Description: Bester, a hybrid sturgeon (Huso huso L. females ´ Acipenser ruthenus L. males), neither spermiate nor ovulate in the captivity. Thirteen-year-old adult male and female bester were injected with LH-RHa (0.1-0.3 mg/kg B.W.) intramuscularly and spawning status of the treated fish was checked 24-48 hours later. Additionally, changes in serum levels of DHP in both the responded and the non-responded individuals were monitored 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. Between 70-100 percent of the LR-RHa injected males individuals, and 11-40 percent of the females spawned 24-48 hours after the treatment; the rest did not respond to the injection. In the responded males, 3-9 hours after the treatment, serum levels of DHP increased; while in the females it occurred first after 12-24 hours. In contrast, during the same period, serum levels of DHP remained low in all non-responded individuals. The present study indicated that using 0.1-1.3 mg/kg B. W. of LH-RHa can induce oocyte maturation and ovulation in the females and spermiation in the males cultured bester. The results suggested additionally DHP as an appropriated steroid that could be used in the final maturation stage of the gonads.

Notes: We have attempted to prepare Fe-Al-Si-N films by rf magnetron sputtering in an atmosphere of Ar+N2, employing an Fe-Al-Si target, and investigated the influence of nitrogen on the properties of sendust alloys. Some properties, such as Vicker's hardness and electrical resistivity of the films, were improved in the presence of nitrogen. In addition, the Fe-Al-Si-N films interestingly show superior magnetic properties to those of sendust films. For example, effective permeability at 1 MHz of the film, prepared under the selected conditions, reached a maximum of approximately 4000, exceeding 2200 of our standard sendust film. The microstructure of Fe-Al-Si-N and Fe-Al-Si films has been observed using scanning electron microscopy. As a result, we have found a difference in microstructure between the nitrogen-containing films and the regular films.

Notes: A Thomson scattering system with an obliquely backscattered configuration with a novel, high throughput collection system was developed and tested on a plasma confinement device, the compact helical system. It can yield the full profiles of electron temperature and density along a major radius with the spatial resolution ranging from 1.5 to 4 cm at a repetition rate of up to 250 Hz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties of Fe-Si-B-M (M: additives) alloys prepared by annealing amorphous alloys made by the single roller method over their crystallization temperature have been investigated for development of new Fe-based soft magnetic alloys. Excellent soft magnetic properties were obtained by adding the two elements Cu and Nb to Fe-Si-B alloys. It was found that these new alloys, called "FINEMET,'' have an ultrafine grain structure composed of bcc Fe solid solution. They are suitable for many kinds of magnetic components such as saturable reactors, choke coils, and transformers, because they have superior soft magnetic properties and a high saturation flux density, and because different types of B-H hysteresis loops are obtained by magnetic field annealing.

Notes: We have developed a YAG Thomson scattering (TS) system for the measurements of electron temperature and density profiles on the large helical device (LHD). The LHD-TS has four YAG lasers, and flexible operational modes are possible by using them. For example, (1) high-energy mode: The pulse energy can be increased up to four times by firing the four lasers simultaneously. In this mode, the data quality can be improved for low-density plasmas. (2) High repetition mode: When firing the lasers at intervals of 5 ms, the lasers work as a 200 Hz laser. The laser beams are guided to the LHD by seven steering mirrors. The first mirror is real-time feedback controlled for precise beam transport. The beam pointing stability is improved successfully from 200 μrad to below 4 μrad with the feedback-control system. We describe the details of the laser system for the LHD-TS. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This article describes the design and performance of a multi-point (200) high repetition rate (4×50 Hz) Thomson scattering diagnostic installed on the Large Helical Device. A unique feature of this system is its oblique back scattering configuration, which enables us to observe the entire plasma region along a major radius on the midplane under a severely restricted port constraint. High throughput collection optics using a mosaic mirror of 1.5 m×1.8 m area yield high quality data even with 0.5 J pulse energy delivered from 50 Hz repetition rate Nd: yttrium–aluminum–garnet lasers. High repetition and high spatial resolution (2–4 cm) of the system enable us to study island evolution in the plasma. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A combined machining method of diamond turning and numerically controlled elastic emission machining has been developed for finishing metal mirror surfaces made from Cu and Al alloys. A mirror surface can be polished without any stress by this method. Shape and roughness of the mirror surface examined in different machining methods are compared and discussed. A precisely shaped mirror with a roughness less than 2-nm Rmax was obtained. A copper mirror was installed in a VUV beamline of the Photon Factory. It is confirmed that the metal mirror finished by the present method has good optical characteristics for synchrotron radiation beamlines.

Notes: Common mode choke cores using the new Fe-based alloys called "FINEMET'' composed of ultrafine grain structure were developed. These new cores show high attenuation to high-voltage pulse noises and good attenuation characteristics over a wide frequency range. Accordingly, the new cores are expected to be applied in many applications as line filters for electronic devices.

Notes: Abstract Ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) rocks of the Kokchetav Massif of Kazakhstan contain metamorphic microdiamond and coesite inclusions inside rigid capsules such as garnet and zircon. Precambrian protoliths of the UHPM rocks were metamorphosed at around 530 Ma, at pressures of about 7 GPa, which suggests that crustal protoliths were subducted to depths of over 200 km. Primary UHPM minerals are poorly preserved due to partial obliteration by subsequent Barrovian overprint during exhumation and later collision events in Caledonian times. We report the results of detailed mapping of the Kokchetav Massif and use structural data to propose intrusion and exhumation mechanisms for the UHPM rocks. Detailed mapping revealed that many subvertical structures in the ultrahigh-pressure–high-pressure (UHP–HP) units were formed due to later folding. The primary structure appears to be subhorizontal and the total thickness of the UHP rocks is estimated at around 2 km. The first order structure is sandwich-like; that is, the UHP–HP units are separated from underlying low-P metamorphic rocks of the Daulet Series and from feebly metamorphosed to unmetamorphosed sedimentary strata on the top by subhorizontal faults. Kinematic indicators show top-to-the-south sense of shear along the top, and top-to-the-north displacement along the bottom boundaries. These shear senses, together with the observed metamorphic gradients, suggest that the thin UHPM sheet was extruded toward the north. We consider wedge extrusion to have been the most effective mechanism for the exhumation of the UHPM rocks.
