  Recently, efforts have been undertaken to develop a coupled thermosphere-ionosphere-plasmasphere model based on two well-established models, namely, the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere General Circulation Model (TIMEGCM) developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the SAMI3 ionosphere model developed at the Naval Research Laboratory. This paper presents the first results from the coupled model on the investigation of a prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) event that took place on 9 November 2004. The coupled model eliminates two major upper boundary limitations of the stand-alone TIMEGCM, e.g., the upper boundary height and the prescribed O + fluxes at the upper boundary. It is found that the F -layer peak height is raised above 800 km in response to the large PPEF. The O + fluxes in the top ionosphere vary drastically during the course of the PPEF, with strong upward and downward fluxes with a magnitude greater than 10 9  cm -2  s -1 in localized regions. For the first time, the coupled model allows us to simulate and visualize the super-fountain effect on a global scale. Future model development is also envisaged, including the implementation of a more realistic magnetic field model and a fully two-way coupling between neutrals and ions.

Beschreibung: The fabrication of n -type diamond is essential for the realization of electronic components for extreme environments. We report on the growth of a 66  μ m thick homoepitaxial phosphorus-doped diamond on a (110)-oriented diamond substrate, grown at a very high deposition rate of 33  μ m h −1 . A pristine diamond lattice is observed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, which indicates the growth of high quality diamond. About 2.9 × 10 16  cm −3 phosphorus atoms are electrically active as substitutional donors, which is 60% of all incorporated dopant atoms. These results indicate that P-doped (110)-oriented diamond films deposited at high growth rates are promising candidates for future use in high-power electronic applications.

Beschreibung: Fish introduction and nutrient enrichment are two major environmental stressors for many freshwater lakes. Thus far, their ecological impacts have largely been evaluated independently, despite that fish invasion and predation may interact with lake trophic status. We examined paleoecological records from four large lakes of Southwest China to quantify the strength and interaction of icefish invasion and eutrophication in affecting zooplankton over time. There was a significant and positive relationship ( P 〈 0.01) between sediment Chl a concentration and bosminid flux in each lake with bosminid size structure being greater in more productive lakes, indicating a strong bottom-up control. Furthermore, a consistent decrease in bosminid body sizes after fish introduction was found in Fuxian where icefish grew most successfully among our lakes. The variance partitioning results showed a decrease in the relative importance of planktivorous predation in driving zooplankton production with increased trophic status across lakes, with their joint effect showing a unimodal model in strength. In all, there was regional heterogeneity in the population status and ecological impact of invasive icefish that varied with lake trophic status over time. Therefore, nutrient status needs to be considered in assessing long-term ecological status and consequences of fish invasion in stressed freshwaters.

Beschreibung: Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based polymers are attractive for applications for artificial muscles, high energy density storage devices etc. Recently these polymers have been found great potential for being used as actuators for refreshable full-page Braille displays for visually impaired people in terms of light weight, miniaturized size, and larger displacement, compared with currently used lead zirconate titanate ceramic actuators. The applied voltages of published polymer actuators, however, cannot be reduced to meet the requirements of using city power. Here, we report the polymer actuator generating quite large displacement and blocking force at a voltage close to the city power. Our embodiments also show good self-healing performance and disuse of lead-containing material, which makes the Braille device safer, more reliable and more environment-friendly. Beschreibung: Mutations in PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1), a mitochondrial Ser/Thr kinase, cause an autosomal recessive form of Parkinson's disease (PD), PARK6. To investigate the mechanism of PINK1 pathogenesis, we used the Drosophila Pink1 knockout (KO) model. In mitochondria isolated from Pink1-KO flies, mitochondrial respiration driven by the electron transport chain (ETC) is significantly reduced. This reduction is the result of a decrease in ETC complex I and IV enzymatic activity. As a consequence, Pink1-KO flies also display a reduced mitochondrial ATP synthesis. Because mitochondrial dynamics is important for mitochondrial function and Pink1-KO flies have defects in mitochondrial fission, we explored whether fission machinery deficits underlie the bioenergetic defect in Pink1-KO flies. We found that the bioenergetic defects in the Pink1-KO can be ameliorated by expression of Drp1, a key molecule in mitochondrial fission. Further investigation of the ETC complex integrity in wild type, Pink1-KO, PInk1-KO/Drp1 transgenic, or Drp1 transgenic flies indicates that the reduced ETC complex activity is likely derived from a defect in the ETC complex assembly, which can be partially rescued by increasing mitochondrial fission. Taken together, these results suggest a unique pathogenic mechanism of PINK1 PD: The loss of PINK1 impairs mitochondrial fission, which causes defective assembly of the ETC complexes, leading to abnormal bioenergetics.
