Abstract: This book investigates the historical evolution, regional differences, and quantitative measurement on street interface, which forms the street space and plays a very important role in urban form. Empirical research reveals the street interface in Chinese cities are much more complicated than European and American cities. This book explores the reason and reveals the relationship between street interface and urban form in morphology. By constructing quantitative measurement method on street interface morphology, quantitative parameters can be used in urban planning guidelines in China. Both researchers and students working in architecture, urban design, urban planning and urban studies can benefit from this book.

Notes: The structural stability and electronic properties of a (Sb2)2/(GaSb)2(111) semimetal–semiconductor superlattice are investigated by a first-principles all-electron linearized augmented plane-wave method within the local spin density functional approximation. When bulk values are used the two interfacial distances D1 and D2 are energetically unfavorable. The fully optimized structure shows that the bond lengths of Sb–Ga and Sb–Sb at interfaces are 1.3% and 2.8% longer than their bulk values, respectively. Further electronic band calculations of the stable (Sb2)2/(GaSb)2(111) superlattice show that the system has semimetallic behavior. A p-like interface band is observed below the Fermi level. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The yttrium–sialon ceramics with the composition of Y0.333Si10Al2ON15 and an excess addition of Y2O3 (2 or 5 wt%) were fabricated by hot isostatic press (HIP) sintering at 1800°C for 1 h. The resulting materials were subsequently heat-treated in the temperature range 1300–1900°C to investigate its effect on the α→β-sialon phase transformation, the morphology of α-sialon grains, and mechanical properties. The results show that α-sialons stabilized by yttrium have high thermal stability. An adjustment of the α-sialon phase composition is the dominating reaction in the investigated Y–α-sialon ceramics during low-temperature annealing. Incorporation of excess Y2O3 could effectively promote the formation of elongated α-sialon grains during post-heat-treating at relatively higher temperature (1700° and 1900°C) and hence resulted in a high fracture toughness (KIC= 6.3 MPa·m1/2) via grain debonding and pullout effects. Although the addition of 5 wt% Y2O3 could promote the growth of elongated α grains with a higher aspect ratio, the higher liquid-phase content increased the interfacial bonding strength and therefore hindered interface debonding and crack deflection. The heat treatment at 1500°C significantly changed the morphology of α-sialon grains from elongated to equiaxed and hence decreased its toughness.

Notes: Barium aluminosilicate (BAS) glass-ceramic composites reinforced with various volume percents (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 vol%) of SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot pressing. The microstructure, the whisker/matrix interface structure, the phase constitution, and the mechanical properties of the composites were systematically studied by means of SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques as well as by indentation crack microfracture and single-edge-notched-beam bend testing. It was demonstrated that the incorporation of SiC whiskers could significantly increase the flexural strength and fracture toughness of BAS glass-ceramic matrices. The addition of active Al2O3 to the BAS matrix reduced the amount of SiO2 in the matrix, forming needlelike mullite, which further improved the mechanical properties.

Notes: The 4992-bp replicon of a large cryptic plasmid in the gram-positive bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. cynodontis was identified and sequenced. The replicon encoded two proteins essential for plasmid replication and stability. The putative replication protein (RepA) is homologous to that of the plasmids in mycobacterial pLR7 family, while the putative ParA protein immediately downstream of RepA is significantly homologous to the Walker-type ATPase required for partition of plasmid and chromosome of the gram-positive bacteria. These two proteins and other ORFs are clustered with the putative promoters and other regulatory sequences, illustrating an efficient organization of the replicon for this novel plasmid.

Notes: Drawing from flexible production literature on industrial networks, this research pays particular attention to the socially embedded nature of firm linkages in a distribution sector. The empirical study of Chinese-owned computer wholesale firms within Los Angeles County shows that the presence of ethnic identity plays a significant role in the internal operation and external transactions of Chinese firms. Ethnic relations facilitate interactions within the ethnic group, producing a closely knit ethnic network within the industry. The heavy reliance on ethnic networks also has led Chinese firms to a notable geographical separation from the remaining firms in the same sector.

Notes: Purpose - To contribute to the development of a theoretically grounded measure of organizational internet use (OIU) by conceptualizing and operationalizing it as a theoretical construct, and by empirically assessing its reliability and validity Design/methodology/approach - The focal construct OIU was conceptualized as an abstract collective object with three components, forming an index with formative, causal indicators. A multi-method research design - including a cross-sectional drop-and-collect survey among small technology-based firms (STBFs) in Germany and an observational study of web sites - was applied to assess empirically the theoretically developed construct OIU. This was achieved by using the component-based partial least squares (PLS) structural modeling technique using PLS-Graph. Findings - The empirical assessment of the scale, applied to the international business domain, proved to be reliable and valid in the structural model and across assessment methods. Research limitations/implications - The focal construct was assessed among a very specific population. This limits the claims that can be made with regard to applying it in other industries, countries, and firms. Future research should address this by applying OIU in maximally different research contexts. Practical implications - The developed construct has important implications for both managers and researchers. It should help in assessing levels of organizational internet use in a consistent fashion across populations and studies. It can be used for benchmarking purposes - of specific interest to managers - and it can be used to explore antecedents and consequences of organizational internet use - of specific interest to researchers. Originality/value - Internet research is moving from anecdotal and exuberant internet euphoria to internet pessimism to internet realism. Only theoretically grounded, reliable and valid measures can support such a required transition. With this paper we have made an initial contribution for such a development to occur.
