    Notes: The metastability of the electronic properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films deposited at high rates by the rf glow discharge decomposition of mixtures containing 40% silane in helium is compared with that of device quality a-Si:H material deposited at 250 °C under standard low deposition rate conditions. The density of states above the Fermi level of the films obtained under helium dilution decreases for deposition temperatures increasing from 250 to 350 °C, both after annealing and after light soaking. At 350 °C, the density of states becomes comparable in both states to that of device quality low deposition rate a-Si:H. We observe a correlation between these results and the degradation of the photoconductivity and the below-Fermi-level defect density measured in situ during light soaking. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of a stoichiometric Pr2NiO4 single crystal have been examined by means of the temperature dependence of the complex ac susceptibility and the isothermal magnetization in fields up to 200 kOe at T=4.2 K. Three separate phases have been identified and their anisotropic character has been analyzed. A collinear antiferromagnetic phase appears first between TN = 325 K and Tc1 = 115 K, where the Pr ions are polarized by an internal magnetic field. At Tc1 a first modification of the magnetic structure occurs in parallel with a structural phase transition (Bmab to P42/ncm). This magnetic transition has a first-order character and involves both the out-of-plane and the in-plane spin components (magnetic modes gx and gxcyfz, respectively). A second magnetic transition having also a first-order character is also clearly identified at Tc2 = 90 K which corresponds to a spin reorientation process (gxcyfz to cxgyaz magnetic modes). It should be noted as well that the out-of-phase component of χac shows a peak around 30 K which reflects the coexistence of both magnetic configurations in a wide temperature interval. Finally, two field-induced transitions have been observed at 4.2 K when the field is directed along the c axis. We propose that the high-field anomaly arises from a metamagnetic transition of the weak ferromagnetic component, similarly to La2CuO4.

    Notes: The more general hydrodynamic equations (including viscosity, heat conduction and diffusion effects) for a reactive system, in which the isomerization reaction A+A(arrow-right-and-left)B+B occurs, are used to find the influence of the reaction upon the sound velocity in the extreme cases of fast and slow reactions. A Monte Carlo simulation, based on the Boltzmann equation, has been carried out in order to verify the theoretical expressions of the sound velocity.

    Notes: The optical properties of Ni2+ doped Rb1−xCsxCaF3 and RbCa1−xCdxF3 solid solutions were studied. The 1T2g(1D)→3A2g(3F) and 1T2g(1D)→3T2g(3F) emission bands and the lifetime of the 1T2g level were measured as a function of the crystal composition. Both the band positions and the lifetime show a monotonic change with x between the values corresponding to the pure crystals. In Rb1−xCsxCaF3 crystals the contributions of different Ni2+ centers in the emission bands were resolved. The shift of emissions is due to the Rb+–Cs+ substitution as next nearest neighbors of Ni2+ ions as well as to a change of the lattice parameter with the composition of solid solutions. Both contributions were separated for some of the Ni2+ centers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A sensitive and quick method was developed to determine the presence of α-amylase in the gut of aquatic organisms, as well as its sensitivity to inhibitors. The assay is based on the utilization of Petri dishes filled with starch–agarose gel as a substrate for the enzyme solution, which is placed in small wells punched in the surface. Circular zones produced by the action of amylase remain colourless after staining with lugol. Pure commercial porcine amylase was used to fit the better conditions for developing the assay (1 g L–1 starch in the gels, 4 h of incubation). The diameter of the cleared zones were related to the activity of enzyme and the method detected linearly amylase activity in a range of 2–20 U well–1, so it was used to reveal the presence of amylase in digestive extracts obtained from different sparid fish. The method was also used to evaluate the effect produced by a specific inhibitor on fish amylases, showing a linear response when the ratio inhibitor:enzyme (in units) changed from 20:1 to 2:1. Comparison of the cleared zones produced by amylases of sparid fish in the presence or absence of inhibitor, revealed differences in their sensitivity to inhibition, which ranged from 15 to 50% of total activity. The assay is proposed for a preliminary evaluation of possible inhibitors contained in feedstuffs used in fish feeding.

    Notes: The effect of low (10°C) and high (30°C) temperature on in vivo oleate desaturation has been studied in developing sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds under conditions of different oxygen availability (capitulum, detached achenes or peeled seeds). In seeds remaining in the capitulum, only a part of the oleate newly synthesized at high temperature was desaturated to linoleate, whereas more oleate than that synthesized de novo was desaturated at low temperature. Achenes were only able to significantly desaturate oleate at low temperatures. In contrast, oleate desaturation was detected in peeled seeds incubated at low and high temperatures, showing the highest rate at 20°C. Hull removing dramatically increased the activity of the microsomal oleate desaturase (FAD2, EC 1.3.1.35) at all studied temperatures, although a long-term inactivation of the enzyme was observed at high temperatures. Low oxygen concentration (1–2%) obtained by respiration of peeled seeds incubated in sealed vials, brought about the inactivation of the enzyme. All these data suggest that temperature regulates oleate desaturation controlling the amount of oleate and the FAD2 activity. In addition, this enzyme seems to be also regulated by the availability of oxygen, which is affected inside the achene by its diffusion through the hull, and the competition with respiration, both factors being temperature-dependent.

    Notes: The temperature and oxygen regulation of the microsomal oleate desaturase (FAD2, EC 1.3.1.35) activity has been studied in developing sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds. In plants cultivated in growth chambers, the linoleic acid content in the seed lipids increased along the 25/15°C (day/night) cycle, except during the first hours of the warm period, where it decreased significantly. In contrast, FAD2 activity decreased notably at the beginning of the warm period, showing a small and continuous increase during the rest of the cycle. The temperature effect on the linoleic acid content and the FAD2 activity was also investigated using peeled seeds and detached achenes subjected to temperature changes. In peeled seeds, a change of temperature from 10 to 30°C brought about a significant decrease of FAD2 activity. On the contrary, when the temperature shifted from 30 to 10°C, FAD2 activity only increased slightly. Unlike peeled seeds, detached achenes showed a fast and dramatic increase or decrease in the level of FAD2 activity in response to a temperature change from 30 to 10°C, or from 10 to 30°C, respectively. The in vivo and in vitro thermal properties of the FAD2 enzyme were also studied. Optimal temperature and heat-resistance profile showed similar patterns in both conditions. All these data support the hypothesis that temperature regulates FAD2 activity by two different and independent mechanisms: a direct effect, and an indirect effect affecting oxygen availability. Furthermore, these results suggest that the low thermal stability of the enzyme is the main factor responsible for the direct temperature effect on FAD2 activity.

    Notes: Sagittal otoliths from the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of Serranus cabrilla L. were compared using shape indices (form-factor, roundness, circularity, rectangularity, ellipticity and eccentricity). Regional differences were best described by form-factor, circularity and eccentricity variables. The canonical discriminant functions were built with form-factor or rectangularity indices. The results indicated slight regional variations. The G-test was the criterion more useful to identify the otolith origin in the discriminant analysis.
