Notes: [Auszug] The ancient lake beds of the lower part of the Yixian Formation, Liaoning Province, northeastern China, have yielded a wide rangeof well-preserved fossils: the ‘feathered’ dinosaurs Sinosauropteryx, Protarchaeopteryx and Caudipteryx, the primitive birds Confuciusornis and ...

Notes: Summary The fine structure in some cholesteric fingerprint textures of cyanoethyl chitosan (CNCS)/acrylic acid solution and photo-solidified CNCS/polyacrylic acid composite film was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small angle light scattering (SALS) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Permanganic etching was developed to reveal the cholesteric liquid crystalline textures in the composite films. A schematic model was presented to explain this kind of fine structure. The directors within each cholesteric molecular layer did not orient in nematic-like order, but varied their orientation by an ill-defined period.

Notes: Abstract Detailed examination of China's 1982 census data confirms that the standard of age reporting among the Han Chinese, and among many of the ethnic minorities, is very good. Furthermore the quality of age reporting is unaffected by large variations in levels of literacy which exist between men and women, between young and old, and between rural and urban areas. Much of the credit for the high quality of China's age reporting stems from the distinctive nature of Chinese traditional calendars. However, in the far west of China, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, age heaping and age exaggeration are as bad as they are in many other developing countries. The authors show that the poor quality of age reporting in Xinjiang is confined to three of the region's ethnic communities, the Uygur, Kirgiz and Tajik, who appear to neither know, nor care, how old they are.

Notes: precursor solution was prepared using barium trifluoroacetae (Ba-TFA) and non-fluorineyttrium (Y) and copper (Cu) organic salts. The precursor solution was modified by benzalacetone(BzAcH), in which the Cu2+ were chelated with BzAcH, which preventing the loss of Cu in thepyrolysis process. Dense YBCO superconducting films with smooth surface, which confirmed byscanning electron microscopy (SEM), were repeatedly obtained through sol-gel process. X-raydiffraction (XRD) 2θ scanning and φ scanning indicated that the as-prepared YBCO films had goodc-axis texture. YBCO films with superconducting transition temperature (TC) above 89K wereobtained

Notes: with yttrium, barium, copper acetates as starting materials, a low-fluorine-contentsolution was prepared. YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films on LaAlO3 (LAO) single crystal substrates werefabricated by a new TFA-MOD method. Solution-derived YBCO films exhibited epitaxial growth, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The humidity of the furnace atmosphere duringannealing process influences the texture of YBCO film. Under high-humidity of furnaceatmosphere, a-oriented grains, which were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),were generated on film surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),however, indicated that although a-axis oriented grains formed on the film surface, c-axis orientedgrains occupied the area near the YBCO/LAO interface. High-performance YBCO films with Tcabove 90K, and Jc more than 106A/cm2 at 77 K and zero magnetic field were obtained

Notes: ---In addition to the known gabosines A (4), B (5) and C (6), three new gabosines L (1), N (2) and O (3) were detected by chemical screening as secondary metabolites of Streptomyces (strains GT 041230, GT 051024 and S 1096). The constitutions of 1, 2 and 3 were established by spectroscopic techniques and derivatization reactions. The absolute stereochemistry of 1 and 2 was determined by Helmchen's method and has been verified in the case of gabosine N (2) by X-ray analysis. The DNA-binding properties of the gabosines were investigated and analyzed by binding studies using a recently developed thin-layer chromatography technique (bimolecular-chemical screening).

Notes: Crosslinked polymer seed latexes of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid were synthesized with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinking agent in a first step. Three different processes of seeded emulsion polymerization were used to prepare an outlayer of polysiloxane on the above seed latex particles: (A) direct anionic polymerization of D4 (octamethyl tetracyclosiloxane) catalyzed by potassium hydroxide; (B) direct cationic polymerization of D4 onto the seed catalyzed by dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid; (C) a vinyl-containing polysiloxane prepared by copolymerization of D4 and vinyl septamethyl tetracyclosiloxane was added before the D4 cationic polymerization. Characterization by transmission electron microscopy showed that only process C provided satisfactory results. Film hardness was measured, and the latex film from process C demonstrated the lowest hardness of all the films. The mechanism of polymerization is discussed.

Notes: Emulsion copolymerization of silicones (octomethyl tetracyclosiloxane, D4 and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane, MATS) and acrylics was carried out using three different polymerization processes: semicontinuous monomer emulsion addition, batch and initiator solution addition. Results showed that only the semicontinuous process led to a stable latex with monodisperse particles. Various polymerizations were carried out through this process with varying silicone/acrylic ratios and MATS content. Films were obtained from different latexes: their properties are significantly influenced by silicone and MATS contents in copolymers.
