Abstract The percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal pteridophytes among 256 pteridophyte species distributed in Yunnan (southwest China) was found to be lower than that in angiosperms. In the pteridophytes, the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizas was low in sporophytes of fern-allies and leptosporangiates, whereas in the eusporangiates it was relatively high. From the standpoint of mycotrophism, the evolutionary trend in the Filicineae may be from constantly mycorrhizal to facultative mycorrhizal and finally to nonmycorrhizal plants.
