    Description: We demonstrate semipolar InGaN single-quantum-well light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the green, yellow-green, yellow and amber spectral region. The LEDs are grown on our overgrown semipolar (11-22) GaN on micro-rod array templates, which are fabricated on (11-22) GaN grown on m -plane sapphire. Electroluminescence measurements on the (11-22) green LED show a reduced blue-shift in the emission wavelength with increasing driving current, compared to a reference commercial c -plane LED. The blue-shifts for the yellow-green and yellow LEDs are also significantly reduced. All these suggest an effective suppression in quantum confined Stark effect in our (11-22) LEDs. On-wafer measurements yield a linear increase in the light output with the current, and external quantum efficiency demonstrates a significant improvement in the efficiency-droop compared to a commercial c -plane LED. Electro-luminescence polarization measurements show a polarization ratio of about 25% in our semipolar LEDs.

    Description: This study has established a set of methodological systems by simulating loads and analyzing optimization strategy integrity for the optimization of watershed non-point source pollution control. First, the source of watershed agricultural non-point source pollution is divided into four aspects, including agricultural land, natural land, livestock breeding, and rural residential land. Secondly, different pollution control measures at the source, midway and ending stages are chosen. Thirdly, the optimization effect of pollution load control in three stages are simulated, based on the Monte Carlo simulation. The method described above is applied to the Ashi River watershed in Heilongjiang Province of China. Case study results indicate that the combined three types of control measures can be implemented only if the government promotes the optimized plan and gradually improves implementation efficiency.     Description: Endogenous and exogenous factors can induce DNA damage, leading to increased risk of cancer. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is considered as the most versatile DNA repair pathway to deal with a variety of different DNA lesions. ERCC1 and ERCC2 are the two important proteins in NER pathway. In this study, we investigated the association of three functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) ( ERCC1 rs11615, ERCC2 rs13181 and ERCC2 rs1799793) with the clinical outcome of 940 gastric cancer patients in a Chinese population. Multiplex SNaPshot technology was used to genotype these three SNPs. Our results revealed that individuals with ERCC2 rs13181TG/GG genotypes had a decreased risk of death compared with those with TT genotype [log-rank P = 0.008; adjusted hazard ratio = 0.68, 95% confidence interval = 0.51–0.91] and this protective effect was more pronounced among the subgroups of patients with tumour size ≤ 5cm (0.59, 0.39–0.89), non-cardia gastric tumour (0.69, 0.48–0.98), no lymph node metastasis (0.55, 0.32–0.96), no distant metastasis (0.70, 0.52–0.95) and chemotherapy (0.39, 0.21–0.72). We conclude that ERCC2 rs13181 polymorphism could play different roles in the overall survival of gastric cancer. Further larger studies should be conducted to validate our findings.

    Description: An experimental investigation of the steam flowing across a horizontal tube bundle with liquid falling film was conducted to simulate flow characteristics in a large desalination plant. Experiments were conducted at pressure ranging from 12 kPa to 31 kPa with the corresponding saturated steam temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C and the falling film spray density of 0.02 kg·m -1 ·s -1 to 0.08 kg·m -1 ·s -1 . The influence of the spray density, saturated temperature and tube bundle geometry structure on steam pressure drop was illustrated. The results indicate that the pressure drop increased with increasing spray density, but decreased with increasing saturated temperature. The pressure drop at the maximum spray density of 0.08 kg·m -1 ·s -1 can be three times that in spray density of 0.02 kg·m -1 ·s -1 and the pressure drop at 50 °C is almost twice that at 70 °C.     Description: High harmonic fast waves (HHFW) are among the candidates for non-inductive current drive (CD), which is essential for long-pulse or steady-state operation of tokamaks. Current driven with HHFW in EAST tokamak plasmas is numerically studied. The HHFW CD efficiency is found to increase non-monotonically with the wave frequency, and this phenomenon is attributed to the multi-pass absorption of HHFW. The sensitivity of CD efficiency to the value of the parallel refraction index of the launched wave is confirmed. The quasilinear effects, assessed as significant in HHFW current drive with the GENRAY/CQL3D package, cause a significant increase in CD efficiency as RF power is increased, which is very different from helicon current drive. Simulations for a range of toroidal dc electric fields, in combination with a range of fast wave powers, are also presented and indicate that the presence of the DC field can also enhance the CD efficiency.

    Description: Functional trait studies are proliferating in plankton ecology, especially studies analysing body size. Yet, empirical studies comparing species versus individual-size structuring are scarce. Here, we conducted a comparison of copepod species-based and individual-size-based community structuring in the East China Sea, and found that: (i) Species, species-based nominal-size and individual-size distributions exhibit very different patterns, and that juveniles (neglected in species counts due to limitation of recognition) tend to dominate in a certain size range. (ii) Species-based structuring is more strongly shaped by physical conditions, while individual-size-based structuring is more strongly shaped by food availability. (iii) Despite these differences, the congruence (i.e. degree of match) between species-based and individual-size-based structuring remains statistically significant. Finally, we tested intrinsic factors potentially explaining the degree of mismatch (i.e. species richness and proxies for: size partitioning of species without accounting for intraspecific variability, intraspecific variability without accounting for ontogeny and ontogeny). (iv) The frequency of juveniles (proxy for ontogeny) is the only intrinsic factor significantly explaining the mismatch between species and size structuring, highlighting the problem of the classic species-based analysis that unavoidably neglects juveniles in the species counts. These results support individual-size as a useful complementary descriptor to species-based studies.

    Description: The complex refractive index of graphene fabricated using chemical vapor deposition is characterized at 1550 nm wavelength through the reflectivity measurement on a SiO 2 /Si substrate.     Description: Although conventional reservoirs dominate the Bohai Basin, China, a new type of sandstone reservoir also exists in the Dongpu depression that has a low matrix porosity (tight) in which natural fractures govern both permeability and porosity. These fractured sandstones are located on a structurally modified buried hill underlying Paleogene mudstones, and are truncated along an angular unconformity. The fractured sandstone oils of the Triassic Liujiagou, Heshanggou, and Ermaying Formations are derived from the Paleogene Shahejie Formation, which reached peak oil generation and expulsion during the Oligocene to early Miocene (32.8–15.6 Ma). Gas was generated primarily during the Paleogene from Carboniferous and Permian coals. Petrographic evidence suggests that oil and gas emplacement followed the compaction and cementation of the Triassic sandstone reservoirs. Fluid inclusion evidence and burial history analysis suggest that fractures developed before oil emplacement but may have coincided with peak gas generation, which suggests that oil and gas mainly migrated and accumulated in fractures.
