    Abstract: This volume contains 22 chapters introducing a wide range of semi-arid and geologic landscapes. Botswana, a thinly populated nation, the size of France, is a Southern African keystone country at the heart of the Kalahari, sharing some of the major sub-continental drainage basins such as the Limpopo, Zambezi, Orange, and Okavango with its neighbouring countries. The extensive Kalahari Sand surface has been sculptured by numerous past processes which have produced subtle but regional landforms consisting of extensive dunes and shorelines. Incipient rifting has created the dynamic Okavango and Makgadikgadi fan-basin systems which produces iconic wetlands with a world heritage status. Geological outcrops in particular to the east expose highly denuded basement lithologies which produces numerous inselbergs that are home to a rich archaeological heritage. The book also examines the geomorphology of mineral and water resources which sustain the economy and population and also features dedicated chapters that cover diamondiferous kimberlites, caves, pans, dams, duricrusts and wildlife.     Notes: A new low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) system has been constructed with a pulse counting position sensitive detector using channel plates and a wedge and strip anode. The detector accepts diffracted electrons over a 120° angle and the LEED pattern is recorded as a 256×256 pixel image. Individual LEED spot intensities can be measured up to a maximum linear count rate of ∼5 kHz while the dark count rate is ∼0.02 Hz, yielding a dynamic range greater than 105. Incident beam currents for LEED measurements are ∼1 pA. Diffuse LEED intensities from disordered systems can be measured using the large dynamic range of this instrument. Examples of diffuse LEED measurements are presented. The low incident beam currents also allow for LEED intensity-voltage measurements on surfaces sensitive to electron beam damage and on nonconducting surfaces.

    Notes: We describe a method for analyzing the external vibrations and intrinsic mechanical resonances affecting scanning probe microscopes by using the microscope as an accelerometer. We show that clear correlations can be established between the frequencies of mechanical vibrational modes and the frequencies of peaks in the tunnel current noise power spectrum. When this method is applied to our "beetle" type scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we find unexpected low frequency "rattling resonances" in the 500–1700 Hz range that depend on the exact lateral position of the STM, in addition to the expected mechanical resonances of the STM above 4 kHz which are in good agreement with theoretical estimates. We believe that these rattling resonances may be a general problem for scanning probe microscopes that use some type of kinetic motion for coarse positioning. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have constructed an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) for operation in the temperature range 20–300 K. The design consists of a vibration isolated sample holder mounted on a continuous flow cryostat. By rotation and linear motion of the cryostat, the sample can be positioned in front of various surface preparation and analysis instruments contained in a single vacuum chamber. A lightweight beetle-type STM head is lowered from the top onto the sample by a linear manipulator. To minimize helium convection in the cryostat, the entire vacuum system, including a liquid helium storage Dewar, can be tilted by a few degrees perpendicular to the cryostat axis, which improves the operation. The performance of the instrument is demonstrated by atomically resolved images of the Pd(111) surface and adsorbed CO molecules. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using a tip as an anode, a scanning force microscope (SFM) with an electrically conducting tip allows simultaneous measurement of both field-emitted currents and surface electronic properties with high lateral resolution. The principle of the method and its application to field emission from chemical vapor deposition diamond-like carbon films are presented. By simultaneously imaging the topography and field-emission current distribution with a 100 nm tip-surface separation, we correlated emission, topography, and dielectric properties. Subsequent contact SFM images of the same regions correlated topography and conductivity on the nanometer scale. The electrostatic force between tip and surface showed fluctuations on a millisecond time scale during field emission. This is probably due to charging and discharging of deep traps in the diamond-like carbon film. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
