    Description: The addition of offshore wind farms (OWFs) to stratified regions of shelf seas poses an anthropogenic source of turbulence, in which the foundation structures remove power from the oceanic flow that is fed into turbulent mixing in the wake downstream. The loss of stratification within the wake of a single OWF structure is observed for the first time by means of field observations, which enable a qualitative characterization of the disturbed flow downstream. These results are complemented with high‐resolution large eddy simulations of four different stratification strengths that allow for a quantification of turbulence and mixing quantities in the wake of a foundation structure. The turbulent wake of a structure is narrow and highly energetic within the first 100 m, with the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy well above background levels downstream of the structure. A single monopile is responsible for 7–10% additional mixing to that of the bottom mixed layer, whereby ∼10% of the turbulent kinetic energy generated by the structure is used in mixing. Although the effect of a single turbine on stratification is relatively low, large‐scale OWFs could significantly affect the vertical structure of a weakly stratified water column. Further, rough estimates show that the rate of formation of stratification in the study area is of the same order of magnitude as the additional mixing promoted by the structures, thus OWFs could modify the stratification regime and water column dynamics on a seasonal scale, depending on local conditions and farm geometries.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Advances in the renewable energy sector have enabled the construction and operation of wind farms in bodies of water deep enough to present vertical temperature differences across the water column or thermal stratification. In coastal regions dominated by tidal motion, the presence of offshore wind farm (OWF) structures brings about additional turbulence and mixing of stratification. The present study combines field measurements and numerical simulations to characterize the wake of single OWF structures and quantify the amount of turbulence and mixing generated by them. Our results suggest that the effect of OWF structures is small compared to other naturally occurring mixing mechanisms, however can be comparable to the rate of stratification buildup. Stratification in certain regions of shelf seas could be impacted by OWFs if these are built over a large area.

Construction of consensus trees shows their data to be relatively uninformative on relationships of these vespine species. Their suggestion thatDolichovespula is not monophyletic cannot be upheld.

    Notes: Summary An approximately steady-state reduction of specific airway conductance was induced in healthy human subjects by means of an individualized inhaled methacholine loading dose followed by a maintenance dose regime. Tested against this background bronchoconstriction, the xanthine analogue SDZ MKS 492, when administered as a single oral dose of 40 mg, showed a significant bronchodilator action, which lasted for up to 5.5 h. Bronchodilatation was not seen after administration of 10 or 20 mg doses. SDZ MKS 492 inhaled as a dry powder had a bronchodilator action that was small, most evident with the 12 mg dose and transient. The peak relief of imposed bronchoconstriction was 29% and the apparent half-time of removal of SDZ MKS 492 from its site of action was 5–6 min. Inhaled SDZ 492 had a bitter taste that was not masked by inclusion of menthol and aspartame in the formulation. The bronchodilatation seen in laboratory animals can also be produced by SDZ MKS 492 in man when administered orally or by inhalation. Its magnitude correlates better with the plasma concentration of parent drug than with that of either of the identified metabolites. Dispositional processes in the lung abbreviate its action after administration by inhalation.

    Notes: The method of determining corrections to neutron time-of-flight diffraction data by Monte Carlo techniques is costly since a large range of neutron wavelengths must be considered. An optimized simulation is presented in which many wavelengths are considered simultaneously, while paths are traced only once for all wavelengths. Collision positions and scattering angles are selected from cumulative distribution functions representing all neutron wavelengths simulated. The scattered intensity is computed by weighting the simulated paths to account for the probability of their occurrence for each wavelength. The results of a calculation for a vanadium slab are given as an example.

    Notes: A Monte Carlo computer simulation of a neutron diffraction experiment is presented which is of particular use for systems where the structure factor modulates considerably. The program has been optimized by forcing successive scattering events to occur within the specimen under study, and by calculating the score into the detector at each scattering point to allow each simulated path to contribute to the detected scattered intensity. A method of determining the multiple scattering correction for time-of-flight diffraction is shown, and the results of such an analysis are presented for a specimen with intense forward angle scattering and strongly varying S(Q).

    Notes: Ingredients used in comminuted meat products were divided into four classes: Class I–striated, skeletal muscle meats; Class II – striated, nonskeletal muscle meat; Class III – organ and smooth muscle meats; and Class IV – nonmeat proteins. Within this classification scheme, bind value constants developed by different workers were subjected to regression anaylsis using protein or moisture as the independent variable. Linear or multiple regression equations with high correlation coefficients were obtained for Class I and Class III meats indicating reliable predictive value of moisture or protein content. These equations should prove useful for esimating bind value constants for meat ingredients in these classes for which such constants have not been established by experimental procedures.

    Notes: Hams and bellies from 4 control carcasses and 12 conditioned carcasses were evaluated to determine the physical, chemical and sensory characteristics of pre- and post-chill processed hams and bellies. Processing yields, chemical analyses and sensory characteristics of the hams were not significantly affected by processing treatment. Final yields for the control, post-chill bellies were higher (P 〈 0.05) than those for pre-chill bellies. Except for differences in crispness, no differences in sensory attributes were noted for cooked bacon strips. Overall, hams and bellies from conditioned carcasses were comparable to cold processed hams and bellies in each variable evaluated in the study.
