    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Summary〈/div〉An indirect boundary integral equation method (IBIEM) is proposed to investigate the scattering and diffraction of the qP-, qSV- and SH-waves by a three-dimensional (3-D) canyon embedded in a multi-layered transversely isotropic (TI) half-space. First, by employing the Fourier expansion in the circumferential direction and Hankel transform in the radial direction in a cylindrical coordinate system, the 3-D dynamic Green's functions for concentrated loads are derived semi-analytically. The scattered fields, which arise from the presence of the canyon irregularity, are constructed by applying a set of fictitious concentrated loads on the auxiliary surface and calculating the Green's functions. The forces are applied on the auxiliary surface instead of on the real canyon boundary to avoid singularity. Then, the direct stiffness method is adopted to solve the dynamic responses of the displacements and stresses due to the body waves incident from the underlying TI half-space (free fields). Finally, the boundary condition is introduced to determine the densities of the concentrated loads in a least-squares manner. And the total dynamic responses are acquired by adding the free fields to the scattered fields. The numerical stability of the method is examined, and the validity of the proposed formulations is achieved by comparing its results with the existing numerical solutions. By taking a semi-spherical canyon cut in a homogeneous TI half-space, in a single TI layered half-space and in a three layered TI half-space as examples, numerical calculations are performed in the frequency domain. And the effects of material anisotropy, type of incident wave, incident angle, frequency of excitation and sedimentary sequence of the TI layers on the displacement amplitudes are studied. Numerical results illustrate that the dynamic responses for the TI medium can be significantly different from those for the isotropic case, and the amplification spectral is strongly dependent on the type of incident wave, incident angle, frequency of excitation and location of the observation points. The variation of the TI parameters alters the resonant frequencies of the layer and further alters the dynamic interaction between the layer and the canyon. The sedimentary sequence of the layers is crucial for accurate assessment of the surface ground motion around the canyon.〈/span〉

    Description: Jasmonate (JA) and ethylene (ET) are two major plant hormones that synergistically regulate plant development and tolerance to necrotrophic fungi. Both JA and ET induce the expression of several pathogenesis-related genes, while blocking either signaling pathway abolishes the induction of these genes by JA and ET alone or in combination. However, the molecular basis of JA/ET coaction and signaling interdependency is largely unknown. Here, we report that two Arabidopsis ET-stabilized transcription factors (EIN3 and EIL1) integrate ET and JA signaling in the regulation of gene expression, root development, and necrotrophic pathogen defense. Further studies reveal that JA enhances the transcriptional activity of EIN3/EIL1 by removal of JA-Zim domain (JAZ) proteins, which physically interact with and repress EIN3/EIL1. In addition, we find that JAZ proteins recruit an RPD3-type histone deacetylase (HDA6) as a corepressor that modulates histone acetylation, represses EIN3/EIL1-dependent transcription, and inhibits JA signaling. Our studies identify EIN3/EIL1 as a key integration node whose activation requires both JA and ET signaling, and illustrate transcriptional derepression as a common mechanism to integrate diverse signaling pathways in the regulation of plant development and defense.

    Description: High-resolution speleothem records from China have provided insights into the factors that control the strength of the East Asian monsoon. Our understanding of these factors remains incomplete, however, owing to gaps in the record of monsoon history over the past two interglacial-glacial cycles. In particular, missing sections have hampered our ability to test ideas about orbital-scale controls on the monsoon, the causes of millennial-scale events and relationships between changes in the monsoon and climate in other regions. Here we present an absolute-dated oxygen isotope record from Sanbao cave, central China, that completes a Chinese-cave-based record of the strength of the East Asian monsoon that covers the past 224,000 years. The record is dominated by 23,000-year-long cycles that are synchronous within dating errors with summer insolation at 65 degrees N (ref. 10), supporting the idea that tropical/subtropical monsoons respond dominantly and directly to changes in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation on orbital timescales. The cycles are punctuated by millennial-scale strong-summer-monsoon events (Chinese interstadials), and the new record allows us to identify the complete series of these events over the past two interglacial-glacial cycles. Their duration decreases and their frequency increases during glacial build-up in both the last and penultimate glacial periods, indicating that ice sheet size affects their character and pacing.     Description: Aberrant signaling through the class I phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt axis is frequent in human cancer. Here, we show that Beclin 1, an essential autophagy and tumor suppressor protein, is a target of the protein kinase Akt. Expression of a Beclin 1 mutant resistant to Akt-mediated phosphorylation increased autophagy, reduced anchorage-independent growth, and inhibited Akt-driven tumorigenesis. Akt-mediated phosphorylation of Beclin 1 enhanced its interactions with 14-3-3 and vimentin intermediate filament proteins, and vimentin depletion increased autophagy and inhibited Akt-driven transformation. Thus, Akt-mediated phosphorylation of Beclin 1 functions in autophagy inhibition, oncogenesis, and the formation of an autophagy-inhibitory Beclin 1/14-3-3/vimentin intermediate filament complex.     Description: A 5-year-resolution absolute-dated oxygen isotope record from Dongge Cave, southern China, provides a continuous history of the Asian monsoon over the past 9000 years. Although the record broadly follows summer insolation, it is punctuated by eight weak monsoon events lasting approximately 1 to 5 centuries. One correlates with the "8200-year" event, another with the collapse of the Chinese Neolithic culture, and most with North Atlantic ice-rafting events.     Description: Thorium-230 ages and oxygen isotope ratios of stalagmites from Dongge Cave, China, characterize the Asian Monsoon and low-latitude precipitation over the past 160,000 years. Numerous abrupt changes in 18O/16O values result from changes in tropical and subtropical precipitation driven by insolation and millennial-scale circulation shifts. The Last Interglacial Monsoon lasted 9.7 +/- 1.1 thousand years, beginning with an abrupt (less than 200 years) drop in 18O/16O values 129.3 +/- 0.9 thousand years ago and ending with an abrupt (less than 300 years) rise in 18O/16O values 119.6 +/- 0.6 thousand years ago.
