Notes: Abstract An efficient numerical method has been devised for the study of wave circulating by a magnetised ferrite body of an arbitrary shape. It is a finite-difference time-domain formulation that incorporates Mur's absorbing boundary conditions and a perfectly matched layer. Several shapes of interest have been studied, including spheres, circular cylinders. The electromagnetic fields inside ferrite and the power-density distribution on the ferrite's surface normal to the bias external magnetic field are obtained. It is observed that an incident plane wave would circulate around the magnetised ferrite body in an open space as if the ferrite were placed inside a waveguide junction circulator.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a novel numerical technique to solve electromagnetic boundary value problem is described. This finite element based method of lines is developed by combining finite element method and the method of lines, so that it not only has high flexibility to treat geometrically and compositionally complex problems but also maintains high accuracy of semi-analytical technique. The geometry discretization, element mapping, element trial function and standard ordinary differential equation construction are discussed in details. Our numerical result demonstrates that this method can successfully solve the complex problems with fewer mesh lines when compared with conventional method of lines.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an approximate but efficient field treatment of the new easy-to-fabricate ferrite sphere based H-plane waveguide circulator for potentially low-cost millimeter wave communication systems. A new three-dimension modeling strategy using a self-inconsistent mixed coordinates based mode matching technique is developed, i.e. the solutions of the Helmholz wave equations in the ferrite sphere and in the surrounding areas are deduced in the form of infinite summation of spherical, cylindrical and general Cartesian modes respectively. The point matching method is then used on the interface to numerically obtain the coefficients of different orders basis functions of the field. Therefore, the field distributions as well as the characteristics of the circulator are numerically calculated and the good agreement is observed between the numerical results and the measured data.

Notes: Abstract The scattering field of a ferrite post and a cylindrical ferrite post containing conducting post illuminated by a plane wave is analyzed. The special interest is the scattering property of the ferrite posts, which is resonating at certain modes such as TM11 mode. We hope to know the speciality it shows and find its applications. It is found that the scattering field pattern of a resonating ferrite post is similar to the rotation of the scattering field pattern of a dielectric cylindrical post, which has the same dimension as ferrite. The scattering properties of the ferrite may give us some inspirations to explore its applications in microwave components. This property is utilized to explain the mechanism of the operation of the circulators. It also may be used in microstrip patch antenna, coupler and filter to control their properties. Other applications may be possible too. Some calculation results are presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, symmetric successive overrelaxation (SSOR) preconditioned CG technique are introduced into method of lines (MOL) to further enhance the computational efficiency of this semi-analytic method. Millimeter wave scattering by an infinite plane metallic grating is used as the examples to describe its implementation, whose analysis usually needs fast algorithms because of electrically large dimension. For arbitrary incident wave, Helmholz equation and boundary condition are used to calculate the impedance matrix and then to obtain reduced current-voltage linear matrix equation in spatial domain. An effective symmetric successive overrelaxation preconditioned conjugate gradient iterative method, SSOR-PCG, is chosen to solve this matrix equation. With SSOR as the preconditioner as well as its efficient implementing in CG algorithm, PCG method can converge to accurate solution in much fewer iteration steps.

Notes: Abstract The focusing property of extended hemispherical lens, on which a linearly polarized plane wave is incident normally, is simulated by FDTD method. The focusing process is presented pictorially at different moment. Focal length is obtained and compared with that computed by other method. Good agreement has been found. The coupling between the focused incident wave and a waveguide in the focal plane of the lens is also simulated. The lens is used as antenna at millimeter wavelengths.

Notes: Abstract An interesting, surprising phenomenon, spectrum transformation of Gaussian pulse propagating in waveguide, is revealed in this paper. It is found that the spectrum power of zero frequency of Gaussian pulse is changed into the spectrum power of cut-off frequency of H10 mode in rectangular waveguide when FDTD simulation is implemented in the absence of nonlinear material in waveguide. The cause of the spectrum transformation is explained based on the mode field structure at cut-off. Its effect on the correctness of analyzing waveguide discontinuity problem is presented too.

Notes: Abstract An effective wavelet based multigrid preconditioned conjugate gradient method is developed to solve electromagnetic large matrix problem for millimeter wave scattering application. By using wavelet transformation we restrict the large matrix equation to a relative smaller matrix and which can be solved rapidly. The solution is prolonged as the new improvement for the conjugate gradient (CG) method. Numerical results show that our developed wavelet based multigrid preconditioned CG method can reach large improvement of computational complexity. Due to the automaticity of wavelet transformation, this method is potential to be a block box solver without physical background.

Notes: The performances of n-tier GaAs MESFET matrix amplifiers are studied in the time domain. The model is developed incorporating the parasitic resistive loss and internal coupling capacitance of the active device. Techniques are contemplated to transform the matrix amplifier into a set of coupled multi-conductor transmission lines. The resultant model is analysed by the TLM method. Impulse responses of 2 × 4 and 3 × 3 matrix amplifiers are investigated. The frequency responses of the amplifiers are obtained through a Fourier transform. Agreement is observed between results obtained by the TLM model and those obtained by other analytical methods or a complicated circuit analysis program. A 5 × 7 matrix amplifier is also analysed to show the advantage of the developed method.

Notes: A rigorous technique for studying a thin wire circular loop antenna excited by a magnetic frill is developed. The exact kernel is derived and used to improve the accuracy. The scheme is applicable to small as well as large loops. Results obtained are nearly indistinguishable from those determined by the Fourier expansion method for non-resonant loops. A disagreement of 2 per cent is generally observed when the loop is close to reasonant for βb 〉 2. Compared with the conventional numerical method where a loop is represented by a polygon of straight wires, the present scheme is much faster and more accurate. Extension of this method to cover an antenna system of arbitrarily oriented loops intermingled with straight wires can be easily achieved.
