Description / Table of Contents: Exceptionally preserved fossils from Fossil Lagerstätten contribute greatly to resolving details on the history of life on Earth. For the first time, the “Paläontologische Gesellschaft” (PalGes) and the “Palaeontological Society of China” (PSC) combined forces to jointly present an international conference aimed to highlight and encourage the study of exceptionally well-preserved fossil sites worldwide. The conference focused on all aspects of palaeontology and geobiology, also incorporating related fields like biogeochemistry, biology, sedimentology and stratigraphy. The present volume contains the abstracts of more than 275 lectures and posters presented during the joint international conference “Palaeobiology & Geobiology of Fossil Lagerstätten through Earth History”. This year’s conference was held at the northern campus of the Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, from September 23-27, 2013. More than three hundred palaeontologists, biologists, geologists and other scientists and researchers from sixteen countries, mainly from Germany and the P. R. of China, participated.

Description: Radiolarians were recovered from three of the five holes investigated during Leg 125. Relative abundances are estimated at Holes 782A and 784A, where preservation is poor to good. Rare, poorly preserved radiolarians are present in Hole 786A. Seven radiolarian zones are recognized in the latest early- middle Miocene to early Pleistocene of Holes 782A and 784A. These zones are approximately correlated to the zones of Sanfilippo and others published in 1985.

Notes: Abstract  The Xialu chert radiolarian fauna is latest Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous in age (Pseudodictyomitra carpatica zone) and contains many taxa in common with coeval northern hemisphere middle-latitude (temperate) radiolarian faunas represented by the Torinosu fauna in southwest Japan. Common elements include Eucyrtidiellum pyramis (Aita), Protunuma japonicus Matsuoka & Yao, Sethocapsa pseudouterculus Aita, Sethocapsa (?) subcrassitestata Aita, Archaeodictyomitra minoensis (Mizutani), Stichocapsa praepulchella Hori and Xitus gifuensis (Mizutani). The Xialu fauna is less similar to low-latitude (tropical) assemblages represented by the Mariana fauna. For this reason, the Xialu fauna is regarded as representative of a southern hemisphere middle-latitude (temperate) fauna. A mirror-image bi-temperate provincialism to the equator in radiolarian faunas is reconstructed for the Ceno-Tethys and Pacific Ocean in latest Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous time.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to identify attitude differences between smokers and non-smokers regarding smoking in restaurants and existing smoking by-laws. The findings can assist restaurant managers to resolve the dilemma of in-restaurant smoking. Qualitative research methods were used to capture the holistic and meaningful characteristics of real-life events. Three different data collection techniques were employed for methodological triangulation. Content analysis was applied to the data, collected through participant observations, focus group interviews, and in-depth interviews. To account for the relationship between a theoretical perspective and certain messages, the categories used in the content analysis were determined by both induction and deduction. The findings enhance the understanding smoking and non-smoking customers' thoughts, feelings, and actions in restaurants, and clarifying the resulting challenges for restaurant managers.

Notes: Abstract Accumulation of UO 2 2 + by Scenedesmus obliquus 34 was rapid and energy-independent and the biosorption of UO 2 2 + could be described by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm below the maximum adsorption capacity (75 mg g-1 dry wt). The optimum pH for uranium uptake was between 5.0_8.5.0.1_2.0 M NaCl enhanced uranyl, while Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Mn2+ competed slightly with uranyl. Pretreatment had an unexpected effect on biosorption. After being killed by 0.1 M HCl, S. Obliquus 34 showed 45% of the uptake capacity of the control in which fresh cells were suspended directly in uranyl solution, while the pretreatment of cells by 0.1 M NaOH, 2.0 M NaCl, ethanol or heating decreased uptake slightly. Fresh S. obliquus 34 at 1.2_2.4 mg dry wt mL-1 was able to decrease U from 5.0 to 0.05 mg L-1 after 4_6 equilibrium stages with batch adsorption. Deposited U could be desorbed by pH 4.0 buffer. It is suggested that U was captured by effective groups or by capillary action in the cell wall in the form of [UO2OH]+.
