Abstract The process of hydration of phosphocholine was investigated using FT-IR. From the intensity changes and frequency shifts of some IR bands seen for the polar groups both PO 2 − and C=O have strong effects of hydration. The whole polar head of phosphocholine molecule including the hydrophobic groups CH2 and CH3 is surrounded by hydration water.
