Notes: Abstract A new series of single‐component air‐stable transition metal acetylide catalysts with the structures ML2(C≡CR)2 (M = Ni and Pd, L = PPh3 and PBu3, R = p‐C6H4C≡CH, C6H5, H, CH2OH, CH2OCOCH3, CH2OCOC6H5 and CH2OCOC6H4OH‐o) for polymerization of polar alkynes were developed. Transition metals, phosphine and alkynyl ligands and solvents exhibited significant influence on the polymerization. Propargyl alcohol could be polymerized with these catalysts under mild conditions to give soluble rich‐trans polymers with weight average molecular weights as high as 5.7 × 104 in yields as high as 79%.

Notes: The study of rare earth coordination catalysts for polymerization of 1-octene has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of polymerization of 1-octene by Nd(naph)3-AIEt3 catalyst system in tetrachloro-methane are described. The overall polymerization activation energy Ea measured was 74.5 kJ/mol and the rate equation could be expressed as Rp = kp [Nd] [M] (kp = 3.21 × 10-3 L/mol s, at 50°C). The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln (naph)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the polymerization was compared. A 1-octene oligomer with double bonds was obtained. It is either a white or pale yellow waxy semi-solid. Its number-average molecular weight is about 103 and the molecular weight distribution is less than 2.

Notes: The simultaneous polymerization and formation of polyphenylacetylene film by Nd(P204)3-Fe(AA)3-Al(i-Bu)3 catalyst system have been investigated. The combined catalytic effects between rare earth phosphonates with MT(naph)x or Fe(AA)3 systems are first proposed and compared. The polymerization features and kinetic behaviors with Nd(P204)3-Fe(AA)3-Al(i-Bu)3 system are described and discussed. The combined catalytic effects have the following order, respectively: Fe ≫ Co 〉 Cr 〉 Mn-Ni, Nd(P204)3-Nd(P507)3 〉 Nd(P350)3 and Tb 〉 Sm 〉 Yb 〉 Ho 〉 Lu 〉 Dy 〉 Nd-Er-Pr 〉 Y-Tm 〉 Ce 〉 Gd 〉 La. The overall polymerization activation energy was found to be 20.8 kJ/mol showing coordination-anionic polymerization characteristic. PPA films so obtained are very similar to the rare earth ones. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The study on homogeneous rare earth coordination catalysts, LnL3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4, for the copolymerization of styrene with acrylonitrile has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of copolymerization of styrene with acrylonitrile by Nd(P204)3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4 system are described. The catalyst sites appear to possess both coordinate anionic and free radical characteristics. The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln(P204)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the copolymerization have the following order, respectively: Yb 〉 Er 〉 Tb ∼ Tm 〉 Ho 〉 Ce 〉 Lu ∼ Sm ∼ La 〉 Pr 〉 Nd, and Nd(naph)3 〉 Nd(P204)3 ∼ Nd(P507)3 〉 Nd(acac)3·3H2O. An alternating-rich copolymer of styrene-acrylonitrile with a high softening point (195-230°C) was obtained by the LnL3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4 systems in toluene at 80°C.

Notes: Homogeneous polymerization of propargyl alcohol (OHP) with Pd (C=CCH2OH)2(PPh3)2 [Pd=C] catalyst in CHCl3-CH3OH mixed solvent system has been investigated. [Pd=C] was found to be a novel effective catalyst for the OHP polymerization. Some features, kinetic behavior, and effect of solvent for the OHP polymerization are described and discussed. The overall polymerization activation energy was found to be 75.6kJ/mol and the rate equation can be expressed as Rp = kp[OHP] [Pd=C]0.7, where kp = 3.14 × 10-4 L0.7/ mol0.7 S (60°C). Polypropargyl alcohol (POHP) obtained is a brown powder with a number-average molecular weight (M̄n) of 103-2 × 103, and soluble in MeOH, DMF, and DMSO. Conducting properties of the resulting POHP were investigated. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The synthesis of the nickel dialkynyl complex Ni(C≡C—C6H4—C≡CH)2(PPh3)2 and of the corresponding polyyne polymer containing nickel in the main chain —[Ni(PPh3)2—C≡C—C6H4—C≡C—]n are described and discussed. A new mixed solvent system DMSO/HNEt2 and homogeneous step-wise condensation method used for their synthesis are presented for the first time. The Ni-polyyne polymer obtained is dark yellow powder and soluble in THF or CH2Cl2. Its M̄w is about 104, and the MWD is less than 2. Both the prepared complex and polymer have been characterized by IR, UV, 1H-NMR, and DTA. Preliminary results on photoluminesence of nickel polyyne polymers are present. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: cis- and trans-PolyacetyleneSystematic name: (Z)- and (E)-poly(viny1ene). films prepared by a rare-earth coordination catalyst were doped with ferric chloride in nitromethane solution. The doped polyacetylene films [CH(FeCl4)y]x exhibit high electrical conductivities which change very little when stored in dry air. Infra-red absorption bands at 900 cm-1, 1300 cm-1 and 1400 cm-1 are typical for cis-and trans-polyacetylenes slightly doped with FeCl3. In the samples with dopant mole fractions y 〈 0,02, two superimposed ESR signals with different g values are observed: one very narrow, the other one extraordinarily broad. 57Fe-Mössbauer effect measurements reveal that Fe(II) and Fe(III) species coexist in freshly doped cis-polyacetylene, appearing in the form of FeCl2 · nH2O and FeCl-4, respectively. Fe(II) species do not interact with the polyacetylene chain; they exist at a site separated from Fe(III) species.

Notes: The photosensitivity in cis-polyphenylacetylene (cis-PPA, polymerized with rare-earth catalysts) can be significantly enhanced by doping the PPA with I2 or FeCl3 and sensitizing with 4-isothiocyanatofluorescein (F-II) or 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF), which are powerful sensitizers. The electrophotographic photoreceptor (P/R) device with cis-PPA + F-II (on Al substrate) appeared preferable in photosensitivity enhancement and showed good photosensitivity: dark decay 1,8 V/s; maximum rate of discharge 321 V/s; residual surface potential 22 V; discharge 89, 1%; photosensitivity 2,96 s-1. This is a new “family” of photosensitive materials which can be used in a duplicator.

Notes: A neodymium complex supported on an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVA · Nd) was prepared for the first time and the polymerization of styrene in the presence of a new type of catalyst system composed of this complex was studied. The new catalytic system [EVA · Nd—Al(i-Bu)3—CCl4] (i-Bu = isobutyl) is characterized by its catalytic activity in comparison with that of conventional rare-earth catalysts. When [Nd] = 10-3 mol/L, [Styrene] = 5 mol/L, [Al]/[Nd] = 120 and [CCl4]/[Nd] = 35, then the conversion to polystyrene (PS) was 55% in 6 h, and the catalytic activity reached 1972 g PS/g Nd which is higher by a factor of 45 than that of conventional rare-earth catalysts. The polymerization reaction shows a short induction period where the rate is first order with respect to the monomer concentration. The activation energy is 27,6 kJ/mol. This polymerization may proceed according to a free-radical or a Ziegler-type coordination mechanism.
