    Description: The complex permittivity and permeability of superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles has been quantified using a circular waveguide assembly with a static magnetic field to align the nanoparticle's magnetization. The high sensitivity of the measurement provides the precise resonant feature of nanoparticles. The complex permeability in the vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance is in agreement with the nanoparticle's measured magnetization via conventional magnetometry. A rigorous and self-consistent measure of complex permittivities and permeabilities of nanoparticles is crucial to ascertain accurately the dielectric behaviour as well as the frequency response of nanoparticle magnetization, necessary ingredients when designing and optimizing magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

    Description: A designed one metasurface metamaterial that can provide both negative permittivity and negative permeability and therefore a negative refractive index is experimentally realized in this work. Effective parameters are retrieved from the measured S parameters and are in good agreement with the numerical simulation data. Over our working frequency range, negative refractive index, index near zero, and positive index are all observed, which is confirmed by the two-dimensional wave propagation behaviour. This result can help simplify the design for negative refraction application and can further be used to fabricate negative index materials at optical wavelengths as well as three-dimensional metamaterials.

    Description: Complement receptor 2 (CR2/CD21) is an important receptor that amplifies B lymphocyte activation by bridging the innate and adaptive immune systems. CR2 ligands include complement C3d and Epstein-Barr virus glycoprotein 350/220. We describe the x-ray structure of this CR2 domain in complex with C3d at 2.0 angstroms. The structure reveals extensive main chain interactions between C3d and only one short consensus repeat (SCR) of CR2 and substantial SCR side-side packing.     Description: The APOBEC family members are involved in diverse biological functions. APOBEC3G restricts the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus and retroelements by cytidine deamination on single-stranded DNA or by RNA binding. Here we report the high-resolution crystal structure of the carboxy-terminal deaminase domain of APOBEC3G (APOBEC3G-CD2) purified from Escherichia coli. The APOBEC3G-CD2 structure has a five-stranded beta-sheet core that is common to all known deaminase structures and closely resembles the structure of another APOBEC protein, APOBEC2 (ref. 5). A comparison of APOBEC3G-CD2 with other deaminase structures shows a structural conservation of the active-site loops that are directly involved in substrate binding. In the X-ray structure, these APOBEC3G active-site loops form a continuous 'substrate groove' around the active centre. The orientation of this putative substrate groove differs markedly (by 90 degrees) from the groove predicted by the NMR structure. We have introduced mutations around the groove, and have identified residues involved in substrate specificity, single-stranded DNA binding and deaminase activity.     Notes: For a binary mixture we relate the second order expansion of the grand canonical potential Ω to direct correlation functions and to thermodynamic expressions. The matrix of second functional derivatives of Ω with respect to the particle density fluctuations is diagonalized. The zero of the smallest eigenvalue indicates a phase instability vs particle density fluctuations. The related eigenvector characterizes the instability uniquely. Calculations of correlation functions via the reference hypernetted chain integral equations are performed for a binary mixture of hard core particles with attractive Yukawa interactions; the spinodals are established for different concentrations and different interaction potentials using the calculated correlation functions. Along the spinodal we find a continuous change from predominantly demixing to mainly condensation instabilities.

    Notes: Expressions for the Helmholtz free energy and the chemical potential are derived for fluid mixtures with nonspherical interactions. For the important reference hypernetted chain (RHNC) approximation we can derive explicit formulas. We evaluate the free energy formula for a hard sphere dipole system. The results for the Helmholtz free energy agree well with Monte Carlo simulation.
