Abstract: This book focuses on the robustness analysis of high accuracy surface modeling method (HASM) to yield good performance of it. Understanding the sensitivity and uncertainty is important in model applications. The book aims to advance an integral framework for assessing model error that can demonstrate robustness across sets of possible controls, variable definitions, standard error, algorithm structure, and functional forms. It is an essential reference to the most promising numerical models. In areas where there is less certainty about models, but also high expectations of transparency, robustness analysis should aspire to be as broad as possible. This book also contains a chapter at the end featuring applications in climate simulation illustrating different implementations of HASM in surface modeling. The book is helpful for people involved in geographical information science, ecological informatics, geography, earth observation, and planetary surface modeling.

Notes: The sol-gel derived bioactive glass short fibers in the system CaO-P2O5-SiO2 was preparedusing air-spray method. SBF immersion test indicated that the fibers possessed satisfactory bioactivity.SEM, XRD, FTIR analysis revealed that the morphologies and bioactivity of the fibers could besignificantly influenced by the composition and viscosity of the solution. The fibers are very promisingbiomaterials for applications to bone restoration and tissue engineering as the bone defects fillers oradditives for strengthening of the biomedical polymers

Notes: Bioglass (BG) particles were treated by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in order toimprove the interface compatibility with polymer materials. The surface structures of modified BG werecharacterized through Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance accessory, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry analysis and X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy. The results showed that APTES was successfully grafted on the surface of BG. The biomineralizationproperties of APTES modified bioglass were also studied through FTIR, XRD and SEM.Results showed that hydroxylcarbonateapatite (HCA) was formed on the surface of modified BG aftersoaked into SBF solution. It was shown that the APTES modified BG could possess good mineralizationproperties and could be intended as a composition of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications

Notes: A porous bioglass reinforced tricalcium phosphate scaffold was prepared. The microstructure, degradability and reaction products of the scaffold after immersed in a simulated body fluid for different days were emphatically investigated using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and induced coupled plasma spectroscopy. The results showed that a homogeneous hydroxy-carbonate-apatite (HCA) layer forms on the surface of the scaffold for over 30- day immersion and the oriented growth of the HCA occurs. In addition, this paper discussed the competing mechanism between the dissolution and the precipitation via the measurement of calcium and silicon ionic concentrations in the SBF

Notes: The biomaterials in system CaO-P2O5-SiO2 were synthesized via sol-gel method. The biomaterials can be applied to bone reparation and bone tissue engineering scaffolds The nano-pore structure, degradability, bioactivity and bio-mineralization characteristic of the biomaterials were investigated in details using XRD, SEM/EDX, FTIR, BET and DSC/TG techniques. It was indicated that the sol-gel derived biomaterials have a higher bioactivity than that of the melt derived bioactive glasses or glass-ceramics. It just takes 4-8 hours for HCA to form on the surface of the sol-gel samples in SBF solution at 37°C. The spherical HCA crystal clusters formed on the surface of the sol-gel derived samples immersed in SBF for 8 hours have a low crystallinity. Owing to their interconnected nano-sized pores, the sol-gel samples possess much higher surface areas and the hydrous porous SiO2 gel layer containing a great amount of ºSi-OH groups can be rapidly formed on the biomterials’ surface through a quick ion exchange between H3O+ in the solution and Ca2+ in the surface of the materials. ºSi-OH groups can play a very important role in inducing formation of HCA. They make the material surfaces electronegative, which resulted in a double electrode layer formed between the samples surface and SBF solution. The double electrode layer is in favor of formation of HCA on the surface of the materials

Notes: Investigation of γ -channel widening behavior in a nickel-base single crystal superalloy during uniaxial tensile creep tests was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was adopted to reveal the microstructural evolution of γ -channel and the dimension of γ -channel. It was found that different tests condition such as temperature, time and stress in tensile creep tests all influenced the γ -channel widening behavior, and a parabolic rate law governs the mean increase value of γ -channel width. The stress and temperature enhanced the γ -channel widening. The γ -channel widening was the result of directionally diffusion of multiatom

Notes: For practical applications such as artifical joints and dental implants, there is a strongdemand for hydroxyapatite coatings with excellent performances to ensure long-term fixation. In the present study, functionally gradient HA-ZrO2-Bioglass coatings were prepared using net-energy controlled plasma spraying technology. The structural characteristics andmechanical performances of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nanoindentation. The results showed that: (1) Pore sizes and compositions of the coatings changed gradually along the vertical substrate, crystal HA with few calcium phosphates was presented in the heat-treated coatings. (2) Surface of the coating was very rough with nano-sized crystalline grains and micropores; (3) Young’s modulus and hardness changed gradually at the range of coating-Ti6Alo4V interface. Compared with HA coatings, the tensile adhesive strength of the functionally graded HA-ZrO2-Bioglass coatings reached 38.6 MPa, much higher than that of single HA coatings

Notes: The precipitation behavior during ageing treatment of a single crystal nickel-base superalloy was investigated by SEM and TEM. The results showed that tetragonal needle-like σ phase and blocky -W phase precipitated during low temperature ageing treatment after this testing alloy was completely solution heat treated. σ and -W phases robbed of solid solution strengthening alloying element W、Mo in the matrix and degraded high temperature creep rupture property severely. The creep curve of the crystal tested at 1010 ℃ and 248 MPa exhibited that the steady state creep rate ε was as high as 9.46 × 10-3/h. The creep-rupture life was only 25 hours. -W phase was not formed by decrease of W content properly. A relatively low level of Co could inhibit σ phase precipitation and improve microstructural stability

Notes: The bioactive nanoparticles in the system CaO-P2O5-SiO2 were synthesized viamicroemulsions method in this study. The structure and properties of the nanoparticles were investigated in details using XRD, TEM, FTIR, BET techniques. It was found that, in a stable phase W/O emulsions, the diameter of the nanoparticles were related to the molar ratio of water to surfactant (γ). Under the favorable conditions, i.e. γ=6, nano-sized spherical amorphous particles could be obtained with the average diameter of 25 nm. The microemulsions could be an alternative method to prepare bioactive nanoparticles for bone reparation and bone tissue engineering scaffolds

Notes: The HA nanobelts had been synthesized by using surfactants. It possesses a uniform one-dimensional nanofibers with width in 1.37nm and a BET specific surface area of 85.2m2g-1. The 31P NMR spectrum showed three –0.59ppm,-1.76ppm,-3.22ppm followed by a series of identical sidebands and one weak peak at –4.69ppm . The FTIR spectra of the nanobelts included two types of vibration; three PO4 3- stretching modes at 939.1,1030.4 and 1100.0cm-1 band were attributed to the ν1(PO4), ν3(PO4), ν3(PO4) modes respectively. Two PO4 3- bending modes at 569.6 and 608.7cm-1 bands were attributed to the ν4(PO4) modes .Thebands observed around 473.9cm-1 were attributed toν2(PO4) modes. The nanobelts were novel drug carries
