Description: Uranium series nuclide concentrations have been measured on sediments from five box cores from an equatorial Pacific transect. 230Thexcess activities show discontinuities at the Holocene-glacial boundary as dated by 14C. The glacial sedimentation rates determined by 230Th and 14C are 2.5-3.0 cm/kyr. The Holocene rates from 230Th are much lower than those dated by 14C (1.9-2.3 cm/kyr) because of carbonate dissolution. 230Th sedimentation fluxes exceed water column supply by factors of 1.2-1.8 in the Holocene and 1.8-3.0 in the glacial sections. A number of models have been applied to calculate carbonate dissolution rates. The results show that carbonate dissolution rates in the Holocene (in g/cm**2 kyr) equal 1.5 * 10**-3 exp (1.4D) where D is water depth in kilometers. A point-by- point estimation of sediment fluxes through time show that clay accumulation rates in the area have been near constant at 0.1-0.2 g/cm**2 kyr over the past 20 kyr whereas carbonate accumulation rates have decreased dramatically from 0.6-1.0 g/cm**2 kyr in the glacial sections of the cores to 0.2-0.6 g/cm**2 kyr in the Holocene. The errors caused by the uncertainties in the age of the termination of the last glacial period have been investigated and results show that a range of 11-14 kyr leads to an error upper limit of about 30% in the estimation of CaCO3 dissolution rates. The response time of CaCO3 and 230Thex concentrations in the mixed layer of sediments due to an impulse of change in CaCO3 dissolution rate has also been discussed, showing that the observed changes in carbonate dissolution may be explained in terms of a single or a continuous change, depending upon the thickness of the mixed layer.

Notes: . Giardia lamblia trophozoites express on their surfaces one of a set of cysteine-rich antigenically variant proteins, called variant-specific surface proteins, which comprise the majority of proteins detected by surface labeling. While these VSP proteins may be immunodominant proteins important in the host immune response to G. lamblia, the ability to switch expression from one VSP to another may provide a means for the trophozoites to avoid the host immune response. The first VSP characterized, VSPA6 (from the A6 clone of the WB isolate, originally termed CRP170), contains 18–23 copies of a 65 amino acid repeat. We have now used the repeat as a probe to isolate from a WBA6 genomic library two genes related to vspA6 (called vspA6-S1, vspA6-S2). Sequence analysis of the vspA6-S1 gene revealed nearly two complete copies of the 195 bp repeat and substantial nucleotide and translated amino acid similarity in the coding regions 5’and 3’to the repeats. The vspA6-S2 gene, while still related, showed greater divergence from vspA6 than vspA6-S1 in the nonrepeat coding region and contained nearly four copies of a 201 bp repeat that was 75% identical to the 195 bp vspA6 repeat. These results suggest that gene duplication followed by divergence has played a key role in the generation of the vsp gene repertoire.

Notes: We studied the frequency dependent dielectric constants of amorphous LiNbO3, KNbO3, and PbTiO3 at temperatures below the crystallization. We analyzed the real and imaginary part of dielectric constants ε′(ω) and ε″(ω) using the generalized Langevin equation modified by the space charge effect and the phenomenological frequency scaling. With this model, we can explain the low frequency dispersion and the high frequency relaxation behavior of ε′(ω) and ε″(ω) simultaneously. Our approach is new and different from our previous equivalent circuit model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, field-aided lateral crystallization (FALC), has been explored. Polycrystalline silicon thin film, as an active layer, was prepared by applying an electric field to amorphous silicon film during Ni metal-induced lateral crystallization (MILC). Compared with the conventional metal-induced lateral crystallization thin-film transistors (MILC TFTs), these field-aided lateral crystallization thin-film transistors (FALC TFTs) show a low off-state leakage current of 1.79×10−11 A at Vg=−10 V and a high on/off current ratio of 8.82×105. Moreover, the threshold voltage is lower and field-effect mobility is higher than those of MILC TFTs. Therefore, the possibility of high-performance and low-temperature (〈500 °C) polycrystalline silicon TFTs was demonstrated by using FALC technology. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Organic thin-film transistors using the pentacene as an active electronic material have shown the mobility of 0.8 cm2/V s and the grains larger than 1 μm. To study the characteristics of electronic charge concentrations and the interface traps of the pentacene thin films, the capacitance properties were measured in the metal/insulator/organic semiconductor structure device by employing the capacitance–voltage and deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. Based on the DLTS measurements, the concentrations and the energy levels of hole and electron traps in the obtained pentacene films were formed to be approximately 4.2×1015 cm−3 at Ev+0.24 eV, 9.6×1014 cm−3 at Ev+1.08 eV, 6.5×1015 cm−3 at Ev+0.31 eV and 2.6×1014 cm−3 at Ec−0.69 eV. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
