    Notes: The concentrations of 36 elements in geochemical reference samples issued by the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources of China were determined by neutron activation analysis. Three main variants of the technique, instrumental, epithermal, and nreirradiation separation neutron activation analysis (INAA, ENAA, PNAA), were employed in a systematic study of the samples by three laboratories: the Institute of Atomic Energy of the Academia Sinica (INAA, ENAA), the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Academia Sinica (INAA), and the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Prosnecting of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral resources (INAA,PNAA). Both long and short irradiations and both Ge(Li) and HPGe detectors were used. A supplementary software nackage for data processing was developed. About 81% of the data determined by neutron activation agreed with recomended values with in 15%.

    Notes: In order to understand the grain size and porosity dependent mechanical behavior of porous,multi-phase nanocrystalline ceramics, each phase is treated as a mixture of grain interior and grainboundary, and pores are taken as a single phase. In conjunction with the secant-modulus approach andiso-strain assumption, Budiansky’s self-consistent method is extended to build a constitutive modelfor nanocrystalline ceramics with small plastic deformation. Based on the developed model, thepredicted yield strength (σ0.2) values of porous, multi-phase nanocrystalline ceramics with differentgrain size and porosity are compared with experimental data in the literature, the comparison showsthat the predictions are in good agreement with the published data. This suggests that the developedmodel is capable of describing the grain size and porosity dependent mechanical behaviors ofnanocrystalline ceramics with small plastic deformation

    Notes: Abstract The photoconductivity and photovoltaic currents of pure LiNbO3 and proton exchanged waveguides in LiNbO3 have been measured as a function of the optical intensity up to about several kW/cm2 by the use of surface electrodes. For pure LiNbO3 the observed dependences are a simple extrapolation of the well known low intensity behaviour. The photoconductivity of proton exchanged waveguides is considerably increased compared with pure LiNbO3 and the curves are strongly nonlinear in the high intensity region. These results can explain, at least qualitatively, the previously observed characteristic time and intensity dependence of light-induced refractive index changes in this type of waveguides. Both the time and temperature behaviour of the dark conductivity of all proton exchanged waveguides give strong evidence of ionic charge transport in the proton exchanged region.

    Notes: Abstract An efficient protocol was developed for regeneration of plants from long-term cultured calluses, which originated from mature seeds of a model rice variety Taipei 309 and were maintained by subculture for at least 6 months. The calluses were precultured for 4 weeks on a medium containing 8.88 μmol 6-benzyladenine, 5.37 μmol α-naphthaleneacetic acid and various concentrations of abscisic acid, which converted the calluses to a state more responsive to the subsequent culture conditions for plant regeneration. Supplementation of 8.69 mmol proline in the preculture medium increased the growth rate of the callus masses by 50% and resulted in the regeneration of 60% more plants. A more pronounced effect was observed after raising the 6-benzyladenine concentration to 55.48 μmol in the preculture medium, which promoted the development of adventitious buds on the calluses and led to the regeneration of some 30% more plants of better quality. Results indicate that manipulation of medium supplements and growth regulators leads to efficient plant regeneration in long-term callus cultures of rice.

    Notes: Abstract 19 elements, such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Se, Cu, Zn, etc., in hair of 65 patients with chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema and cor-pulmonale diseases and 65 healthy people have been investigated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The results show that the contents of Ca and Mg are lower and Fe, As and Co are higher in the hair of patients than in healthy persons. The contents of Ca and Mg are lower and Fe is higher in the hair of patients during attack periods of chronic bronchitis than in relaxed periods. The differences are significant (P〈0.05–0.01). The content of Ca is closely related to that of Mg in hair (P〈0.01). The contents of inorganic elements in the Chinese medicine cough and asthma capsule used to treat chronic bronchitis have been determined. The results show that the contents of elements Ca, Mg, Sr, etc., are higher in this medicine than the average amounts of these elements in 120 other Chinese medicines.
